Mass Effect game out shorly after Gears of War did and both were develoepd using the same engine at roughly the same time. Both ushered in the era of the cover shooter. The consensus is that Mass Effect had a better story while Gears of War played better. Although Mass Effect was still a much more casual friedly game sicne it didn't have the same learning curve that Gears had.

Fast forward a few years. Gears of War 2 fixes it's story mode by giving Cole and Hoffman some actual screen time while Mass Effect's cover and ammo systems were reworked to no longer be as clunky as they once were.

Still, Gears 2's multiplayer was buggy and weapon damage was nerfed, making it hard to kill anyone without explosives while Mass Effect 2 really nerfed party members by reducing their customization, number of powers and weapon damage. So while both were still considered to be good games, both of the above were severely let down a large part of their fanbase.

Fast forward to today, Mass Effect 3 is going to give players a roll ability which dramatically improves the combat while Gears of War 3 fixed all that was wrong with 2 and added so much more to the game, including a real team deathmatch mode. Both are the end of some of the most popular series of this gnereration and both have very vocal fans on thier forums. But what'll it take to get ME3 up to the high standsard of GoW3 to be the best cover shooter ever.

Then the new gen of hardware hits, DX12 becoems standard and a new trend replaces cover shooters as they go the way of turn based isometric RPGs like Fallout 2 annd Front Mission and tank control survival horror games while we wonder why we ever liked this stuff back in the day.

I hate how GOW is a console-only game. Why do they do that? There is a giant PC fanbase that could give them more money, but those idiot marketing teams love their exclusive content.

The Xbox brand would be dead without Gears of War. I'm glad it's exclusive.

You think if Nintendo published Mario and Zelda games on Xbox and Playstation, they'd still be in business?

This seems like a pointless question to me because GOW is a shooter and ME is a RPG. I would certainly hope the combat is better in GOW because that's all the game has. ME is a RPG based around choices effecting the story. If you're picking up ME games hoping they'll blow away GOW's combat then you might be mentally challenged.

The thing that makes Mass 3 better than Gears 3, at least for me, is that it's more than a shooter.

Your rebuttal was mentally challenged.

1. Mass Effect is a cover shooter with RPG elements. It's not Final Fantasy VII or Arcanum. Don't kid yourself. Also, why shouln't I be able to have fun between point A and point B?

The Gears of War series has a story - it may not be a good story, but it's there I guess.

I've been saying this for a while now: It's like RPG purists wanted Mass Effect to settle for mediocrity with one of their most important elements.

Don't kid yourself friend, ME2 and 3 are shooters with deeper character interaction and a choice system.

GOW and ME are two completley (sp) different games apart from the combat there is no need to compare them,

Also why does BSN need to make more ME>GOW threads

Well, there you go. That's how ME3 will surpass GoW3; with deeper characters and a choice system.

Locust: GGGRRR
GoG: ******* **** ****!
Myrrah: I'm Chakwas.

That's the gist of it. Then I play MP and have a ton of fun.

Agreed. That's what I get out of the whole, "Don't appeal to Halo fans" post that I keep seeing on here. As if a good choice system and fun combat are mutually exclusive. If anything, appealing to Gears fans is a smart choice from a bisniess perspective and it doesn't affect the gameplay at all. The RPG fans here are all so old-school and remember the old Final fantasy games having menu-based combat and because those were deeper than action games in terms of story they assume that a good story nodods to have passive or unfun gameplay even though Deus Ex and Morrowind changed RPGs forever a decade ago and made them more action based. And really, if you're hating in Deus Ex and Morrowind for not being menu based, you're out of your mind.

Gears of War is irrelevant. I don't play Gears of War, which means Mass Effect 3 automatically wins any 'contest' between the two.

Because comparing two similar gmaes to each otehr si soemhow wrong? It's like comparing Deus Ex 3 to Syndicate or Disgaea to Dead State.

Thats because about 90% of BSN users hate the Gears of war franchise ever since ME2 was released

No. The wrong part is considering them similar... Mass Effect plays like a TPS, true, but that is just a part of the game, and you neglecting that.

Which is funny since now the Deus Ex fans hate Mass Effect because they blame ME for the cover system. I wonder who gets blamed for the cover mechanics in Crysis 2 and Uncharted.
