Edited by request from Dominus, and with help and editing by dominus as Co-OP to stir up less trouble.

Although anime is a rather easy target for the nay-sayers and ne'er do wells, there are seemingly other televised genres of media that seem to be rarely accused of the same unjust criticism and double standards. Reality TV, Sports shows, and Sitcoms.

Reality TV, ironically enough, has little to no reality to the shows. Often heavily scripted and preplanned such as was found to be the case with Survivor. However, it maintains popularity for the overall dramatic content.

Situational Comedies(Or Sitcom) is a clear example. A canned audience can be a complete turn-off to what would otherwise be an acceptable piece of work. Some of them have their moments, but even those that aren't, if grown in popularity, become seemingly untouchable, meanwhile a show worth viewing can be removed out of the picture. Though there are plenty of examples outside of Sitcoms(Firefly), This particular genre is a vicious culprit.

What of sports "fans" who literally strip down to their pants in outdoor arena in freezing weather, painting themselves up like a giant flag, or sports logo, but that's considered acceptable as a form of fandom.

There are far too many issues with these genres to simply cast aside, and therefore justifies the existence and relevance of this topic, a distinct problem that allows for discussion. What do you think, readers? Are these issues an exaggeration, or is there something inherently problematic with these 3 televised genres?

Let me know with some comments below.

Yes, I do dislike them. Don't watch sport matches, unless I be with my cousins or my father watches them, even though I like Sport in general!

And Reality Shows ... What are they? Never seen them before!

Wow, this is a tl;dr even by my standards and that's saying something. Of course the overarching message isn't lost on me -- that claiming an entire genre/medium has nothing to offer based on a few shallow experiences/examples is silly.

Still haters gonna hate and if the irony of claiming that Anime, Manga, etc is "Childish, looks unrealistic and is over the top" on a video game forum isn't apparent to them, then why bother arguing the point? It's all personal preference anyway. Some people don't like anime and won't get into it, regardless of it's merits. No point trying to change their minds IMO.

But I don't think you'll get much argument about the suckage of Reality TV.

:D

Now, you should've said "Does anyone else dislike Romance Stories?" and ranted about that.

That would've been epic.

:D

Oh if I did that the forum would be in shut down, also it is wise to just skip to the end, the top part is mainly ment to intice a few, and prove my final point.

I can't stand about 99% of what comes on TV these days - and the things I do like damn sure aren't sitcoms, reality TV, or sports shows. It seems to be common practice by the media that when something is popular, copy the hell out of it and bombard the general public with a thousand clones of it.

Not to mention that a considerable portion of TV time is taken up by inane commercials that make me NOT want to buy the product advertised out of sheer spite.

Hard to believe people pay $60 a month to put up with this crap (and that's just for the "basic" package - if you want good channels that you'll actually watch, get ready to shake out your piggy bank).

Good thing most of the good stuff comes out on DVD sooner or later. I can bypass all of that crap and go straight for the things that are actually worth my time and money.

We shake the piggy bank every month. Posted Image If I could get a package with just the Food Network, AMC, Bravo, Current, and maybe the Travel Channel, I'd be happy.

As far as sitcoms go, some are good, some are ok, and some are really really bad.

I only watch one kind of reality tv, singing competitions. Other than that I think reality TV is this worst thing to happen in the history of mankind and it's all my fault. I jinxed us when I said there is nothing worse than game show tv, the next day reality tv became the thing.

If they had a package that let you pay per channle, I think most of the cable and sat companies would go under.

They'd just charge a whole lot per individual channel.

I don't watch a lot of TV, I usually read or I go on the computer. Sports I'd rather get in the ring and do Kickboxing myself, although I do like to watch the 6 nations rugby when it's on. Reality TV I never watch it, Big Brother I would have hoped that someone would drive a stake through its heart, because it keeps being ressurected, by the bloody TV corporations. Sitcoms, I don't follow what's going on with them... so I'm lost whenever I watch them.

I usually watch things like proper history documentaries, BBC's "Life" nature documentaries, Financial Times news etc. Yep I'm that interesting.

If all I had to pay for were AMC, FX, HBO, and Showtime, and could skip everything else, I'd be good to go - every other channel on TV can ****** off.

What is this TV you speak of? O_o

Seriously, I don't watch TV shows or programs anymore. If I do, it's on netflix and when I have the time.

I don't watch TV that much anymore, if it is not to play games, my TV is used to watch Law and Order SVU, or some DVDs I have around my dorm room.

Although the paragraphs seem to go in too many directions at once, the question itself I can answer: I don't really watch TV anymore outside of family get togethers. It's cheaper to just have internet access, and a TV series that's favorable or acclaimed will typically end up on DVD anyways, which is a steal at rental places.

For the shows that I've briefly watched in the past... Sitcoms were alright back in my younger years, but I've grown a distaste for them. Reality shows are iffy - There are some I had a fondness for, but most are just another batch of "Crazy Crap Happens to a Naive Youth" episodes. I don't watch sports (TV/IRL), or care for them. I've been dragged to football games with my sister before, and it feels like watching paint dry as the rest of my family goes nuts over a touchdown. It lacks any meaning to me.

I would suggest re-editing the OP so it isn't banished to the netherworld. Re-naming the topic to be less like the one that inspired it would also be a good idea.
here. Thank you."

I dislike watching sports, but occasionally I'll watch boxing. Reality TV is horrible, I've never found a good one. Some sitcoms are okay, but I usually don't watch them.

Bummer.  Do they not explain the different techniques or plays to you?  If someone's really knowledgable about a sport, it can be fun to watch a good team or athlete.

Husband and I started planning which nights we visit certain family members based on what we know they'll be watching.  Actually, I take that back; I started planning which nights.  Husband would disappear into a bedroom after supper with some 18th-century philosophy tome leaving me to visit with HIS family while they did a running commentary on Two and a Half Men and Glee re-runs.  :pinched:

Ahem.  No resentment here or anything.  :P

I never really got a full detailed explanation on it all. Trying a few madden games gave me a vague idea of what's going on, I think it's just not my kind of game. Boxing, on the other hand, I grew a taste for after trying Fight Night Champion. It's a bit more intimate and one-on-one than football. I might be tempted then to watch a boxing match. Everything else just doesn't hold the same appeal to me.

@ Dominus shortend it up a bit, took out the less likely to start trouble bits. But if you can...civilize or refine it a bit more than me feel free and I'll co-op it into the main topic. With credit given of course.
