*sigh* No, they don't. Both of them are proud and stubborn and would rather suffer the death by marmots than do something they don't like. Besides, they are well aware that if I kill them there will be no story, so it's not very likely I'll do it.
I remember when I was writing the chapter about recruiting Shale. My crazy kid didn't trust the merchant that gave him the rod for free and saw no reason to go to that village. He had more urgent matters to attend to, he said.
In the end he only decided to go there because he had a big row with Alistair regarding Jowan. And as he knew Alistair was also against going searching for some golem, he did it in spite, just to prove that HE was the leader, not Alistair.
Anyone else having this problem?

Oh, goodness yeah. I think that's what having a well thought-out character is all about. They do things because this is what they would do, not because it's what the author or even the story wants them to do.
And I can relate - Brenna does not see any reason at all to search for the Urn. It's a complete waste of time she says, because it's highly unlikely that it even exists. I'm still trying to convince her she should do it <_< haven't been successful yet. And the fact that Aedan thinks they should only makes Brenna not want to do it even more <_<
And don't get me started on the dwarves and the anvil..... yeah that's going to be even more difficult.

I doubt the writer is advising that we make our characters act out-of-character just to advance the story. I took it to mean that when I sit down, look at the page and say, "Go!", they have to address the problem at hand, no weaseling out of it or calling in sick or hiding under the benches of the Bar in My Head where they all hang out between stories.
I surely *have* had characters revolt on me. The weirdest one had to be the time Warden Commander Mahariel informed me that obviously she wasn't going to wait for some Orlesian Wardens to attack her, she was going to pre-emptively, murderously ambush the guys. It threw me, because my protags are usually pretty white-hatted about things, and I had planned for there to be a sort of a parley, and both sides teaming up to go fight dragon cultists. Didn't go that way at all... but it did go, which was the important part.

I can second that. So much. And it happens all the frikkin time.
Just now I wrote the scene where Lenya should walk in to the gatekeeper of the werwolve's lair/ sanctum of the Forest lady to talk with them. Or better said to discuss a parley. But what is the silly golem doing? Smashed the door and slaughtered the werewolves in this very room one by one with a giddy "Squiiish." Lenya didn't even had the chance to enter the room (or the werewolves to leave it, for that matter *cough*)
Crazy Shale. That was sooooo not planned.
Lenya was all

I had done the 'best' werewolf/Dalish ending, and I had saved Zathrian, but I had never told the Gatekeeper to go to the Void. I thought my angry!Dalish would be perfect for it.
Oh. My. Gawd. The cutscene is *so* not representative of the number of werewolves that will be in that fight. I freaked, forgot everything I knew about DAO tactics, and stood in the middle of the room and let them come at us. By the time I snapped out of it, I was down to Alistair and Zevran. Then it was just Alistair, versus three werewolves, chugging healing potions every time they came off cooldown and praying that they didn't Overwhelm first.
Eventually, they Overwhelmed first.
Load screen.
Mahariel suddenly thinks the better of a pitched battle. "*grumble grumble* Fine, but talk fast, hairball.")

Abso-frikkin'-lutely. Actually, me murdering my characters is becoming more likely by the chapter. Relationship development is a nightmare with these two, because every time I try to push them forward, they manage some subplot or other that will take another six chapters... *sigh*
Me: No, we will not have another mage-canon chapter.
My Amell: But it's interesting, and you know it'll add to the depth of the against-all-odds relationship...
Me: Whu?
Amell: (starts pointing at computer and clicking things) See, back here you mention it.
Me: I... suppose I do.
Amell: By the way... since I'm a manifestation of your imagination, you've effectively just convinced yourself to write a sub-plot.
Me: Not fair.
Amell (butter-wouldn't-melt grin) Oh, I know.
My head is a very strange place at times.

There is no lore as to whether or not they milk halla, or if halla are truly domesticated or the Dalish really can talk to them as Elora in DA:O claims. The Dalish do seem to make use of whatever's left when halla die, including the horns and hide(! I was surprised at the latter, as skinning one's companions seems rather...urgh. But the Dalish Leather Belt is made of halla hide. However, it's apparently the *only* item specified with that material in the entire game, and found in an ancient tomb, so maybe it's not done any more? Or is it 'waste not, want not' and they eat the dead halla's flesh too?).
I presume the Dalish hunt everything else. There is an account in one of the codices of a Dalish elf challenging a hunter who had slain a hawk, one of the creatures of the Creator Andruil, which suggests they don't go out of their way to hunt certain animals, but I'd say that if they do, they give appropriate offerings or prayers to the appropriate creator. For instance, I can't imagine the Dalish not killing a bear if it posed a danger.
Hawk and hare belong to Andruil. Bear belongs to Dirthamen. If there are others, I'm not sure...

RE: musty tomb, yeah... you figure the elves of Arlathan didn't travel in aravels, they lived in cities. Maybe halla were just a wild animal you hunted back then? (I assume they don't domesticate well, or the rest of Thedas would be having halla stew...)
Ravens also belong to Dirthamen, I think, since he overcame Fear and Deceit.
Edit: Also, I know they refer to the hallas' horns, but they look so antlery to me. (Female reindeer and caribou have antlers, so... maybe female halla do, too?) Then they'd be shed yearly and could be easily collected for crafts.

There's a brief shot of some deer at the start of the dalish origin story which always made me think that's what you were out there hunting before Tamlen found those humans.
That's a good point. I played that origin but don't recall that. I'll have a squiz.
Edit: Oh and this is going to sound *insane* but why does Carver have a Grey Warden sword called Seeker of the Gray? With an A. Typo? http://dragonage.wik...ker_of_the_Gray

re: horns/antlers, I hadn't even considered the possibility of that distinction... One of the compansions mentions the price halla horns fetch, so even though it's not specified I'm *inclined* towards horn since the whole sacred animal = forbidden fruit = expensive luxury art material because it feels like better story stuff.

reminded me of my great desire to write a Dragon Age Musical
It has been suggested (TY Sarendoctor) a Bloodmage induced Bollywood Musical number of someone random of your choosing...
Got a character in game u REALLY hate - now is your chance to make a fool of them
[SO.... who's with me?

That interview reminded me of how much I adore that silly guy. Yelling at other people in the car? Me! Me!
And that's like totally MY prompt. Am I too late? :crying: My internet connection was gone for over a week that's why I couldn't write here. I'm sorry, please spare me!
So, how is everyone doing? Have been reading the last six pages or so.

You know what? I should try this. It's what I do when I write my short dialogues - just throw all of the characters involved into a room with an idea and say, "Go!" Although, it probably makes more sense with dialogues than novel-style writing. The idea of my characters talking about themselves in the third person and putting all of their actions into words with perfect sentence structure is hilarious.Corker wrote...

I imagine them more like this, at least when I'm trying to write - being stuck in the middle of whichever scene I'm working on, not even moving until I figure out how to word it properly. And every now and then, the main character says something like, "This fight is not going well for me! Get to the part where I'm winning!"
@ColorMeSurprised: Definitely post yours! I only wrote mine in my mind.
