If I were allowed one little wish, it would be that when and if Shep leads back a giant Galaxy-wide force, he be recognized with title and authority to do so.

I too agree that Shepard should be promoted. I think commodore would be fine, since in the released demo (not the leak!!) you see shepard commanding/leading a small quarian fleet. There might just also be alliance ships at some point.

I think the 'commander shepard has a nice ring to it' or the 'it is the games trademark' or the 'it just sounds better' is about as sad/lame as excuses go to not promote shepard.

I picked the commodore (or fleet captain) because then admirals (Hacket or Anderson) can still order shepard around, yet he also can command a fleet commanded by captains.

Spectres may be above the law, they do not actually have command authority, otherwise every spectre would use a fleet just because he can.

Bioware has made the name commander shepard iconic. To them Shepard without "commander" would be wrong. However, if they make it Fleet commander, supreme commander or anything like that they may satisfy both desires. At the very least as a spectre his position trumps any rank. If you let Alenko live Shep should be a staff commander to prevents trouble.

Commodore is not a rank in the system alliance military. Admirals outranks generals in either case.

Acording to the beta footage Kaidan will be a Major in ME3

The only problem I have with Commodore Shepard is that I'd need to make an Afro Shep and play the Commodores while I play.  Also, epic chin Shep wouldn't be that bad. 

Hmm.  Brick House playing as Fem Shep runs through ME2 sounds appropriate.  'Cause she's a mighty, mighty, and built like Bro Shep apparently. 

Also, running into TIMs base, I'd have to break convention and play "Hello?  Is it me you're looking for?"

If Shepard is going to lead a united cross species galaxy force against the reapers it is probably quite important that he/she is not part of the alliance in a millitary sense. In practice Shepard will be outranking everyone in the alliance.

Well Shepard just gave most of the batarian population time to live more. Remember the batarians were the first to be invaded by the Reapers. By Mass Effect 3 their situation is far worse than the rest of the galaxy and have extreme losses of both their military and civilian populations to the Reapers.

It kind of bugs me but they've shoved marine and navy ranks together to form one big rank system for the alliance military, after Lt. Commander it's: Staff Commander, Captain/Major, Rear Admiral/General, Admiral and Fleet Admiral.

IRL a Navy Captain is the same as a Colonel... (and the commanding officer of any navy ship is the captain (or skipper) no matter his rank) the whole thing makes my brain hurt.
