Plain as the title suggests. Is it necessary? Should he die? I say.....yep, but in a fantasticalacious way.
Depens on how "fantasticalacious" his death is. Otherwise it's a no.

But I think a heroic death should be an option you can orchestrate with not too much effort. I have one or two Shepards who appear to be lined up for such a fate.

To be honest I'm not opposed to Shepard dying. I'd want all the romances and relationships to be fleshed out before we came to that crossroads, but if a major decision hinges on Shepard making the ultimate sacrifice.... I'd accept that.
If they don't kill Shepard at the end though, I truly hope they don't give us some play-by-play of what happens to everyone after the Reaper threat has been quelled. Liara reprised her roll as the Shadow Broker, amassing corruptible information on most major operators in Citadel space. Behooved by Shepards' influence, she used the data to sculpt a (insert renegade or paragon reference here) galaxy. Urdnot Wrex led the Krogan clans under his command into a era of unmatched strength and glory. United, the clans thrived for centuries until an untimely death left clan Urdnot without a leader. The ensuing chaos as the clans fought for the position left the Krogan nation more fragile and torn than ever. Etc. Etc.
If something like that was put in prior to the credits I'm sure it would be based on your renegade/paragon attitudes throughout the game. But needless to say I absolutely deplore the idea of the game ending with that.
If Shepard does survive, I'd much prefer Bioware leave it open to personal speculation and fantasy. I'd like to envision what my own Shepards' future would end up like, not be fed some unsatisfying story like they chose to do in Dragon Age: Origins.

Shepard was resurrected once and frankly, he no longer belongs in the world. He's a character out of place and out of time. He was brought back to fight the Reapers and their servants and once that is done he will be an anachronism. He belongs more in death's realm than the realm of the living. If not, you doom him to being a revenant amongst those who will never understand or commiserate with him.

And of course he should be able to survive.

Personally, I think that that is the only option. Shepard's last act amongst the living should be to push the button on a doomsday weapon that ends the threat once and for all and doesn't leave anything of his body around but carbonized atoms so that even his tomb will be empty. In a sense, there is a kind of justice in that ending.

I would like half of my Shepards to die and half to survive. But great response. You've thought this one through.

Do I think Shepard should die: NO
If Mass Effect was not a triology epic, and more of a personal or dramatic piece then I would be okay with a tragic hero. ***SPOILER*** In Red Dead the main character dies, but I wasn't disappointed. That death was inevitable, and just illustrated the changing of times. The death of the west. It had meaning ***END SPOILER*** If Shepard were to die just because it can pull on the heartstrings then it would no doubt make a lot of people feel like their journey was a waste of time. Not everyone I'm sure, but most people, myself included.

That's a very mystical way of looking at it.
or to put it another way; bollocks.
No one is 'meant for this world', you're either alive or dead, Shepards alive, and has just as much right to be wandering about enjoying existing as anyone else. More so infact, because they have killed the **** out of thousands of other living things to continue to do so, and saved millions of other living things in the process.
You want to believe theres some magical metaphysical alternate universe you magically go to when your body eventually ceases to function and your brain shuts down, then good for you, but it's an appaling arguement for why a fictional character we've all spent hundreds of hours shapping into someone we are deeply invested in emotionally to have to be killed off. I don't believe in that stuff, and neither do any of my Shepards. Some of them might be willing to sacrifice themselves for the greater good, but none would want to, and certainly they certainly wouldn't feel it was right or that they had to die.

To be hohnest I think that we should have
an otion to live or die, for isntance if we do certain things in teh
game we might live or ie, or we can choose to give shepards life for his
team or be a batsard and let them die.
Which is basically the default ending of Fallout 3. Which was crap, pissed of an enourmous number of people, and was thankfully fixed with a vastly better and more varied selection of endings in Broken Steel. Dying to save the world/those you love/the status quo is clichéd and bloody annoying, especially when they force you into it with a wonderful choice of kill your character or be an arse.
