re: titles

I am horrible at that. Sometimes I just take part of a quote from my story and make that my title. Other times I just used generic stuff like Maria13 likes. Since I'm so horrible at coming up with titles, I never title my chapters either, haha.

On titles:
I grab what I think is the central theme of the story, or something simple that's a character for me (I like one-word titles if possible - e.g, Anders: "Freedom", "Running"). If I'm really stuck, the odd song title/line.

Because I am actually a huge mutant mynah bird, most of my titles are allusions to *something.* Cliches or figures of speech (By the Book, Sore Losers), catchphrases (She's Just Not That Into You), TV shows (Are You Being Served?), song lyrics (Shot Through the Heart), book titles (Even Cowgirls Get the Blues, The Short Happy Life of Kirkwall's Seneschal). Basically my brain takes the story's themes and ideas, cross-references it with whatever literary or pop culture garbage is floating around my head, and spits out something it thinks is relevant. "The Search for the Dragon's Claw" was picked because it sounded like a Doc Savage novella or an Indiana Jones movie (the story is pulp-inspired).

Every so often I get poetic (Bone Splinters), literal (Three Deaths in Kirkwall) or very terse (Shiver). "Dragon Age: Elvhenan" was picked because it points a big arrow at what makes that story an AU.

I'm possibly least happy with "Wild Blood," because that just sounds so awful. Like, Crystal Mystic Unicorn kinds of awful. But it does kind of work, thematically and literally, with that story, so I leave it.

I always try to make the title related to the story/chapter but less directly. I use a line of a song, idiom or allusion... the titles of my stories often have more than one meaning. Sometimes, the title was the first thing I come up with and the story then reflected it in a way; in other cases I spent hours searching for the title I really liked.

The title I'm most proud of is Failed to Fail :)

TK, I, too, have trouble coming up with titles I'm happy with. For my current story, the working title is Sarima's Story... hopefully, that will go away at some point.

My titles are often a word that describes the theme.

Zevran's Symphony - inspired by the poem and the fact that Zevran's story is many stories. I also planned to do 4 parts.

Each part then found a name to suit the them and often a song -
- Erase - Zevran erasing his past from his soul. (Erase Myself - Linkin Park)
- Blackbird Fly - when he is finally free of his past. (Beatles Song - Blackbird lyrics made me think of him).

Part 1 & Part 3 have yet to find titles or songs.

My Asunder fiction - is called Alluvial Solace - Sedimentary Comfort or comfort found in the layers of experiences after a lot of work.

Book of Gwynyyth - from Lotro was because the game is written in books - the story is in 1st person and that is her story. I was sort of being cheeky with the fact that Tolkien has other books unpublished.

Hmmm I have a difficult time with titles as well. Usually I'll try to make it have something to do with the "theme" of the story itself - so A Memory of Time has quite a bit to do with the past, and the way the characters think of it (and how their opinions of the past change). Probably the best title I've ever managed to come up with, even if I think it sounds a bit corny. Oh well, it's a done deal now lol.

On a related note, I'm positively dreadful at coming up with summaries for stories. grrrr.

Is it too soon to be asking for suggestions for another Writers Prompt?

Or is this time of year too crazy for people?

... and do we want judging this time?  with a prize awarded.

A new prompt is okay for me, but I would like to do it without pressure and just for fun. So I don't need a judging/ prize imo.

Re: Titles. My "Of Elves and Humans" is basically a bland result of thesummary what this story is about. Lenya, a Dalish elf dealing with all things human and a human specially; Alistair. I'm not really fond of this title and find it very blah, but it stuck somehow with me through all this time. And now the story is far too known under this name to change it. (Would love to name it "Two worlds" or something like that, but whatever.)

As for chapter title, I love to take the centered theme of the chapter and name it...eh voila...title. An example is the current chapter of mine, which I even renamed because "Damaged goods" fits better, when Lenya/ Alistair are talking about their painful past/mistakes. The current one I write on, has the name "Misery loves company" so don't expect it to be a happy one. Heh. Also the music I hear has a great influence on that/ the mood too. I have many song titles of "Poets of the Fall" in there, because it is simply so fitting to the story. Then again, I love such fancy stuff like (hidden or obvious) symbolism and themes, so my titles mostly reflect that.

I'm pleased to announce that I think I've finally settled on a title for my blight fic that I'm happy with (at least it's better than Sarima's StoryImage IPB): Promises Broken, Promises Kept

Now to start actually assembling some of the bits I've written into a cohesive whole...

Titles are kind of an after thought for me I have to confess. I usually write the story or outline it and then derive a title later.

For the prompt I am game, bit I am like Meri doing them for sh!ts and giggles. To take a quote from the movie Cannonball Run...Just for the hell of it...just for the fun and laughter. ;)

Okay Im good with a juz 4 fun prompt also.

Someone want to suggest something - maybe you people who went to university and remember a fun exercise you had to do - share that. Keep in mind though not all here have gone to Uni/College  and some are not even writing in their first language.

Haha. Engineering (and medieval studies) major here. I think the most fun exercise we had was the time they gave us a box of paperclips, four rubber bands, some pencils and I think some string and told us to build something.

So maybe in the spirit of that...

Write something that includes:

wine, an old woman, snow, a magical ring, and a backpack.

Aha! I've finally worked out the secrets of picture insertion. ^

Anyway, excellent prompt! Well, I answered it, but it got a little long (it appears that "small prompt" is received my brain as "Wynne's untold story, and throw in your Warden too"... *sigh*) to post in its entirety without clogging up the page, so I had to link this one.

Sweetheart
Wine, old woman, snow, ring, backpack... all present. I just hope they're not too shoddily stitched together. :D

Purely by coincidence, thenext chapter of my ongoing story might well include all those elements, if you give some latitude on the "old" woman.  Forty is getting on in years for a Warden, though.  Well, I probably wouldn't have put a magic ring into it, but I'm sure Alistair's got one or two around, so it would be easy to fit.

I am loving FanFiction.net - being able to read stats on stories - and having a tally of how many subscribers you have is such an awesome tool.

I am wondering if there are any other sites out there that provide this kind of service or better, that people use for their writing.

Yeah it is quite nice for that. I started noticing that many would read my first chapter but not go on to my next one so it made me take another look at my first chapter and redo it. It's feedback, even if it isn't a review.

I was also worried about that - I usually get almost the same hits/visitors for the first chapter as for the last one, then the number slowly decrease, drop almost to the zero for the chapters 7 - 10 (which means in the middle) and then they increase rapidly again for the last few.
At first I wondered who is reading a new story like that - starts at the beginning, skips the middle and proceeds right to the end.
Then I was explained that, if one person starts to read the story and they continue without shutting off their internet connection and/or their pc, their hits don't register for the new chapters. Only if they stop reading and then start again.
So if you have a sudden decrease of readers after the first chapter it doesn't necessarily mean that it was poor - it can also mean they keep reading. :)

But... but... then what's the difference between Hits and Visits? I thought hits were additional pageviews from the same visitor/IP.

I found this attempt to answer the above:

Visitors are the number of unique viewers that have read you story while hits are the number of times a link to your story has been clicked on. The same viewer can visit your story several times and only increase the number of hits. Also, if your story is a multi-chapter, the numbers of visitors won't change if someone click to see the next (or any other) chapter , but your number of hits will go up.

That is my understanding also - although some sites misrepresent the terminology.

I am used to using Google Analytics for our site.

The best indicator of people leaving is bounce rate which can indicate your site brings the visitors and then doesnt deliver - ff.net does not show this - perhaps it is possible to set up a google analytics for your own url - I have never tried.

Not sure about the ppl leaving mid-read though.

People that stay to read should then convert to hits - people get confused with: Unique visitors, visits, Hits, Page Views, click thrus...

Hmmm, never considered using Google Analytics for FF.net.  I've noticed a significant drop in my Star Trek book on the FF.net stats, heh.  Always just assumed I got too wordy and *verbiage* around the part the numbers drop off.  =]
