Following the No-Spoiler resource for new players, First Time Playing DAO?, and its companion Things I Wish I'd Known My First Time Playing DAO, I've compiled this list of Forum resources on classes and tactics.

How do I know a given guide is the 'best'? I gained this knowledge at high cost. Not to me, of course, but paid by a noble boy (Conrad? Conway? Conan? cute kid) with no decent outlet for his curiosity.

Really, there are some, like DIscobird's and Ako's, that are so complete and
carefully done that they stand out. They aren't the last word on the
subject, but they're an excellent place to start.

ROGUES
Discobird's DPS Calculations for a DW Rogue and Rogue Mechanics Explained are outstanding.
That's not the whole story for Rogues, but they cover an huge range.

If really interested in alternative builds, like Archery, you can get some information from the Wiki, with sample builds here. See page 4 for an analysis on Dexterity's contribution to Defense over Attack, and read contrary opinions about those recommendations, favoring simple point-and-click over any Talents

It's possible to make an effective archer, especially for specialized runs, like a solo-utility build for Nightmare, but newcomers should know that it's harder to make a rogue shine with Archery than with other specializations.

WARRIORS
see much of the same ground covered by the above, following the Dexterity builds for Dual-Wielding.

To my knowledge, there's no such comprehensive guide for Sword & Board warriors. There are a couple listed in the old Guide to Guides, but they're only fair, perhaps in part because the builds are simple:
Get Bravery and Taunt. Use Precise Striking and Shield Defense early in the game, later keep Shield Wall up. Get all the shield talents, with the Shield Bash line last.

2-H Wielders also lack a comprehensive guide, though there's a good set of 2H Tips. 2H tends to be 'clicky,' requiring active management during a fight, and it; like Archery, can certainly be effective but is a more challenging route. It's a late bloomer, with a lot of misses stacked at the beginning. Use Precise Striking!

MAGES
My Mage's Notebook is primarily a Spell Guide, with little discussion of stats and gear, though it does reveal which robes make you look least like a medieval pimp.

Arcane Warriors get the terrific Ultimate Guide by Ako, plus Tips for Arcane Warriors, while Shapeshifters get, well... sympathy.

That's the standard view, and TBastian makes a strong counterargument in favor of Shapeshfiting. There's also  good guide at Sorcerers.net, and this helpful set of Shapeshifting videos.

Like just about any preference you have in DAO, that line can be made to work through good play, but it's worth cautioning newcomers about the challenges in Shapeshfiting. You need the whole tree for it to be effective, along with a good sense of its function.

SHALE
Increase Str and Con to 38 Con (necessary for some crystals), then your choice.
For Talents, if you want to build her for damage, fill Pulverizing Blows. I don't personally do this, as I prefer other companions for damage, but I appreciate Shale for tanking. And her sunny disposition.
For Tanking, fill the Stoneheart line first.
Rock Mastery is for ranged attack and buffs, while Stone Aura is a general support line.

DOG
Dog gets all available talents, plus well-deserved respect from Sten.
