So, I've played Origins all the way through a few times now, and I have never been able to get Alistair to harden. I get his approval high enough to trigger his quest, we go to Denerim, we meet his sister, I choose the dialogue option that the guides say I should to harden him ("Everyone is out for themselves. You should learn that."), and then...nothing happens. There is no follow up conversation ever and Alistair is still a whiny little bowl of jelly when it comes time for the Landsmeet.
Do I have a bug in my game or am I doing something wrong here?
Alistair never hardens.

That is how you harden Alistair; it's the only way to harden Alistair. I think you may be going to the Landsmeet too soon, or, to put it another way, doing that quest too late in the game. Alistair should talk to you back at camp about what you said to him; that's the point where he hardens.
Alistair still whines at the Landsmeet regardless, but he's more willing to stand up for himself depending how you're playing the game.

I'm really tempted to make an immature joke now about how to harden him correctly, but...well let's drop that xD
I think you might have still a too low approval rate with him, so that even after visiting his sister and using the correct line you don't get the following convo. It happened to me once that I didn't get the convo after the visit, but then I throw a gift at his head and that approval gain triggered then his concluding convo afterwards. Yet I can't remember for the sake of my life how hight it must be. Sorry. o.O
Also voicing an opinion =/= whiny.

I think his Approval has to be above 75 for the second conversation to trigger. (Or maybe it's above 80?
I usually do his quest so late in the game it isn't an issue. *makes note to commence Project Harden Alistair really early next PT*) (edited to add that the delta between the Approval for Alistair's personal quest to trigger (25+, IIRC) and the approval needed for the hardening follow-up conversation is considerable, and if you ignore him, repeatedly garner his disapproval, or neglect to give him baubles and shields, he's not going to like or trust you enough to take your advice.)
