Just poped into my mind a while ago,i really prefare the more realistic looking characters and enviroments that where in dragon age origins what i mean by realistic not over the top armour styles and cartoony characters like in DA2.So for future games would you like a witcher style engine for the games because the current engine they are using for DA2 is not good enough in todays standards.

I would also prefer a dirty, realistic style. Something that looks more like real life than some colorful painting. Could say even DA:O was a bit cartoony already. So what are the chances?

I don't really know enough about engines or who uses which and what is possible etc. But I think a new engine for Bioware games is overdue? They seem to use the same, even if upgraded, for many years now.

Artistic style and graphic's level don't concern me at all as long as the story is great and characters are deep and interesting. BG trilogy still rules in my book.

Yeah, they need a new engine. But if they insist on using the same one.

Go back to this art design/style, please.

I would absolutely prefer a more realistic style over the cartoony look they went for in DA2.

Yes, please. The childish art direction of DAII was irritating; even more with the amazing work on Origins and Awakening.

I still don't see how the characters are more cartoony in dragon age 2. Well, besides elves, they look about the same to me.

Although whatever they decide to do, I seriously hope that the landscapes are more colorful. I'm sick of seeing so much brown.

It would be a hard choice for me, as I personally like the character designs more in DA2 where everyone didn't look emaciated and have chimpanzee arms.

However, I much prefer the environment design of Origins. So it would be a tough decision to make, because the two art styles of the different games don't lend very well to each other.

Hm, I never thought the DA2 style art style was cartoony. It might be a bit too clean, but that is it. In fact, I would like a bit more color and vibrancy. Dull browns and greys are getting tiring after two games.

There seems to be less detailed texturing to the faces, mainly, combined with the changes to how the lighting is applied. End effect, they wind up looking smoother, which people associate with cell-shading and other flat colour styles common in the cartoons.

I have to agree, DA:O looked much more mature than DA2, just in terms of visuals. Things were more ... dirty, gritty, dark. People looked less like during a foto-shoot of a fashion magazine.

*sigh*

Does that mean they have to lag behind in terms of presentation? This isn't some indie studio or small dev company it's big. I'd be happy with just a new engine. Look at Mass Effect 3 it looks pretty great ofcourse it's limited but still very pretty. Origins is ugly and had the same generic story Bioware is know for and DA2 was even worse but there is no reason we can't ask for a good looking game and a good story. They are not mutually exclusive. Witcher 2, Deus Ex: Huamn Revolution and I'll throw in Drakensang I like the graphics and love the gameplay.

The more realistic the better.

Also, the faces need an overhaul in DA3. In DA2 they lacked definition, were flat, and characters were very similar looking to each other.

Yup. Not to mention how everyone all of a sudden has neon colored eyes too.

They should either try and go for a more grounded, authentic and real look or go totally and obviously stylized. DA2 just seems to sit in an odd middle ground where I'm not sure what they were aiming for visually.

Not just realistic. I prefer photo realistic. For example like this:

It takes days to render above images but could BioWare make a renderer engine that's capable to process such realism in few seconds? I certainly hope so.

I honestly don't have much of a problem with the art style and graphical look of DA 2, but I suppose I'm not fussed either way. I'd rather they focus on other aspects of the game though.

The graphical and art style changes to DA 2 surely would have contributed to DA 2 being a bit of a rushed game so I would rather they DIDN'T have to overhaul the game a second time for DA 3 and they can just focus on other things.

You say DA2 is "cartoony," but I just finished polishing up a new Awakening save and the word that comes to mind is "flat."

I don't really see what's so realistic about the graphics in Origin unless dreariness is synonymous with "realism." When I was playing it, I didn't mind them, but now I've played DA2 and I far prefer the look of it.

I'm a big fan of strong colour and more variety than shades of brown and grey. DA2's art style does that. The problem with DA2's art assets rarely come from the art style itself, methinks.

I also think that visuals similar to The Witcher 2 are something to strive for with Dragon Age. The art design simply has more weight and suits itself better to the underlying world and themes (and DA:O) than the colorful palette and somewhat cartoony style of DA2. And in regard to the cartoon/anime criticism: Fenris, Sebastian, Orsino - all great examples of how a Dragon Age character should not look like. Generally, if you look at visual changes, check whether the changed character would have looked out of place in Origins, and you know whether he/she fits into the game world. Kossith - absolutely fine. Elves & darkspawn - not so much.
