Yep, more realistic please, DA2 style is about as bad as you can get.

If you want cartoonish animations then go the JRPG way as they are the masters.

I remember the very first time that I saw a trailer (I guess) of DA:O made up of scenes from the game and I think I actually laughed out loud. I'd never heard of DA or Bioware before, but I remember thinking that this game looked so 90s! I thought 'who would buy and play that?'

Of course, I ended up buying, playing and loving it :P. Maybe it was just a bad trailer. I'm not sure if it was an official one. But the style has grown on me so much that I don't want it to change too much because it has a certain charm that is so recognisably Bioware.

I also see what people mean by DA2 looking more cartoony than Origins. I don't mind it. I guess if I was forced to choose, I'd choose the Origins styles. Maybe.

I just don't want more of this. Some of the details especially on characters was terrible in DA, some of the hair and beards and faces...

I mean is this a beard or a tattoo, honestly, it looks like someone drew on his chin and neck.

Also too much of this. Same exact knight copied and pasted. Then look at these heads, mouths and noses. LEGOS comes to mind, and this happened a lot.

Personally i prefered DA:O realistic design a lot more, the reason i didnt like DA2's art style was because of the "cartoony" or stylised visuals. The environments in DA2 overall were too static and clean looking compared to origins which I didnt like, but if DA3 had the same style it wouldnt be a deal-breaker or anything.

I liked DA2's visual style. I prefer stylization to realism because I think the closer you get to realism without perfecting it, the more obvious the flaws are. Meanwhile, with stylization, you can use the limitations of your hardware to push an aesthetic.

I also prefer bright colours to brown and grey.

Guess that makes me an animu weeaboo despite having been anti-anime since sometime a decade ago. Shrug.

I'm an anime weeaboo, but still prefer my games dark 'n brown/grey like Morrowind (though I'll never agree that DA:O or Morrowind were overly brown/grey, beats the purpose to argue this).

edit: though "true" anime-style games are a different matter. they are few though, and most companies wouldn't know how to make one, especially western ones (it's very much about the content of the game and with what mentality/feel the artistic style is played out. only Japanese have a true sense for it, as far as I know).

It had a more anime-ish tint to it. Just look at Fenris, the way you and your characters swipe their swords, jump attack, or charge attack with a Dragon Ball Z/anime-style blur. I liked DA:O because the attacks were more realistic (e.g. it takes more time to swing a two-handed sword). But Bioware wants a "mainstream" audience (which they have decided is action game and CoD players) and has made the combat flashier for them. I'd like DA:O's art style but with better graphics. I don't think we'll see it, though, based on comments from Laidlaw about them being happy with their direction.

I totally agree with this. I've never seen an uglier elf than Fenris, really...he looks as if he's got anorexia, so friggin' thin. I bet Zevran in DA:O still had more flesh on his bones than him. So yeah, I like the art style of DA:O far better than DA2, which is an abomination in itself as a sequel to DA:O. Not to mention Isabela's exaggerated breasts...Also, it's obvious the faces in DA2 haven't been rendered enough, they look really gritty at times...like in the case of Anders and Alistair (I still don't forgive Bioware for what they did to him in comparison to DA:O, lol...). DA:O's style all the way for me! :P

I'd like the DA2 style to incorporate some aspects of the DA:O style, namely making things a little darker, dirtier and less outrageous animations or anime characters like Fenris (I liked him but watching him fight was a bit ludicrous, at least the lyrium tattoos gave some excuse for his oddness)

Overall I liked the new style though.

If all the characters in Dragon Age 3 were Bunraku Puppets it would be awesome and you know it!

DA2's visuals weren't necessarily bad, but I would say it was a lot less realistic than DAO. Changing the style from the first game wasn't needed, it was fine the way it was. BW was quoted something to the tune of "giving Dragon Age it's own distinctive look so it's easily recognizable as soon as you see it". I say they already accomplished that with DAO, but what do I know ? That and DA2's style is hardly unique, one only has to take a gander at WoW, it's very similar.

So do I want DA3 and any future games to be less "cartoony" ? Yes. Keep it grounded in realism, more grit, more dirt, more REAL.

DA2's art style, like so many things, was changed to be unique and appeal to a wider audience.

They wanted to flashier battle animations to appeal to the CoD fans. They wanted to anemic elves and pointy armors and weapons to appeal to jRPG fans. They wanted to use the grey and horned Qunari to appeal to... I don't know... the diseased bovine fans?

In reality, it appealed to none of these fans. And only sought to alienate the fans they already had.

Bravo, art design. Bravo.

Snarky post is snarky.

I preferred the look of Dragon Age II as a whole. Only thing I didn't like was the avatar elves. So pretty up the elves and retain the rest of the DAII look and I'm content.

I hate the gritty realistic style of games. too brown for my tastes, make backgrounds beautiful to look at... not this brown **** in just about every game.

also fenris, sebastion orsino and femhawke are great examples of how a character SHOULD look like. btw Witcher 2 was an ugly game.

I´m not against the style. I´m against the lack of quality and consistency in an on going series.

Yeah, who needs a consistent aesthetic when you could just put lots of spikes on things?

That I want the game more realistic doesn't mean I want the game only in brown. That solely depends on where the game takes us: small village in Ferelden = likely to be rather brown, capital of Orlais = likely to be amazingly colorful.

And although I haven't played Witcher 2 based on what I've seen of the game I have no idea how you can say it's ugly. Maybe you're just not that much into the looks of more down to earth western fantasy settings?

It would make me very happy if future DA games returned to the less cartoony art style of DAO. I honestly don't think that's on the cards for DA3 though. :(

Maybe if DA3 doesn't perform up to expectations they will re-assess their approach at that time. Gotta say the MP rumors have me pretty pessimistic for the future of the franchise.
