I think Shepard deserves to be promoted. I mean, he HAS saved the galaxy twice already and it could be 3 times by the end of ME3.

I don't think Shepard will be ever anything than a commander, at least in the games, because "Commander Shepard" has become kind of a fixed expression.
I think that is why they had her blow up the batarians, because so they didn't have to promote her.

No. I don't support this. If Shepard gets a promotion, s/he either should become Captain or Major or maybe the lowest Admiral rank, but not more. He simply can't become a General since he's not a marine but member of the Navy. They don't have Generals, amirite?

Did he? Missed that line / got lost in translation.

Lets say you're right and I simply missed something - "General" doesn't fit to Shepard: s/he is a wo/man of action and no desk warrior. Generals are usually not found right in the middle of a battle. Think Shepard should remain at the front until s/he is too old for doing so. Therefore - Major seems to fit as rank imo.

It is actually General/Rear Admiral (as in, they have the same worth but are mutually exclusive)...
As for Kaidan, no he is not an Admiral, he is a Major, but Major is equivalent to Captain in the Alliance Command Structure, which means he has as much political/military pull as Anderson had in ME1, however he is not in the Navy (Captian), but rather in the Marines (Major), just like Shepard...
So in battle he mainly leads the men in the field, rather than ships in space...

Ranking goes like this for "marine":

In the compact version that is in the codex single choices are named the same in both, alternatives have the same "power" but different names depending on what branch of the military you are in...

EDIT: My mistake, I got some rank equivalences wrong... Kaidan is not equivalent to Admiral at all, he is equivalent to Captain... Corrected the command line too and various points in my post... XD

I was wondering how much longer it would take that stupid gibberish-speak to start annoying other people as much as it's been annoying me.

Anyway. I wouldn't really object to his/her promotion, but I can't say I'd particularly expect it. 'Commander' is practically his/her first name by now. Even when no longer part of the alliance and effectively serving as the captain of a ship, everybody still calls him/her 'commander'. It's a bit weird.

Besides that, Shep should become a Captain or Major, but no General right after battle. The galaxy needs him active, in the field, not behind a desk.

Major is the equivalent of Captain for ground forces (marines). It's just cosmetic though, all ground forces are branches of the fleet.
General is the highest marine rank the equivalent of rear admiral. Further advancement require fleet command.
