Is it generally agreed that Noveria is by far the best mission in the entire series -  unsurpassed dramatically. brilliant writing (mostly), and unforgettable characterization?  It is also is well up there (ME1 vintage implementation) in terms of gameplay and combat.

Bioware has so far not come close - and I seriously wonder if they can or will in ME3.

Notwithstanding, I am of course open to other views, ill-concieved and erroneous though they may be.

[disclaimer - as a late comer to the series, this may have been
thoroughly hashed through  - if so, apologies - i
never fail to impress myself by rediscovering the obvious.]

Have to agree. Noveria is the least linear mission of both games and is my personal favorite. My other favorite missions in ME1 are Virmire and Feros. Favorite ME2 mission include the Suicide mission, the Derelict reaper, Garrus's Recruitment and the Collector ship.

Just in the middle of a first renegade run-through on insanity (i took my best shot at recreating Bryan Cranston as Walter White/Heisenberg Shep for inspiration) but even so i feel like i need a shower after betraying Gianna and using the bug spray. Maybe I'm just a wuss but no other section gets me as twisted on renegade - the potency to do after a dozen or more play-throughs is really why its at the top of my list

Also, as I may have mentioned before, I am in love with Gianna - the only real woman in ME.

just in case i may seem a bit monolithic, other favs include Talis LM for really terrific dialog options; Haestrom and Citadel just because the action is so good and varied, hard to say about LotSB - its so very good it really should have been part of the game - its really an entire mini-story with 2 or 3 separate missions and I'd go with Haglaz as the best, Arrival is really an epilogue, and a transition to ME3 - good in itself and some pretty tough fights - doubt I will ever get the Obj Rho award unless I play it on casual.  Virmire's ground action is great - coulda done with more of that and less Mako - which gets old for me by the time i get there, and of course there is Kirrahe, the VS choice, Wrex and Rana.and we finally get to meet Sovvy

For me it's the Suicide Mission and Collector Ship. I haven't played ME yet though hopefully I'll get it this week.

Suicide Mission.
Its why I even bother too make 18 ME2 play throughs.

Its quite a challenge, and it's great experimenting too test what characters can do certain things, and prove others wrong (Example: Miranda led both teams and didn't die. Most times your supposed to use a different character. I proved people who said that (people I mean my brother) )
And see which ones fail.

It's fun, you become an adrenaline freak, you get a heart-attack from your heart racing, and so on.
Great experiences.

I got ME2 first also, but I liked it so much I stopped early in my first playthrough, bought ME1 and got thoroughly immersed before I went back to ME2 - I suspect you'll develop a very different perspective on the ME universe

As far as the SM is concerned, my main motivation in developing a total renegade is to hit the relay totally unprepared (with a shep I'm not invested in)   - so far, most of my squaddies make it and Shep lives to fight another day - looking to change that.

OP, I've been on these boards for a long time and I'm pretty sure the Virmire is the most popular mission of the series.

In fact, I've never heard anyone say Noveria is the best mission. I'm not saying it isn't, I just question your whole "its agreed Noveria is the best by far" line.

For me its a tie between all 4 main missions in ME (Noveria, Feros, Virmire, Ilos).

The biggest thing I have against the Collector Base mission is the fact that it's the furthest thing from a suicide mission. Too much of a walk in the park in terms of difficulty.

In fairness, I have to say that the mission on Virmire, especially when played just before going to Ilos built the most tension in the first game. Actually, the most tension in the series so far. It was pretty difficult playing as an infiltrator. The moments with Wrex, determining who was going to survive, and the confrontation with Saren.

Kirrahe's "hold the line." All military bravo, chest pounding. No offense. Prefer to get job done and go home. -- Mordin.

IMO the most difficult mission in the entire game was the Collector Ship on Insane. All those platforms and your timing had to be perfect. I never went through so much medigel. I went through as a Soldier with Reave, along with Samara and Miranda (I think she has warp, if not her someone else with Warp). After three hrs the ADD kicked in and that was over.

Suicide Mission and Virmire.

Kirrahe's speech was the  moment I realized that this series was something special while the Suicide Mission was awesome from the moment you entered the Omega 4 Relay.

Don't forget how it shows just how useless most of you team actually is. A handful out of a dozen is actually used, the rest get a tiny cameo cutscene at best during the mission!

In any case my favorite mission for ME1 would have to be the one where you have to help an alliance outpost hold off waves of rachni. I loved that for a variety of reasons, one that we actually get to interact with human military, and two that it showed off the alliance "frontier" and its vulnerability in a tangible form. Plus it remined me of starship troopers.

In ME2 that would go to Tali's recruitment mission. One of the few times in the game where you have a choice of tactical options for the battlefield, plus lots of dialogue and a couple of choices to boot~

Illos hands down. The work on ambient atmosphere sold me right away.
A close second would be the Citadel tower battle.
And if LoTSB counts as one mission overall, definitely that for number three.

Mordins loyalty mission - i like the ambiguity of the entire problem and how Mordin handles it, Big minus though is that Shep probably has the most retarded responses in the entire series there though.

Still my favorite.

For me ME missions are more memorable than ME2 missions for some reason, yet I'm unable to really pick my favourite mission from ME. For me missions in ME just work very well together and I can't pick if missions where I would be like I wanted more of this or less of that. Some sort of perfect balance for me.

In ME2 mission on Illium where you recruit Thane had some good moments and I also liked Tali's loyalty mission, research ship part of the mission is great. For DLC missions Kasumi and LotSB the best.
Actual Suicide Mission through Omega relay is good, not as memorable as final missions on Ilos and Citadel in ME but good.

Funny now I think of it. Somehow ME missions feel like there is more variety in them than in ME2. Also there is something that bothers me with ME2 level design.

Still, ME2 is one of the best games I ever played and I think it's important for the series that it is different from ME and not the same stuff all over again.

Noveria was my favorite mission in ME1, but  Samara and Kasumi's loyalty missions, Lair of the Shadow Broker, and of course the suicide mission all top Noveria.

My top five would be this;

(1) LotSB (Awesome in all aspects even better if Liara is your LI)
(2) Noveria (Awesome all around final fight was buggy though)
(3) Virmire (Sovereign dialogue, Saren dialogue, Kirrahe speech and a tough choice -- great planet)
(4) Overlord (Simon Templeman is awesome -- actually made the Hammerhead not to bad too)
(5) Suicide Mission (Great minus the baby reaper)

Without ranking between them:

Virmire, Noveria, Ilos+Battle of the Citadel, Garrus' RM, Garrus' LM, Mordin's RM, Kasumi's LM, LotSb.

Yeah, it's Noveria for me too. Then probably either Virmire or LotSB.

Funnily enough, despite the nature of it, my favourite in vanilla ME2 is actually probably Thane's recruitment, even though it's linear as hell. There's just something very atmospheric about it. The opening with the car trip to the Dantius Towers may have been the first bit of ME2 I saw, but it's still one of my favourites. That opening just seems to have a lot of what I like about classic sci-fi, reminding me of Blade Runner as the flying car goes through the majestic Illium skyline. The music, the cinematics and overall style are fantastic from start to finish in that mission, especially how the music builds as you go and I love the windy bridge just before the end. Cinematically the reveal of Thane is great too. Again, one of the earliest reveals, and yet one of the best even today, IMO. It may be linear as hell, but I always have a blast and immerse myself so much in that mission.

Visually - lower Ilos and exterior Citadel battle.

Virmire, really? Except for the Reaper meeting and the vision, i don't get the attraction at all.

Terror_K applauding something linear in ME2? Never thought I'd see that anytime soon.

Yeah, Terror is just full of surprises these days.

Positively so, most of the time.

If you'll check the OP,  it is a question - " IS IT [emphasis added] agreed etc. "   I was really interested in how others felt about their favs, but thought it would be too chikensh*t to ask "whatdoyouthinkisthebest.yaddayadda" without laying something on the line - OTH I'm not SO stupid as to claim my judgment is definitive on something as subjective and controversial - especially on BSN

I think I've made a pretty good case, notwithstanding, based on key dramatic and narrative elements - especially the Rachni Queen encounter, which for sheer brilliance of writing, staging and drama (voicing,  setting, content) is,
I will assert the best done scene of the entire series. - nearly steals the show from Benezia's death and the Mu relay revelation.   All the lines about "musics" and "colors" and "we are the mother" could have so easily come off forced, lame, corny and trite - but wow did they nail it!  If there's an oscar for video-game voice-acting, this is my nominee:

"This one serves as our voice..."
