But there are no arcane warriors in the tower. ;) It's virtually a lost talent.

In Ferelden at least, that doesn't mean that it's the case in all of Thedas. There is some exchange of talent (mages) between towers in the different countries (is that the right word?) I think it's possible for someone to have learned the talent elsewhere. (An elf initially trained by a keeper might have the skill available to them) A wise mage wouldn't show their hand (arcane warrior) in Ferelden and possibly in Kirkwall. I'm not sure that those books in the First Enchanters studies don't have forbiden knowledge in them. The library is extensive, who can say that there are not stashes of books in closets/basements full of knowledge that the Templars/Chantry deemed too dangerous. This is even mentioned towards the end of the mage origins in regards to the vault, well to be specific it is mentioned that there are dangerous items there. I don't have the exact words off hand. Certainly in Kirkwall there are an abundance of tombs of forbidden magic. :)

In my AU fanfiction my main learned fighting skills before going into the tower and then again upon leaving, it makes sense to me that later down the road when he had access to the arcane warrior knowledge that he would use those skills to make himself an even more capable fighter.

Added:
I mean there is obviously a-lot going on behind the scenes (in secret) even in the Ferelden tower. Our view as a mage in the mage origins is very limited and narrow because of our perceived age and experience, but you could easily show your pc (main character) finding some nugget of information that others didn't find. I think it's very limiting to say that game mechanics and specific storylines are the only way an individual could obtain a certain skill set. I would think that as long as a story shared the how and why of a person obtaining those skills in a different manner than how we received them in the game is acceptable.

Edit: Besides the trainer, who died so long ago he can't even remember, I think you see all of two arcane warriors in the game. One's a dragon cultist in Haven, the other's an elf you can fight in the Proving Arena.

You forgot the most important one, but I'm not telling! haha

The Warden goes without saying -- but s/he doesn't necessarily do the quest.

Dragon Age: Origins said...

Among the ancient elves, there were mages who trained their magical arts to augment their martial prowess. They channeled magical power through their weapons and bodies, becoming terrors on the battlefield. Most consider these skills lost forever, but they may still linger in forgotten corners of the world. Arcane warriors may learn to use their magic score to satisfy the strength requirement to equip higher-level weapons and armor.

Personally, Grey Wardens starting AW classes aside, I'm more of a stickler for keeping to the source material. ;) I know not all fanfic writers feel the same way though. That's coo

Edit: re forbidden magic locked up by the Circle:
Yeeahhh...I have to say that I consider their forbidden magic to involve dealing with demons, spirits and blood magic. Comparing the definitions of Spirit Healer and Arcane Warrior, I can tell you right now which one the Chantry would consider the more dangerous of the two. The only reason Spirit Healers are permitted at all is because they're really useful.l.

And where do we learn the arcane warrior specialization? You can miss your opportunity to learn it based on your playstyle. Well... that aside doesn't one of the merchants sell a book on the specialization? I could be wrong about the arcane warrior being buyable, but I know for a fact other specializations are. *shrugs* My point being that if the specializations can be obtained from a book you buy as well as from where you normally get it, then, IMO, it isn't set as being a singular source type thing. Maybe I'm missing your point totally but that's just the way I think about it. :)

TBH I don't recall if there was an AW tome in Awakening. Spec tomes existed in both DA:O and DA:A, but not for every spec. The Wiki is showing it as unlockable only via that quest in the Brecillian Forest. It seems to be one of the few specs, in fact, which cannot be learned from a book as none are ever found -- at least in the games.

In the end if someone wants to make their character an Arcane Warrior, I'm sure they'll find a way they're happy with. :)

The way I see it, at least for my current character, he learned some fighting skills at the tower. Basically, he just learned that a staff can be used for more than simply channeling magic through. I don't see him as being a true arcane warrior, though, until he finds the phylactary.

I suspect there may be some AWs up Tevinter way. Spellweaver (the AW-restricted blade in Haven) is a dar'missan, an elven blade, and an ancient one. My guess is one of Shartan's boys (or girls) instructed another of Andraste's disciples in the art, then gifted them with the blade to defend the remains of the woman who'd led them to their freedom.

If there were AWs at the start of the Divine Age, one could perhaps justify their existence into the Dragon Age.

It would be interesting to see a arcane warrior later on in the games.

Actually it's really hard to critique a good story - yeah, I had a quick look already. I'll
write something on the doc this weekend.

I will also get onto again shortly and I agree with Muirin, I am finding that I am not seeing anything obvious and so have little to say with most of what I have read to date. Of course I can just say good work etc LOL so I will do that then.

Alright Corker I gave you a crit. Fantastic job! You are such a great writer!

As for the article itself. What did everyone think of it? I thought it was really useful, and I have definitely been using their advice for writing sensory description in my own writing. They say in the podcast that you should err on the side of writing too much description and just chop it later. Did anyone disagree with that at all?

Anyway, I am a big fan of that podcast in general; their writing advice is really useful!

Thanks all for the comments! Seems like I need to reconsider if that flashback is just an author's darling, and Ambra's got me dead to rights on the lack of description. I don't like to write a lot of it, but *some* would probably be good, yes?

I'm afraid I haven't listened to the podcast. I have a weird ~thing~ about podcasts, and even links to YouTube videos. Partly from using university dial-up in the late 90s, partly from often being online at work, partly habit. Which is probably a shame - I'd love to listen to Howard Taylor et al.'s "Writing Excuses" but never seem to be able to get around to that, either. :/

I avoided podcasts until very recently, as well, but I've gotten hooked on "The History of Rome".  At first, my thought was, why listen to a podcast when I could read a transcript of a 30 minute podcast in five minutes--it just seemed like such a waste of time.  But I found that it's a great thing to do while eating dinner or breakfast, and I can browse wikipedia pages related to the material while listening.

Thanks everyone for coming out and crittin' for Corker!  :wizard: :wizard: :wizard:  (hush, little mirror, hush)

Here is the new lineup for article and story:

New article for discussion:
Limyaael's Felt like being declamatory again - link provided by Corker - thanks, Corker!

List of previously discussed articles can be found here.

New sacrificial lamb concritter:
Muirin's Bittersweet, Chapter 1-3 - An editable Google Doc has been created for comments here.

List of previous concritters can be found here.

Also, now that we've had this system in place for a full cycle, anyone have any suggestions for improvements?  Obviously, the life on the thread depends partially on the life in BSN, and ME3 kinda... well, affected it, certainly.  Please post/PM any thoughts regarding this process!

Oooohhh I'm up! Hope folks still have a little energy left for critiquing, and many many thanks to Corker for already doing so! Much appreciated.

Yeah, so...present tense, I absolutely love it, reading it and writing it. I know that not everybody feels the same. To me it somehow gives an intimacy to the writing, any thoughts out there on present tense? Preferences?

I just did a short piece in present tense, myself. I think it has its uses; being intimately and immediately in a character's head is one of them.

I just find being intimately and immediately in a character's head for a long time fatiguing. Possibly it's because it's not a usual technique, so it reads as somewhat artificial to me (in the sense of art and artifice; not necessarily "forced" but the technique calls some attention to itself; it makes a statement by being different from the default). It diverts my attention from the story to the language being used to tell the story, and that messes with me.

Also, I keep looking for when it's going to switch back to past tense. Probably because it gets used in flashbacks a lot, so my brain keeps thinking this is a short section and is going to end any moment now.
