Anyone else going to play on Nightmare from the start?

I'm probably doing normal mode the first time through. But I definitely will do nightmare my 2nd time through.

If I mod it so I can take all my companions along then I'd be most likely to. Otherwise unless there is a benefit beyond personal glory I'd save it for a later playthrough.

Starting out on Nightmare is insanity. From the reviews I've read and from what the devs themselves had said; DON'T DO IT. People who are looking for a challenge should start on Hard (or normal if you aren't really experienced with BG II/DAO type games).
If you guys DO start on Nightmare, I wish you the best, but its too insane for my tastes

I will also be starting on nightmare. Played through BG1, and iwd on hardest to get ready for this, and I'm tired of playing games of questionable difficulty. I am a bit worried that if I see the game at it's hardest right away, I'll feel as though the mystery of just how difficult the game can be will be revealed and that will decrease the game's lifespan. This may cause me to revert to hard/normal. If I do decide to play nightmare, I'm very confident that it will be difficult enough for me to never want the game to be any more challenging.

I actually think it will increase the game's lifespan by playing on Nightmare. It takes longer to make progress and feels a lot more rewarding once you do. Even though it may get frustrating at times - I'm sure it'll be worth it.
However, I don't know how unbalanced or next to impossible Nightmare will be, so I'll try to play on Nightmare - but if it's too hard I will start over on another difficulty. It should be challenging in my opinion, but not take the fun out of the game.

I can't imagine only playing one play thru of this game, so I'll likely start on normal/hard and then play nightmare with a new origin/class to keep me happy until ME2 comes out!

I would probably try hard on my 2nd or 3rd playthrough.

Nightmare. Of course. It's the only true difficulty.

Posté 01 novembre 2009 - 01:58
I normally start on normal for games (never start on easy if the option is there) just to get the feel for the game and the tactics for the fights, then I work my way up to hard the 2nd time, and nightmarish the 3rd play through

Posté 01 novembre 2009 - 02:02
I might try it here and there, but I will not use it the whole time. Considering myself, like all of you, will be new with the game, and the horror stories we've heard from some of the fights (like the ogre) it would likely be a test in futility and only ****** me/others off to play parts of the game on hard on the first run.

Will save hardcore for whenever I play with a warrior tank PC. More than likely I'll start on normal with mage PC, then hard with rogue PC and harcore after that.

Plus, when I play my other characters I don't want it to seem like I focus more on one than another. I want to play each class to it's fullest, so I don't want to play, say, a rogue on normal and blow through the game in 80 hours, then go through on insane with a warrior and spend 120. It will cause you to learn one class less than another, and I am trying to keep it consistent.

I'll be joining the ranks of Hard to begin with. I've flew through too many games previously on normal without fear of death or inability to defeat a monster. Depending on how the play through goes I'll graduate onto Nightmare or play a few more rounds on Hard with different classes/origins to figure which is best for the "plunge".

So does it have the option of switching difficulties in the middle, or do you have to start a new playthrough?

You can switch at any time.

I wouldn't suggest nightmare since they have stated that it's near impossible but they decided to just throw that mode in for fun. By default this game is difficult even on normal difficulty and you would know this if you watched the wardens quest tournament, although they did rush the content.
Even experienced BG players will probably find normal somewhat challenging.

Yet another thread that thinks nightmare isn't aptly named...
Here's a quote from Chris Priestly on the nightmare threads in the old forums:
"
Quote: You will fail. Without understanding the way combat, items,
spells and such works, you will die repeatedly to the point where it is
not fun, just incredibly frustrating.
Nightmare is there to
provide a challenge to experienced players. Even experienced players
will frequently die because we are deliberately making Nightmare very
very hard. To attempt it as your initial experience is, imo, stupid as
it decreases the overall game enjoyment.
People who want to
learn to run don't start off entering marathons on their first day,
they learn how to run, then once they are comfortable in their skill
and abilities, they challenge themselves. I strongly suggest you start
on some other setting and work your way up to Nightmare.
"
There's another one that I can't find right now in which he comments that even now, after playing every encounter in the game a number of times and knowing exactly what to expect and how to deal with it, he dies fairly often in nightmare.
In other words, starting on Nightmare is a terrible idea, but go ahead if you really want to. And good luck to you all.

To me challenge and fun from (tactical) combat revolves around AI and options available to "outsmart" it.
If Nightmare, in comparison to Hard, offers (only) additional resistances, thus limiting options in (some of key encounters?) and/or rendering certain options useless, the question is: what does Nightmare actually offer?
I can see why some like the challenge, however, there are other ways how to be(come) hardcore. Go for it! then come to tell how it went
