I made a google doc of Mahati's Tranquil Whispers that we are critting this week if anyone else would like to use it to crit and add their thoughts to what I've got (or disagree with what I have). Anyway, feel free to use it to crit his/her (? - sorry!) work if you want to! Same deal as with Tryynity's story I posted earlier!

Popping in from the Asunder thread! I'm just finishing one major section of my main fic, so I'll try and do some reading before starting in on the next (and next to last!) act of my DA:O story!

Edit: If anyone reads my main fic, I'm dead serious about the A/N in chapter 45, A Paragon of Her Kind. If you can figure out how I made it from the song "99 Red Balloons" to how I ended that chapter, before anyone else does, I will write any DA prompt you put before me.

...That said, I seriously doubt I'm going to have to follow up on this promise. My mind works in very obscure ways, lol.

Then there's the Terry Pratchett approach: don't have chapters at all.  And then write really, really well.  And then make the reader blearily look at their clock at 2AM and wonder why they didn't stop reading earlier.

Unfortunately, as amazing as Pratchett is, he does get a bit on the over descriptive side of things. Most of the time it fits the randomness of the Discworld perfectly, but in Hogfather, at least, it got a bit distracting.

I wanted to ask, I'm finding it really hard to start writing again (I finished a very long story a month ago). I seem to lack motivation at the moment. What are some things people do to get started again? I have the ideas... just no will to start.

Oh yeah, if someone's got an answer to that one... I really want to know.

Apparently Colette's husband used to shut her in her room until she produced the required amount of words.:o

Oh no! lol. Somebody locking me in my room and forcing me to write would probably do the opposite. I'd just sit there and stare out the window, planning my escape lol.

The Sarendoctrinator wrote...

I have the same problem, and I think that in my case, a lot of it comes from feeling like "I have to get this finished as fast as I can" instead of "I want to work on this now." Ideas come naturally to me. It's deadlines that can take the fun out of writing for me. (I don't have an official deadline. It's just, as I said, finish it much faster than I have been.)

I got some advice here to try sticking with a schedule, force myself to write, and eventually, it would start to come easier. It was working great, but then I had one day where I wasn't feeling well and, no matter how long I tried to come up with something, it was never going to happen. You know, one of those days where trying to concentrate at all was just starting to get frustrating. xD Sometimes, it just helps to know that other writers are going through the same thing.

I forced myself to finish my last story before the new year, and it worked, though I wasn't completely satisfied with the ending. Now I realized I could have done so much more. Oh well, what can I say? Sometimes forcing myself works, but now it's not working. I shouldn't have to force myself to do something fun! lol. I am getting ideas down, just haven't been able to actually put them together. I think my problem is that I don't have much to do these days, which you think would mean I would be writing like crazy since I have all the time in the world... but blah, it's like I'm just out of it or I don't know.

A break can be good.  I gave myself permission not to update anything during the December holidays and it was lovely.

After I finish a long work (which for me is 20-30K; I know that's peanuts for some of y'all) sometimes I like to do a bunch of short, light prompts.  It helps air out some of the ideas that have been on hold because of the big story, doesn't feel so Very Terribly Important, and is just messing around for fun.  Also, I get a sense of accomplishment and completion (and hopefully reviews!) after just a few nights of work instead of months.

Once I get that out of my system, I'm ready to head on to the next novella.  Assuming I don't get stuck on the second chapter for four months. >.<

@thesnowtigress: I think a break can be good as well. Don't get frustrated, though xD I take a break too, once in a while. Helps me relax, and focus. Usually, the motivation to write just comes back then.

Maybe I should just take a break. I'm the same as you Corker, my "long" fics are only around 30,000 words on average, though my last one was a monster (in my world - I know some people have twice as much as that hehe) at 80,000 plus. Maybe I am just deflated after writing that many words, which was an amazement to me, seeing as it was all original. I wonder if I can ever write something like that again.

Anyway, sorry for the wall of text, just wanted to reply to everyone. Thanks for the advice. Posted Image

Thank you for making this, the original was hard on my eyes and I didn't think to just copy and past it somewhere else to make it readable. Posted Image

So, I had a thought: would it be useful for people if, along with announcing the concritter of the week, I also made a Google Doc that everyone could leave comments in for that concritter? This is actually quite easy to do, and that way, all the comments would be in one place...

Any feedback on this would be appreciated!

Hmmm, that could work.

I was also thinking that maybe I could make a special gmail account for the Writer's Lounge and make a Google Doc in there each week for the concritter, and that way they'd all be stored in a central location. I wouldn't mind linking a pre-existing document, mind, just trying to also think of those who haven't yet discovered the marvels of Google Docs.

Also, front page post has been updated!

All my fics go in Google Docs. But the EULA states that Google owns what ever's in them, so be careful with your "professional" stuff.

I figure if Google wants to own my fics, it can take it up with Bioware.

Mmmmaybe?  That sounds implausible to me.  The EULA is here and I think you're talking about Section 11.

Down the bottom of this article there's a quote from Google explaining what the legalese means:

"As we state in our terms of service, we don't claim ownership or
control over your content in Google Docs & Spreadsheets, whether
you're using it as an individual or through Google Apps. Read in its
entirety, the sentence from our terms of service excerpted in the blog
ensures that, for documents you expressly choose to share with others,
we have the proper license to display those documents to the selected
users and format documents properly for different displays. To be clear,
Google will not use your documents beyond the scope that you and you
alone control. Your fantasy football spreadsheets are not going to end
up shared with the world unless you want them to be."

I'm not a lawyer, so maybe they're lying through their teeth, but that *sounds* like what that section could be covering, *and* it doesn't fly in the face of years of intellectual property law.

Ah, good. They must have fixed that on their most recent overhaul. The EULA sounded a lot more questionable the last time I read it.

I do think something like that is good (and very convenient), but at the same time, I don't like the idea of losing public concrit on sites like FF.net. I'll always accept anything given, in any form, but for concrit I was *giving*, I would probably still post reviews or comments at the story's original location so that everyone on whichever site it is can see why they should be reading that story!

I think this is a great idea! I like the thought of having all the crits in one place and in someplace where you can go through line by line on the story and explain what was good or bad. Hmmm, people can still post on public sites reviews for the story itself. I know I plan on still doing that for people on FF.net because I want to, like Brenna said (you have no idea how weird it was to type that :P) make sure people know in a public place that I really like x, y and z story from someone.

I guess maybe I'm distinguishing between reviewing a story (a general this is good and others should read this) and constructive criticism which should, imho (and I could be wrong), go into detail about the whens hows and whys of what someone did right or wrong in their story.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the former (believe me - I live off the reviews that I've gotten for my stories! Always appreciated! ^_^) But I think what we're doing for the stories we're passing between us is more in depth - I assume anyway, right?

Personally, for the latter, I would rather it be on google docs and not in a public forum, that way it's less embarrassing for those getting critted as its not quite so public (and I think would give more freedom to the critters to give more detail about what their thoughts are), and it gives the writer the chance to change things, ask for clarification etc. in a friendly environment.

Also all the reviews are in one place so you don't end up getting 15 crits from people all saying the same thing; it would be nice if we can see what other people have said so that maybe talk about something that other people missed in their crits. I know when Tryynity messaged me back and mentioned that a lot of people had mentioned the same things I did, I immediately thought: oh darn! I wish I'd known that and I would have focused on other things.

Anyway, those are just my thoughts. I'm perfectly fine either way!

The google docs thing works for me and will be added to the list I have called :

"FIND OUT WHAT THE HECK THIS IS!"

... It will be in good company alongside - Kindle, Google Plus :) - hey I baulked at Twitter and now I tweet like a pro... as in professional.

But I will add I do not mind public criticism or discussion of anything I write - so long as it is constructive and helpful.  I dont even mind if people rip it to shreds and point out every flaw.  If I know what the reader is thinking (whoever they are) I can better decide how to communicate with them.

Its not about me impressing readers so much as reaching them and pulling them into my world I made for them, but OMG I love it if I do impress them and they like/luv it .... Posted Image they are my rewards and encouragement to keep on keeping on.
