Notwithstanding the paucity of support for Noveria (sob), my faith is much restored, after spending too much time on threads thrashing the issue of Cerberus' moral standing, how BW cannot help but screw up the finale, and the mass violations of fan rights to favorites and hate objects. Nice to see thread not degenerate and remember people still love the game (Wait! This BSN - there's always time to lob a bomb at some poor unsuspecting...)

I still am in love with Gianna.

Is it generally agreed that Noveria is by far the best mission in the entire series -  unsurpassed dramatically. brilliant writing (mostly), and unforgettable characterization?  It is also is well up there (ME1 vintage implementation) in terms of gameplay and combat.

Bioware has so far not come close - and I seriously wonder if they can or will in ME3.

Notwithstanding, I am of course open to other views, ill-concieved and erroneous though they may be.

I don't think Noveria is considered the "best" mission. It is however one of the most varied missions in the series thus far. There are so many ways you can approach and handle Noveria's dilemmas that I honestly have yet to try them all or see all the outcomes.

That said however Noveria has rather odd level design. I honestly still find it a little confusing to navigate as a result. Namely there's too many damn elevators and it gets boring riding through them to all your destinations. But that could just be me.

For me the "best" mission in the series is Feros. You've got Geth poking around and actually attacking the Colonists which leads to slighty more interesting corridor fighting. There's also a bit of mystery with the Colonists at first because you can tell they are hiding something. (Turns out to be a big grumpy alien plant.) I also enjoyed the vistage of fighting the Geth on an ancient Skyscraper Highway. You've also got a few rather deadly Krogan fights and there's a couple little side-missions you can embark on as well.

You also discover the Geth have some sort of religious aspect to them. And you get to crash a Geth ship which was amusingly fun. Then you have to try to save the Colonists. It's nice to see a game where civilians can actually end up as casualities and where the best solution isn't to use excessive force to save people

And to top it all off you have to fight a bunch of plant zombies in very cramped conditions along with a Biotic Asari clone. Probably one of the harder parts of the game if you're not prepared for it.

Virmire, Suicide Mission, The Citadel (+ fight with Saren), LotSB, Haestrom (only challenging mission in the whole series IMO)

My favorite still is I Remember Me.  Yeah only colonist background get it but this quest is one of the few times I had tears in my eyes from any game or quest.  Virmire would come in 2nd followed by Garrus recruitment mission.

depends, i think - on a first playthrough at a high level of difficulty - eg. hardcore - horizon can break your pick - leveled up, different story.

I found Horizon much harder than Haestrom; and the two missions are very easy to compare because one immediately follows the other. I play on insanity, btw.

I found the Collector Ship waaaaaaaay harder than Horizon or Haestrom due to being a Vanguard and all the platforms on Insanity.

...get my butt kicked regularly @ Horizon, & can just about survive on ME1 insanity - Haestrom seems a bit better - husks give me hives w/out tech armor or a good shockwave

I think the best mission was by far Mordin's. It was great to see his mindset slowly change throughout the mission. It also had the best Renegade interrupt ever!!!

I didn't play ME1 to know how cool Noveria and the other missions were, but ME2 had some motherf*cking cool missions. SM, Samara's loyalty mission, Garrus' recruitment, Horizon, Lair of the Shadow Broker... They were AWESOME, and that's just mentioning a few. Project Overlord was great storywise, but BORING in the gameplay. Also, I'm pretty sure ME3 will have kickass missions too.

Virmire.

The talk with Sovereign still sends shivers down my spine.

For me it'd be Noveria, then Virmire/Ilos, and finally Suicide Mission. LotSB is excellent too, but as someone said, it can be considered as 2 or 3 separate chapters.

Haestrom is my favorite mission in gameplay terms. It's a well constructed mission with challenging weather and big waves of enemies.

But overall my favorite mission is Lair to the Shadow Broker, perfect combination of good story arc and diverse gameplay.

Both games final missions beat Noveria.

Shadow Broker beats them all.

Great topic OP ! id have to say one of my fav missions from ME1 was the mission to get liara on therum, i just liked the multi-layered levels where you get to use a vehicle to get there then all hell breaks loose on foot
For ME2 it has to be Jacobs loyalty mission there was just an aura of suspense surrounding that mission that kept me wanting to know more answers, archangels recruitment mission comes a close second ...

Virmire, by far.

It had so many great moments packed into that mission. The confrontation with Wrex, Kirrahe's 'hold the line' speech, the revealing conversation with Sovereign, the first confrontation with Saren, and the awful choice Shepard is faced with on Virmire. Vimire also benefits from good level design, fun gameplay, and one of the better tracks in the game.

Novaria!? I have to think pretty far back (like, two decades) to remember a game that managed to cram that many bugs and glitches into such a short space of time. And the dialogue and voice acting, especially with Liara there, were the absolute nadir of the series.

Taking everything into account - gameplay, atmosphere, story, choices, etc. - I'd have to say that my favourite overall mission is the Suicide Mission.

I take that interrupt even when I'm playing my mostly Paragon main Shepard :)

I should answer the question. I like Noveria, as I did most all the main missions. Port Hanshan is pretty neat, and it is nice that in the base you can reach the objective several different ways. I find Therum somewhat frustrating and not all that interesting (I do it first and it can be a pain on new game insanity) though. I even like Citadel: Expose Saren.

The mission structure in ME2 is a lot different. I like a lot of the missions from the second game better than the story missions in the first one. Suicide Mission was very good, especially the first time you play it and you may or may not know what you are doing. LOTSB was good all around. Haestrom is probably my favorite recruitment mission ("I wish Shepard were here..."), again mainly due to the action and the music. I agree with Another_Golden_Dragon's opinion about Horizon as well... was not a happy reunion with Ash ("I've had enough of this colony.")

My personal list

1)Noveria (complex mission with good Mako part and multiple options in dealing with problems plus very good atmosphere)
2) Feros (really like the scenario Skyscrapers/Highways, plus some interesting sub-missions snd different possibilities in dealing with problems)
3)LoTSB (Liara and cars...do not need to add anything more)
4) Samara recruiting mission (while it could have been more complex with maybe some investigative part...it is still a good and catchy mission)

Didn't like the Suicide Mission too much Hollywood in it for me as well for Virme the story was good but i really disliked the general atmosphere in that planet...to me it didn't fell right with the dramatic moment
