This is bugging me in every playthrough. In act 3 Sandal mentions, that he sees a scary old lady at night. Bodhan does not believe him. However - giving Sandals special abilities, I find it highly unlikely, that he is just imaginating the lady. Could it be Flemeth contacting him for some reason? Or does he see Hawkes mum after her transformation and is frightened by her look?
I tried everything: talked to Sandal every time, when I was at home, searched the whole estate and even the whole of Hightown - no scary old lady (well, except for Meredith of course )
What dod you think is the secret behind this. Maybe it is a glimpse of things to come...

Flemeth watches...everything. And everyone.

There hasn't been any official confirmation regarding who Sandal is referring to, but the common speculation is that it's Asha'Bellanar (I believe he even comments on her laugh?). But, for all we know, he could be dreaming - having a quasi-Fade experience - and is seeing some other entity.

I was thinking that the ghost of Leandra could be haunting the Hawke estate, but Flemeth could be another possibility.

Slavers lived in the house prior to Hawke too, so who knows?

Since Sandal knows "mabari speak", I wonder why Sandal doesn't just bark and scare the "scary lady" away? Perhaps he could swing on the chandelier and swoop down on her? Hopefully he wouldn't do anything that might burn the estate down.

"There's an old lady that watches me. She has a scary laugh."

Seems pretty much to be Flemeth.

Agreed, I cannot think of anyone else in the series so far that has a laugh that is that unique ^_^

Since Sandal is pretty unique himself, it is hardly surprising that Flemeth would have an interest in him, particularly as he would seem to have the gift of prophesy. However, here's an interesting thought - the carta dwarves in Legacy mention that one of Sandal's parents may have been an Aeducan - the assumption would be that this was a female and that is why he was abandoned in the Deep Roads because he was the wrong sex. However, what if the Aeducan parent was male and his mother was Flemeth? That would account for his pretty unique abilities - may be Flemeth "abandoned" him in the Deep Roads where Bodhan would find him, or may be she really did abandon him because he was male and never thought he would survive, so now that he has, she has started taking an interest again.

That mental image is.... beyond disturbing. Posted Image

What i find funny is that, Sandal can face down a horde of darkspawn or demons and not bat an eye, but when Flemeth does her old lady laugh it chills him to the bone.

Well, Flemeth *is* a shapeshifter. Perhaps she spent some time as a smexy female dwarf.

Gene pool aside, Sandal may simply recognize that Flemeth is an "other" - possibly not an abomination, or any type of mortal. She made be a god or something equally ancient. Hence, the fear (darkspawn can be dealt with - all powerful old hags, not so much). And heck, it's a hell of a laugh...it promises potential wickedness. And wicked isn't necessarily evil, mind you.

I personally like Flemeth laugh :-) . But it seems, that it's most likely her, Sandal refers to. I wonder, what will come of that - hopefully, there is something coming out of that in DA3. I just played the scene again in my recent playthrough and found especially Sandals helpless look at the end scary.

I never viewed Flemeth a scary old lady. For some reason I like her. And I only killed her because Morrigan said so ...

I guess that theory is kinda like a train wreck. You just can't look away. My brain is now trying to connect smexy!dwarf Flemeth, King Aeducan, Sandal, and the dragon that was sealed/trapped above the dwarven throne room.

Man, that quest was so hard on my Cousland. On the one hand, totally in love with Morrigan and completely invested in her protection. On the other hand, owed Flemeth a life-debt for pulling them off the Tower of Ishal, and also basically liked the old bat. On the other other hand, Flemeth is an ancient enemy of Highever. On the other other other hand, were it not for Flemeth the Couslands wouldn't have ruled Highever in the first place. And of course Flemeth can't make it easy and be like "Yes I totes intend to kill Morrigan" or "nope she's fine, I'm not going to hurt her," no, she's gotta be all cryptic and Flemeth-y.

But yeah, I don't know. I never got the sense that Sandal was talking about Flemeth, and it still doesn't make sense to me. She's not particularly scary, Hawke is by no means important or interesting enough for her to be hanging around in the Amell estate six years later (and I'm not even a Hawke-hater), and even if Hawke were, stalking around houses at night seems rather... beneath her. At the very least she'd turn into a cat and just wander around undetected at her leisure, you know?

Then again, I can't think who else he could mean.

Ah, but Flemeth might be scary to Sandal. She is, after all, something otherworldly, and he may be keen enough to see her true nature.

And she may not be prowling around the estate for purposes of watching Hawke. She may be there specifically for the dwarf - perhaps to find out his secrets, or whisper some to him like a lullaby.

I agree - if Flemeth hangs around in the estate, it would be for Sandal no for Hawke.

I think it's Flemeth, definitely. Poor Sandal.

I dunno. I've never found Flemeth's laugh to be scary. I personally don't even think she's evil. In fact I imagine in the end she'll prove to be more friend than foe. I think it's another one of Sandal's preminissions of the future like his,
"One day the magic will come back. All of it. Everyone will be just like they were. The shadows will part, and the skies will open wide. When he rises, everyone will see."

Either that or he was as affected by the lyrium idol as the other dwarves and maybe could 'see' Meredith through it. She was pretty scarey.

Whenever I watch that part Sandal doesn't look so helpless as he looks  "I know I shouldn't do this but if you don't look away, you're gonna see...ahhhh" and he just stares you down as he scratches his butt.  The first time I got that part I laughed so hard I teared up I just found his seemingly genuine fear combined with his buttscratchin staredown hilarious!

Well, originally I thought that the scary old lady was famed comic strip character Mary Worth visiting him and lecturing him about swinging on the chandelier, but then the caffine buzz from the eleven cups of coffee that I'd just consumed subsided somewhat and I realized how silly a notion that was.  Clearly if Mary Worth were to start nagging someone from DA:2 she'd start with Gamlin.

My initial thought (post Mary Worth) was indeed Flemmeth/Asha Belinare/Old Hag Who Talks To Much/She Who Is Not On Morrigan's Christmas Card List.  This makes sense to me given there is clearly more to Sandle then meets the eye.  Thus Flemmeth would have enough reason to peek in on him from time to time.

I still say it'd be weirdly undignified for Flemeth to creep around the estate at night.

I doubt that Flemeth is actually there physically but either a spiritual projection of herself or simply in his dreams. If Corypheus could mentally influence people in Kirkwall and Feynriel could kill a bunch of rapists all the way from Tevinter, I'm sure Flemeth is capable of touching Sandal's mind at a distance.

Huh. Good point. That's actually pretty plausible. No way Flemeth's less powerful than a somniari.
