So, Dragon Age 3 hasn't even been officially announced yet and already an "anonymous insider" is saying there will be Dragon Age multiplayer? With people able to play as dragons? That's just ridiculous.

Besides, everyone already knows that the best way to have DA multiplayer would be a Gauntlet style four-player co-op.

That’s right, Dragon Age is going multiplayer

Okay, sounds good.

The multiplayer is supposedly an arena-based affair

Crap... no it doesn't sound good actually.

Apparently, dragons will also be playable in Dragon Age multiplayer

Ok, now I'm not putting much faith into this rumour...

What do you mean "Gauntlet" style ?
But yes, 4-player co-op is how I envisionned things. Preferably not a full-scale campaign but more like multiple small-scale adventures, which is much more convenient for a multiplayer game where every player's schedule does not necessarily allow them to play for hours upon hours at the same time. Also means you don't have to deal with long-term consequences of choices made by other players.

Sounds unbelievable, but then again, so did the idea of Mass Effect 3 having multiplayer a year ago. Or Dead Space 2. Or any other number of games having multiplayer shoehorned in.

I am not convinced either. However I think it is not like Kotaku to just publish without backup. I guess we will see but if this is true I am not sure I like it. Hopefully the official word will describe it better and I will exhale ...

It might be just a rumour, but if it isn't,

a) This "insider" probably needs a talking to, because that's not very cool.
B) Firky, old school BG fan as she may be, is totally up for it.

PS. (This insider doesn't even know if its DA3 or standalone? So ....)

Gauntlet style. As in, similar to the Gauntlet games.

In the unlikely event that this exists, it sounds more like a spin-off than a component of DA3.

Or like ME3 it could be 'attached' to the game but not part of the main campaign.

I would love a dev to swoop in right now and squash this. Or dare I say, confirm it. Suspense is killing me a teeny bit.

I'm not surprised in the least. I'm actually almost certain DA3 will have multiplayer.

If this is true I can only hope that they ditch the entire idea and focus their resources on actually making the singleplayer good

Frostbite Engine? An arena style PvE / PvE multiplayer component? Sounds like Horde mode for Dragon Age.

I'm sorry, but please say it's not true. If it is, then EA's "every game must have multiplayer" just shot both BioWare and the Dragon Age franchise in the foot. If they want to introduce multiplayer, then go whole hog and make it possible to have a joint adventure, not some tacked on horde-mode/deathmatch style gameplay.  I don't care about PvP for even a second, and PvE just sounds like some paltry small-scale version of MMO raiding adapted to Dragon Age.  I don't know how to put this more simply: games do not need multiplayer in order to sell.

Either I'm considering this a very sad indictment on BioWare's current direction, or someone managed a pretty incredible lie/troll at the expense of Kotaku.au.

The full story

That's right, Dragon Age is going multiplayer. The role-playing franchise is, according to an insider, going beyond singleplayer for the first time, and warriors won't simply face off against each other in combat.

Apparently, dragons will also be playable in Dragon Age multiplayer, giving players the chance to go head-to-head with foes in fire-breathing, swooping-through-the-air dragon form.

The insider wasn't sure if Dragon Age multiplayer was going to be part of a full, stand-alone title (ala Dragon Age 3) or available separately as a downloadable game. It is apparently being developed on DICE's Frostbite 2 game engine (used for Battlefield 3), and even early-on the game apparently looks stunning.

The multiplayer is supposedly an arena-based affair and features player versus environment (PvE) elements as well as player versus player (PvP), as well as humans fighting dragons. Details on what PvE battles entail are scant.

The first Dragon Age, Dragon Age: Origins, was a single-player role-playing game released in 2009. A sequel, Dragon Age II, was released earlier this year. It was also a single-player role-playing game.

Kotaku is following up with EA and will update this post should the company comment.

I'm sorry, but that sounds so [marmoset] stupid. Seriously, I hope this another example of [wombat] Kotaku journalism because my god that sounds dumb as [aardvark]. And when the inevitable denials come from BioWare its not like anyone will believe them after their Boy Who Cried Wolf attitude in denying ME3's MP.

But hey, don't worry cause having a [capybara] tacked on Frostbite powered MP won't detract from single player at all! Has Bethesda's success with Skyrim taught them nothing about the viability of single player games? Nope, BioWare wants those Call of Duty numbers. Ugh....

I hope it's not true too Brock. If it is I just really hope that it doesn't take development resources away from a main campaign. Fingers crossed.

Honestly, IF this is true, it sounds an awful lot like how EA handled Medal of Honor- except DA3 will have the single player still on the old engine while the MP is on Frostbite, making for a terribly disjointed product.

If it's true and it's a downloadable MP spin-off, I'll just roll my eyes and let them be. If it's true and it's part of DA3, my expectations for that game are down an abyss.

I don't really but too much faith into this.

BUT...I have little doubt that DA3 will probably have MP in it. I'm not a MP person but I can see the writing on the wall.

Multiplayer makes sense in ME3. In DA, going around as a dragon just sounds [Pauly Shore] awful.

[Carlos Mencia] AWFUL.

Seriously Bioware, just ... no.
