What Will it Take for ME3 to Surpass GoW3?

Likewise, ME3 won't be as good graphically. Epic created the Unreal engine and so has far more experience with it. They also got to use new stuff in GoW3 that other developers using Unreal have yet to see. However, from the point of view of art direction I think ME has always been stunning - more so than Gears imo, although Gears' art style doesn't get enough credit for how good it sometimes is.
So its basically down to the story. GoW1 had a good story for what it was trying to be (the gaming equivalent of a summer blockbuster), but the sequels were a lot weaker imo. ME1 had a great story, ME2 had a slightly weaker (albeit still pretty good) story but with lots of fantastic smaller stories woven into it. Although gameplay and graphics are obviously important - particularly gameplay - a game like ME3 will live or die on the strength of its story. If it has a great story that can live up to ME1 and ME2 then I personally feel it will have surpassed GoW3.
However, if the choices from previous games actually have a real impact in ME3 then I think ME3 could surpass pretty much every game out there atm.

Oh no! Someone comparing a game with similar mechanics to another game? In what alternate universe does this possibly happen?FutureBoy81 wrote...
This is when you know Bioware and mass effect have lost the plot, comparisons between a shooter and an RPG, which of course is warranted by the OP because essentially thats what mass effect is now .

Do people not realize what they played was a third person shooter with RPG elements and horrible combat mechanics? Because...it's pretty apparent to me it was never a true RPG.

Let's cut the crap. Shooters, like any other genre, are capable of telling stories as well as any RPG. So the false elitism doesn't get us anywhere. That someone on the forums decides to start a thread about something is not indicative that the something is a problem. By your logic, I could start comparing Mass Effect to a Disney movie and that would serve as evidence that Bioware lost the plot.

That sad excuse of a system in ME1? That's what people call an RPG these days?
I've played Pokemon games with better constructed inventories and stats systems, FFS.
Not to mention that ME1 was Redundancy 101 in some places.
Like the economy system. I had absolutely no reason whatsoever to sell anything when I could just convert it to omni-gel, which in its turn made the whole electronics skill deal a tad redundant, since I didn't even know what the UI for the unlocking challenge looked like until my third playthrough.
Because I almost never ran out of omni-gel.

Also ME3 have 5 more classes to choose from, superior story, superior characters, superior aesthetics, role playing, choices and interaction with squadmates and NPC's.
So in my opinion, Mass Effect 3 surpasses Gears of War 3 in every way by miles.

They also should drop the 'RPG' part by that point and lose/gain fans accordingly. Some people still follow Mass effect because it was originally an RPG, not because they wanted another shooter. Personally I liked the ME1 combat more then ME2 and certaintly don't think making an RPG into a Shooter is an improvment.

Someone could've made a similar topic that would spurn nearly as many posts from BSN members by asking:But what'll it take to get ME3 up to the high standsard of GoW3 to be the best cover shooter ever.

They're apples and oranges, and not in the exact same category. Similar? Yes. But there are too many distinguishing mechanics and narrative styles between the 2 that you can't say Gears of War = Mass Effect. Gears of War may inspire Mass Effect(and vice versa as the sequels got made), but they do not fall in the same category. You may have had a better chance with the thread if it were 2 games far closer in its formula, such as BF3 and MW3. However, this is not the case.
Having said that, BioWare's development team is competing against more than a single game. They have to, as all developers do, compete against volumes of new titles coming out. Staying relevant through its own generation, its own console, its own genre, and in regards to its own franchise is not a walk in the park. David Jaffe had said before(And I'm paraphrasing) that "Every game that comes out is like another demon to fight off, but in a good way". You can learn something from the ideas and concepts other people may throw out, while trying to stay with the top dogs instead of holding onto their coattails.
Perhaps you should rename this topic "How will Mass Effect surpass every game made in the last 4 years?"
I hope that answered your question. Good day.
