I think I'll reserve judgement until reviews (or at least mechanics are defined). This seems like one of those projects that could go either way. Still trying to figure out what made them want to do this...

Hey, you gotta pay the rent. :P They can't all be traditional RPGs or action hybrids.

So Chris and company are making this instead of, say, another RPG in the Planescape setting?

Though I care little for recent South Park, the overall is ingenious in a love it or hate it way. Earlier episodes are with attitude and sense of style(lessness) that cannot be matched by any teleseries. And as I did love some South Park games back in my youth, this whole game thing sure sounds interesting.

A RPG that doesn't water down its aspects but rather doesn't take itself seriously from the start-go, and trolls all the over-emotional fankids deserves my money...

mrcrusty for the win!

These whole operation smells so much of money grab. I mean, I'm not a fan of the IP so I would probably skip it anyway. But I don't see any reason why it could work well. It does not seem like a spontaneous partnership and we are not talking of Star Wars here...

Then, if I'm wrong I will try it off course. I have much biase against Alpha Protocol and it turned to be one of the most interesting and innovative RPG of the last years with all his flaws.

Wow. The people over at RPGCodex must be having a fit right now.

The level of butthurt at the kkkodex has reached maximum levels. One of the few reason why these RPG deserved to exist :D.

If it is to work, one side will have to have more control.
At this point, it seems to be South Park's Matt and Trey, in which case
I'm wondering why even bother employing Obsidian?

They needed some bugs so the game could feel more indie (even as an artistic form of social commentary against AAA games fixation with polish).

I don't mean to derail the thread, but is Alpha Protocol better on the PC then console?

As far as i'm aware. Obsidian are also working with another company on a Wheel of Time game.. Though that's fairly old news and i've heard nothing about it for a while.

Then again i don't go looking for information on specifics companies, merely games that pop up that appear to be the least bit interesting.

PC with an Xbox controller or consolles. Some minigames are a pain in the arse with the mouse (imho) and the game was builded with consolles in mind.

You know though, the South Park setting might be an excuse to test the waters for more traditional RPG elements. It really does work if you disassociate the game with it's gameplay elements and focus on the branding instead.

For example, many Sports games, despite being "dumbed down casual swill" have character creation and character building more complex than many fully fledged RPGs these days. I'd like to see an RPG released today with like 20+ stats or attributes. Reactive narrative? They have that too, moreso than you'd think. No two seasons are ever, EVAR the same.

So it might just be possible, just a little, that we'd get a game with meaningful RPG elements and a ****load of satire about RPGs, RPG tropes and the industry at large.

Sure it won't be no Planescape or hold any "depth" per se, but who cares? If it's a good RPG that rags on other RPGs I'd be happy to buy it.

Of course, it could all be a phoned in piece of crap and that's the likely outcome, but there's massive potential there.

So much for Obsidian's hallowed reputation. This is just them cashing in on cheap brand name recognition.

To be fair working with huge licenses like star wars or ad&d could both be seen as equal cash ins, what they actually bring to the table will be interesting to see. If they can squeeze a good rpg out of South Park then i'll have to hand it to them, this is assuming they're doing anything more than bringing to life the original creators vision and can add some of their own hocus pocus.

I'm kind of mixed on this. I know Obsidian can make games revolutionary, and they aren't scared to push the limit. Hell, they actually made, from what I hear, the Star Wars setting interesting with some grey areas. I just don't feel that a South Park RPG is really something that I want. They go from Fallout: New Vegas which is probably the greatest RPG I've played since Planescape: Torment to this. I just hope that its a side project and Chris Avellone is working on "The Wheel of Time" game which sounds more appealing. If anything, they were supposed to be working on a flash game, and I hope this South Park game is that.

From what I was reading in the article, it looks like Trey and Matt are overseeing the entire project. If they are pouring a ton of money into this game, they can probably make a really good one. I know Obsidian isn't scared of trying something new. When I saw the picture of the boys in the Lord of the Rings outfit, I started to kind of look forward to the game. I mean they could make a pretty cool character creator. The more I actually think about this game, the more I'm starting to like it Image IPB.
