This thread has been inspired by this one http://social.biowar...57250/4#8760184 since NANOWRIMO is over that one will become obsolete but...

I really enjoyed meeting other writers and I see a need for a thread to hang out and discuss Writer Topics and to have a place each Friday to post our weekly updates - the Friday can be seen as like a Weekly Prompt Challenge to get busy writing each week.

So ok I know this happens a little in FanFiction Sucks thread but I dont like that heading, coz it doesnt always LOL

A lot of us hang out in our respective "Fan" threads which may be enough - so I guess we will see.

GUIDELINES

1. No spamming links - just one post per week of all your updates with some kind of Prompt banner (have to find one)
2. Keep on topic - Writer stuff or Fan Creation discussions.

Lets see if this is truly warranted Posted Image

/cheers

FRONT PAGE STUFF FOR FINDING STUFF REAL GOOD!  (why, no, I've never seen Zoolander, stop asking)

RULES ETC:

ARTICLE DISCUSSION:

Please, please, please PM links to articles to be used in future discussions!  I will update the 'front page' post on Sunday weekly with a new article, but I'd love for the suggestions to come from the community here rather than Uncle Google.  All articles will be posted here for a week and then put into a blog for archival purposes (blog URL TBD)

CONCRIT STORY OF THE WEEK:

For those of you looking for concrit, I've decided that the system suggested by Corker and seconded by others will be the way to go.  I will maintain a list of authors interested in having their work concrittered and work through them each week.  Each Sunday, I will pick someone from the list of authors who send me their names (probably using dice or RNG) and PM/contact them and ask if they would like to 'play' (i.e., have their story posted the following week) or 'pass' (give the opportunity on to someone else).  If I do not hear from them by mid-week (Tues/Wed), then I will pick another name and contact them.  Whoever 'plays' is removed from the 'active list' and put onto the 'pending list' until all names on the 'active list' have been used, then the 'pending list' will become the new 'active list'.  Anyone who 'passes' will remain on the 'active list'.

To keep it fair, if someone on the 'active list' doesn't respond after three attempts, they will be removed from all lists and will need to resubmit their name to be included again.

TO BE PUT ON THE LIST: please PM me your BSN name and contact info, if an email is preferred over BSN PMs.

Current article under discussion:
Limyaael's Felt like being declamatory again - link provided by Corker - thanks, Corker!

List of previously discussed articles can be found here.

Current sacrificial lamb concritter:
Muirin's Bittersweet, Chapter 1-3 - An editable Google Doc has been created for comments here.

List of previous concritters can be found here.

I have a question for fellow writers: Maric with Flemeth: Did he or didn't he?

If it was DA2 Flemeth? Hells to the yes.

(Sorry. I haven't read the books, just online summaries and whatnot. Just about everything I've seen makes me less and less impressed with the blood of Calenhad.)

Don't think they did it. I think Flemeth more like showed him some vision or used some blood magic on him to take his blood for some reason or other.

At least, I HOPE he didn't.

She showed or told him he would be betrayed by Loghain, more than once. Aside from that, who knows. LOL! I often find myself wondering if perhaps she had told him the future of his children. The one being betrayed by Loghain and the other... whatever happens to Alistair in your playthrough. Maybe even showed him the fate of Ferelden after he was gone. Maric making the decision to go with the Wardens to show them the way could have been inspired based on some of the knowledge he was given by Flemeth in the past. What about his disappearance or alledged death at sea? Did he have foreknowledge of that. Heh, I always wonder if he really died or not, but that's just me. :)

And I won't be participating because of the one post a week restriction. I'll stick with updating my own personal threads and chatting on the DAO and DAII fanfiction support threads. :) Take care all.

Why the one "advertising" post per week? I don't write on a schedule and if I have an update ready to go but I've already posted one, I have to wait till next week to say something?

And I have no banners except for my ME stuff. Which I can't pimp here.

There is this group: http://social.biowar...oup/2927/#group which has been slowly dying in the gap between games if anyone's interested in reviving it.

I think we wanted to try to recreate a bit of the NaNoWriMo continuity, in the sense that to write, you have to, well, write. and write often. Similar in a sense to the prompts in the character-specific threads, but without the limitation of a character or theme.

I believe we are looking to just post at least once a week (maybe not necessarily on Friday only, just so long as they post at least one thing a week) as a way to keep themselves accountable not only to themselves but others. The banner is just cuz we iz jealous of the sweet ZevThread and Alistair banners, yo?

Also, this would be a good place to talk about writing in general, post links to writing tips and other items of note...

As Sialater pointed out, this may have been covered in a group, but I didn't know that group and (to be honest) not everyone who comes to the boards looks into groups for stuff like this, but they may see this thread and wish to participate.

Am I making sense here?

*la la la l-- Ooo, shiny!*

To post once per week is... limiting? Meaning you normally post a new story several times in one week? Wow. And... wow.  You guys are awesome. For me, once per week is a challenge.

My day will be Monday... though I'm pretty sure I'll be late half of the time.

Well, some weeks I don't write fic at all. I work on my 6 (yes, SIX) original novels in progress. (The plot bunnies are killing me. Just got a new idea yesterday. *headdesk*)

So, I guess those weeks, I just don't post?

@ Sialater - Exactly. Some people will write something Dragon Age every week (you know, those of us with *no life* *headdesk*), while others write Dragon Age as part of their general mixture of writing (such as yourself). Instead of posting Dragon Age fic, maybe you could read other people's posts and comment on them, or discuss the art of writing in general, or mention something else salient to whatever discussion is going on at the time, or post a link to an article about writing that you happened to read recently, or what not.

This is a place for writers to post stuff, commiserate, and try to encourage each other to keep going even if the plot bunnies seem to starve once in a while. Participation is key, not the specific nature of the participation.

Also, six novels??? That's a hella lot of writing and *shudder* revisioning. Good luck with all that! I salute you!

Some are in the world building stage. But yeah... #6 hit me yesterday. My one completed is in a friend's hands who promises to bleed on it in comments. My second most completed one I stalled just before the final fight because in hindsight it sounds like it sucks. I've started the sequel to the completed one and have an outline ready for it. Just don't really want to get into it yet until I get the first one back.

Everything else is slowly advancing through the world building stages, waiting for one to grab my attention. So far, nothing's made it past the Inner Troll Chorus of "YOU SUCKS!" to grab my attention completely (probably because of that stalled final fight). Hence the fic writing.

The one post per week was more to do with spamming - Im more guilty of that I think >_< I guess it doesnt matter.

- and I was trying to re-create the NANOWRIMO deadline thing of posting at least one thing per week like the prompt - to try and work the self discipline aspect of forcing oneself to sit and write something, even if it sux LOL

Really it doesnt matter overall - Im glad to see ppl interested.

I am hoping to glean much from your writer brains.

@ Tryynity - Sorry, I kinda hijacked the thread a bit.  But the idea of this thread has been percolating in my head, and I'm really excited about the potential.

I'd like to present some suggested guidelines for this thread, if ya'll will work with me here and make changes as recommended:

We are here because we all have two loves, writing and Dragon Age.  To that end, we need a place to talk, vent, commiserate, kvetch, and generally get into where those two things interact.  To an extent, Fanfiction Sucks can provide that, but I would like a wee bit more, and was wondering about all of your thoughts on the following:

1) No more than one post a week with links to new stuff you've written (to keep down the post spammin', as Tryynity suggested).

2) At least one additional post a week to 'participate' - whether this is a thought on writing in general, or a description of a problem you are encountering in your own writing, or a request for input (like Corker asking our opinion on portable flamethrower, that kind of thing).  I understand that not everybody will be able to do this all the time due to RL or the Internetz going down or whatever, but I would like to propose this so that we feel an ongoing sense of community

3) Occasional Writing Challenges: rather than challenges based around themes, we could have challenges based solely around writing itself.  For example, a story without using 'said', or without using 'said adverbly', or a story told in present tense, or a story in second person perspective, or a drabble (i.e., exactly 100 words), or a poem.  That way we could occasionally go outside our comfort zones without having to invest too much time into it, and we could get helpful feedback along the way.

4) Sharing knowledge of writing - this happened in Fanfiction Sucks, but it was an occasional thing.  We could share tidbits we find online, take one article and label it 'discuss', and generally pick it apart and learn from it as a group.

5) Feedback - set up a roster of people who will read the stories and post quick comments on them, what worked and what didn't work.  This way, people who don't have time to write, or are concentrating on writing other things, have the opportunity to participate in the thread.  Not to the level of beta reading, just some quick comments, like 'the 3 things that stood out the most in this piece were..." kind of thing.

Thoughts on the above?  I love the idea of a place where we can all gather as writers that is easy to find (which, unfortunately, groups on BSN generally are not easy to find).  I know that stuff like this exists outside of BSN, but it would be kinda cool to have it in BSN too.

Or am I being, like, waaaay presumptuous here?  Sometimes I feel like such a noobie here, since I've only been here a couple of months... Plus I tend to leap before I look...

So slap me if I went too far... Posted Image

Whatever is fine - this thread is about what the writing community of BSN DragonAge want/need - we are spread out in our particular fan-threads and its nice to meet somewhere common.

During the Writing Challenge I happened to discover some interesting FanFic stories simply because I committed myself to reading everybodies and part of that commitment is to review all of them at every post.

We need to be careful with Concrit - I myself thrive on it - I like to know how I am received as long as it is combined with a HOW. I do not like criticism that says "well that just sux" if they add why and how you can fix it then I can judge if I need to listen or not.

Yes post lots of articles that you find useful.

This is not my thread - this is everyones so - feel free to say/add what you like.

Call me in. I'm not sure as far the writing/posting once per week will go, because I started a new job and it is really, reaaally stressful and time-consuming atm, but I'll do my best. But I wager I'll kinda need writing to stay sane while handling twenty kids every day. Lol.

Well...let's see ;) As for discussing writing itself, I also hang out in this forum a lot. It is really helpful.

IMO, BSN's groups have a severe usability issue. There's no quick way to get from the first page of a discussion to the last page. So discussions either need to be very short, or you end up clicking a dozen times to get to the end of a thread.

Which is a shame, because they'd otherwise be wonderful tools for what I'd call 'working groups' (but which could also come across as 'cliques') to establish themselves in.

So, to start: I just found an amazing site, I really don't know how I could ignore its existance this long: Talking Writing .

I was almost relieved to read My Slow Prose Manifesto - honeslty, I was starting to think that there's something wrong with me, if I can't force myself to write thousands of words without regard to the quality, to turn off my inner editor and 'just write'. Or to write 'shi.tty drafts', as the author of the essay calls it. I tried, but I can't. I write slowly. Sometimes I'm stuck on one word for hours, because that one word, especially in a dialogue line, matters to me very much.

'Just write something and move on' - I get that advice very often and every time I have to think how stupid it is. It's like telling to a woman choosing what to put on for a party where she wants to impress the guy she is obsessed with for last few months. <_<

I'm not writing for myself. I'm writing for my readers, and I want them to like it. And as I'm perfectionist (stupid advice no. 2: don't be! :pinched:)  for me it means that I must really like what I wrote. I must enjoy writing it and reading it. And I can't enjoy it if I know that the word in the third line of the second paragraph is just some cheap replacement, that doesn't really tell what I wanted it to tell. So what if the readers don't know it. I do. I know I cheated. I hate cheating.

I don't want to write 'more and faster'.  I want to write better. I admire those who can write fast and well. Unfortunatelly,
it doesn't work like that for me.

Right. Enough ranting and surfing. Back to my slow new chapter. Hopefully it will be finished soon... by the end of the next week, that is. :)

Klidi, I'm exactly like that too. I can fret about a word or sentence for hours and get nothing done. Hence I'm very slow but thorough with my writing, because I want the best possible outcome in wording text and dialogue for me and my readers. On some days I find it very very frustrating that I'm not faster and need a week or more to write a chapter, but on the other side this slow method makes sure that I have no qualms with the chapter and are satisfied with it in the end. And this is what matters, no? ;)

Okay it doesn't keep me from cringing at the older chapter when re-reading them, but that is another story :P
