[Disastersaurus]

 This miiight belong in another forum, but because it's very heavily based on 3 and decisions going into it, I'm putting it here and accepting it might get moved.


So here's my problem, and one I hope you guys can help with. I got ME1 and ME2 during the Steam Autumn Sale for the PC, so that I can get 3 on PC and have my save files. I've beaten each Mass Effect game multiple times on the 360 [ten times ME1, six times ME2] and so I know the details and what not, but I'm still torn regarding my choice of romantic interest, in part due to some questions that won't be answered until 3. The thing is, it's stuff you guys might be able to answer, and even just input from fans is really helpful, so here goes.

First off, I've already narrowed it down to between Tali and Ashley.  Miranda, Liara, and Jack fans, I totally get you, they're cool characters, but they're not my Shepard's type romantically. So we're just setting them aside.

Secondly, SPOILERS ABOUND for ME1 and ME2, so there's your warning there. Here's my problem.


Ashley Williams

General Opinion: Strong, decisive, independent woman. Owns up quickly to mistakes. Selfless and reliable, but occasionally temperamental and very stubborn.

Pros: I think she's got a very attractive 'Michelle Rodriguez' tough gal look, so the physical appreciation's there. She's competent, trustworthy, and tough, and I never feel like she 'needs' Shepard.

Cons: I just have a lot of trouble swallowing Horizon. She lashed out at Shepard, wouldn't listen to reason, and everything they had seemed to mean very little  to her. The apology later alleviated that somewhat, but it placed some doubts in my Shepard's mind about her stability. -Is- she rather brittle after all?

Concerns: My concerns going forward are based on the Horizon incident. Do you guys think Mass Effect 3 will allow for an interesting and, more importantly BELIEVABLE plot where Shepard and Ashley work past the Horizon incident together, and do you guys feel Ashley can be trusted to learn from the incident and actually trust Shepard?

Tali'Zorah Vas Normandy

General Opinion: Socially awkward but intelligent, playful woman. Exotic nature as Quarian both creates interesting dilemmas and situations. Occasionally stubborn and slightly obsessive.

Pros: Tali is just...she's that girl. The one who gets swept up into things and never complains no matter how bad it gets. Extremely loyal to both team and people. Adorably awkward without being obnoxiously shy. Very affectionate and sincere in her feelings for Shepard, interest seems more deep than any other option's. Dem hips.

Cons: Annoyingly close-minded about the Geth, though understandably so and shows some improvement towards Legion, proving Shepard's persuasive enough. Attempts to be independent, but lacks a commanding or strong presence. Not sure of character depth outside romantic interest in Shepard. Questionable role in Mass Effect 3. 

Concerns: With due respect, my main worry about Tali is that she's a fanservice romance. By which I mean I'm afraid that in ME3, her character quality will suffer as it did a little in 2 where she contradicts herself from the last game. To explain, I mean her interest in Shepard in 2 felt a bit sudden and forced, due to her intentions to return to her fleet, complete lack of awkwardness [which is pretty classic Tali when she's attracted to someone], and official demeanor. IF YOU DISAGREE WITH THIS ASSESSMENT I don't blame you, but I'm not looking to argue it. It's not how I'm saying she objectively acted, just how I -perceived- it.



So anyway, that's where I am. Arguments, inputs, solutions, I welcome it all because I'm tearing my hair out over this.

I appreciate the feedback, but I'm not really looking for "___ is better." Moreso looking for supporting arguments for the reasoning and opinions on the legitimacy of my concerns.

Well, you have several runthroughs done, right? Do one with Ashley, one with Tali, One with Liara - etc. you get the point.

Mix it up some - see what the game has in store for you.

Yeah but honestly, as much as I love ME1 and 2, I don't really want to play it another three times. That's why I'm trying to make the decision.

The thing is Ash is always going to think about her mission and the Alliance first. And Tali is always going to think about her people over Shepard. I've read the ME3 spoilers and both do love Shepard (If you romance them of course.) But if you romance Ash in ME1 you learn that she took Shepard's death VERY hard, which you'll also be reminded of in ME3 again, just how hard it was for her.

Depends what your Shepard is after in the long run I suppose. He could settle and have kids with Ash or live in the homeworld with Tali. (Shiz I don't know.)

I don't know about you, but I'm going to stick with my first choice and that's Ash, no matter what. My Shepard cares for Tali but not in that way and even if he did, he wouldn't risk her life. But that's just me. I eventually want my Shep to have a normal life with Ash once things calm down. You know, raise some ass-whooping kids.

Or just make a new game in ME2 if you don't want to spend 30+ hours on ME1 for a faithful file

I know I can circumvent it but honestly, I prefer to only have 'one' shepard. Even playing through ten times, I always deleted every other character first, and I never once did Renegade. I'm trying to establish my headcanon Shepard, and only one.

Why do you want people to help you decide which one to go for? That's what multiple play throughs are for. I know you're not gonna play the game just once, are you?

@MegaBadExample, I know. I'm not really asking for you to pick for me, so much as asking if anyone knows or thinks my concerns are legitimate.


Simply put, if my concerns for Tali seem legit, but the ones for Ashley don't, then I'd rather pick Ashley, and vice versa.

The problem with what your asking especially in relation to Ash is the leaked script changes everything, once you've read it whatever opinion you had on where your concerns may go are rendered moot because you'd know the direction they'll go in so you wouldn't be speculating if you get me.

As for Tali the likelihood is that her character arc will continue in the same vein in did in me2, so if you felt the romance rushed or just fanservice, it would only be continued along the lines set up in me2.

To put it another way Tali will only be further along from how she was in me2, how she was in me1 is a distant memory, how she was in me2 is almost her starting point for future character and romance development.

So basically, Ash can't be answered without revealing spoilers and Tali is almost answered by your concerns, which one you decide to go with is impossible for anyone to direct you to either because they're biased one way or another or because they've been spoiled by leak info.

My advice would therefore be simple, if your concerns with Tali is because you feel it was a rushed fanservice romance and won't be implemented better in me3 then i think they're groundless and you shouldn't worry and go with it, if you concerns are that her character is different from me1 and will continue to be different then they're not and you shouldn't.

As for Ash, i've read the leaks and i'm still going with Ash as my canon, but that's just me and shouldn't be taken to mean your fears are right or wrong in how they'll handle things.

I do the same. Though, I've only played thru completely three times, which isn't much in comparison to some other players

The problem is, doing that would leave me cheating. If I pick Ashley in my ME1 and ME2 playthroughs, then change to Tali in 3, that'd be a dickish move my shepard wouldn't do.


Same with if I picked Tali in 2 and Ashley in 3.


I'm okay doing multiple playthroughs of 3 to experiment, the problem is I'm only doing one more playthrough of 1 and 2 and have to decide.

There is a pretty big spoiler for Ash and Kaiden that makes the whole romance thing a little weird.

You really shouldn't read it imo, if true it spoils way too much and if not true or complete it'll take you in a direction that will annoy you, plus we're not really supposed to talk about it, if you really are that concerned, drop by the character discussions and see how different people seem to be responding, that'll give you an idea of things without spoiling too much, or just pm me.

I don't particularly like Tali. And I didn't mind Ash, but using what I've read on the interwebs, I wouldn't romance her. So with that said, if you like Tali, you should go with her.

You might be right. This is just such a mindnumbingly tough decision.

I wonder if it'll be easier when I actually play.
