Was DA2 really that big of a disappointment?

For me yes, it was.

Now I'm playing "The Witcher 2" and oh........ If I had to compare them.....

Started up the witcher 2. Had to run from a dragon in a burning building while fighting off an army, all in the first battle. I got owned. The tutorial didnt help,  so i quit to desktop. Havent touched it since

I've taken a break from my first playthrough with DA:O (Dead Trenches...man, there are some hairy battles in the Deep Roads) to try DA 2.  Thus far, DA 2 is a below average game even as a standalone let alone a sequel (right now it's hovering at 5 for me).  It thus far pales in comparison to other games released in 2011.  Obvious from the get-go it was rushed, the graphics are nothing to get excited about (don't get me started on the terrible model renders), the gameplay is not all that fun, and the story has done less than zip grabbing my interest, and Hawke...meeh.

Not too promising.  Right now I'm damn well bored, itching for a return to DA:O.  It might be a few days before I can get myself to play DA 2 again.  Totally disappointed early on.

Dissapointment leads to an over negative reaction. I replayed DA2 after months without touching Origins or any other similiar Bioware game (BG, BG2 etc...) and I can tell you, I'm early into Act III and have only completed Legacy and I'm loving it. Fifty One hours in, and playing on hard.

The only major complaints I have is:

1.) Waves
2.) No FF on Normal
3.) Recycled Areas
4.) Lack on consequence

Roleplaying is still pretty much there, but not as solid or as in depth as Origins. I think people make the mistake of treating DA2 as if it were Origins.

I was not expecting DA 2 to be DA:O 2 (would be hard to do since I've yet to finish my first play-through of DA:O, but I knew from the outset DA 2 was no sequel to Origins).  I also have no hate towards DA 2.  It's only a game, so hating it would go beyond what is necessary.  That said, I won't provide any excuses for a product or provide a special circumstance to hopefully make it seem better, as you did with not having played anything for awhile.  My reaction, I feel, is not overly negative.  It's not a game I enjoy, bottom line.

A game should stand on its own and in comparison to others.  If it pales in comparison, which DA 2 does, to a number of games both current and past, then there's a reason (in this case, multiple ones).  Going in with few expectations, I still found DA 2 to be a boring and very subpar gaming experience.  Not everyone will and I'm glad for them if they have a more enoyable time than what I did.

I liked DA2.

Glad you did.

For me, $60 for a disjointed spin-off containing one static city and little choice doesn't compute. DA2 showed glimpses on how good the DA team can be. Hope they will be given a better chance next time, and not be so stingy in choice.

I really hate how people still subscribe to the fallacy that people who hated DAII wanted another DAO, meaning a game focused solely on Wardens.

That just isn't the case at all.

EDIT: for clarity. And for Odin!!

I wanted another game like DAO. Many people did. I cannot believe that it's seen as a BAD thing, that people wanted a game that was much like its acclaimed predecessor. Then again, I liked DA2, but DAO was a much better game IMO. I didn't want a complete clone, mind you, but I wanted something similar with a different story.

Then again, Star Control 2 was very different from the first Star Control (changing from a strategy game to an RPG) and it worked, so I had some hopes.

I wanted another DAO in the sense that I wanted some finality and continuation of the events and characters from Origins.  Gameplay mechanics in DA2 were far superior though.

My biggest gripe about DA2 though was the repeated environments, glitches, and hit-or-miss plots.  It seems from the DLCs though, that Bioware is fixing these mistakes and I look forward to future titles.

I don't see how wanting a sequel to an award winning game is seen as a bad thing, either, but from what I've read in the forums, many fans of DA 2 make the excuse that the only reason someone finds DA 2 disappointing is because they expected DA:O 2, which is rather silly.  The DA:O 2 expectation could be responsible for some of the disappointment, yes, but at the end of the day, if DA 2 were a good game, even those who wanted DA:O 2 could see the qualities of DA 2.

When you get down to it, all any gamer wants is an entertaining, high quality game.  If it is a quality game, it gets that kind of buzz.  If not, well, we see what we do with DA 2 and a myriad of other average to below average games.

Here's hoping Bioware/EA do better with DA 3.
