So mostly not *happy* memories, but any game that can pull that much of a genuine reaction out of me gets a lot of points in my book.

Hear, hear!

I think this "emotional rollercoaster" kind of experience is an extremely important part to a roleplaying game. It's all about finding the right mix of happiness, sorrow, humour, anger and of course epic glory. If you have just one or two of these elements and it's all about themepark-fun ... then you only become jaded and the attachment stops working for you. It is the ups and downs of a story that compel us to stick to it. See also: Game of Thrones.

Alistair suprise-sacrificing himself to save my Warden, whilst I watched dumbfounded and helpless. The D: face the Warden shares with whoever else is in your party (Leliana in my case) was pretty appropriate. I had the exact same bloody expression on at that point. Noooooooo.

Plenty of other favourite moments, not to mention more enjoyable. But it remains by far the most memorable.

[edit] Well, also this.

^_^

Definitely not a happy memory, but my favorite memory was, after working so hard to get Alistair to fall in love with my Warden (I had been a Dalish Warden who started out the game with an attitude that he didn't approve of, but who fell for him and spent the rest of the game trying to win him over, also having to manipulate things so he wouldn't break up with me when he became king), and then hearing Riordan tell me that one of us had to die. I was just, "NO!!!" and sat there stunned for a few minutes.

Best happy memory was running into Denerim with for the final battle with everyone cheering for you and the epic music playing - I loved how the music was timed pretty much perfectly with how long it took to run to the entrance.

I loved Alistair's line "Makers breath, you're beautiful" to my femWarden. Not too far behind that is Anders' line about how falling in love is the rule he will most cherish breaking. Those romances were fairly well written :)

On the less gushy side, I also liked Hespith's rhyme and seeing Petrice get the arrow to the forehead.

It's hard to pick favourite memories because I have so many great ones from Dragon Age, these are absolutely my favourite games, but things that come first in my mind while thinking about them are:

DAO: my first impressions - "I can choose who I'll be! I'm not alone, I can have friends who will travel with me and talk with me! What a funny and engaging game!":) I remember this feeling and thoughts when I think about DAO, and then I have this glorious battle of Ostagar cutscene with it's music ("Ferelden At War"by Inon Zur) in my mind.

DA2: Almost everything about Anders made my favourite memories, how he changed, his story, his behaviour, and romance scenes - especially cutscene with the first kiss:) Anders is a masterpiece in writing, animation and everything in my opinion at least;) then there is Isabela - my second favourite character - I never could have guessed I will like her!!! She turned out to be not that shallow as it seemed at first sight. And her funny comments, relations with Aveline:-) great stuff.

None of them are happy memories, but their helped made the game good.

Da:o Hepisth song. The only part of the Deep Road I enjoyed. Both that rhyme was so deliciously creepy.

Da2: Companion arcs... I really enjoyed my companions devolping over more than one side quest. But the thing that made most impact there was properly Anders suddenly emtionally blackmailing my Hawke on my first playthrough. That hurt, that really hurt... but was at the same time such and realistic reaction.

  • Alistair sacrificing himself as my Warden stood by helplessly, the bittersweet fan in me absolutely loved this scene.
  • Watching the Templar kneel before Hawke, hoping I stopped the mages... only to hear the Circles rebelled and knowing my protagonist failed. Again, bittersweet fan absolutely loved this and enjoyed greatly that my protagonist can fail (though this was a huge theme in DA2).

Bartrand's voice actor during Varric's act 2 quest was perfect during his self-banter. Leaving through the eluvian. Caridin's suicide farewell. Merrill's companion arc on the tragic rivalry path where she shatters her eluvian and grieves for her dead clan. Among others already mentioned.

Hm. I would have to say that I knew I had fallen in love with the series between two points. The first was some random conversation with Alistair early in the game, and had specifically to do with the dialog. DAO has some of the best facial animations / dialog / and voice acting that I had experienced playing games so far (not just Alistair, but the entire cast). The story was interesting and the presentation of the story via the dialog was exceptional. The second was Loghain's speech when the Landsmeet votes against him. That's when DAO solidified itself as one of my all time favorite games.

My favourite moment ever was just before the archdemon fight in DA:O, when all the companions give their farewell speeches to you, and then you run down past all the cheering soldiers. Still gives me goosebumps every time I play it.
The deep roads broodmother poem is a close second; I loved that part. Chilling.

Sadly no such moments in DA2, but I do still think the Anders kiss was awesome, as was the chantry bomb. But nothing compares to some of those epic DAO moments.

Man, there are a lot. Some of the highlights, though ...

1) My Cousland's parents dying. I knew DAO had its hooks into me when I started tearing up over a pair of fictional characters I'd encountered less than two hours of gameplay earlier.

2) My City Elf cutting Vaugh's head off. Probably the single most satisfying kill in the whole franchise for me so far.

3) The moment in the Castless Dwarf origin when the protagonist's helmet gets knocked off and the whole arena reacts. (That was a big one for me, actually. Both dwarf origins are wonderful, but that part was especially dramatic.)

4) Finding out how Broodmothers are made and where darkspawn come from. After that, I have never been able to look at a darkspawn again without thinking of its mother.

5) The death of my noble dwarf warden. What got me crying wasn't her sacrifice - it was Sten's reaction, and the fact that she was made a Paragon posthumously and returned to the Stone. All she'd wanted since being thrown out of Orzammar was to die and redeem herself, and she finally achieved her aim. The fact she did it after finding something other than honour to live for (her companions, the Wardens) made it that much more bittersweet.

6) Varric's Act II quest - from the wonderful Clint Eastwood parody to the much less funny reality. I started out itching to slaughter Bartrand, and that was not what I expected to find.

7) Isabela walking back into the hall with the Tome of Koslun. (That didn't happen on my first run, so it was especially unexpected and great when it did.)

8) Ketojan's self-sacrifice. Utterly heart-wrenching and perfect.

9) Rounding the corner during the final quest to see Bethany. My Hawke was having a very bad day at that point, and there was her beloved little sister, the whole reason she was fighting for the mages, in her Grey Warden uniform and ready to back her up.

10) Fighting Coryepheus. I'd spent the whole DLC thinking 'it can't be!', but there he was. A frelling Magister. Trying to set me on fire.

... and I could go on, possibly all afternoon.

Ha! Me too. I love that I cared that much to be honest. It's fun to get into something as much as I have into this franchise.

The whole Ostagar battle cut scene felt absolutely epic (still does), Duncan's death especially. Also the first time a romance kicked in. I had no idea they were in the game, so when Alistair suddenly pounced I was amazed, wasn't expecting it or the gifts at all, was lovely. When he dumped my PC after being made king I was actually upset too, which surprised me.

Encountering the broodmother in the Deep Roads was creepy as hell and when I finally bit the bullet and had a PC decide Conner had to die (Isolde did it) it had far more emotional impact than I'd expected. Oh and the conversation my casteless dwarf PC had with Sigrun in the marketplace was so touching, I love the writers for putting that bit of bonding in there.

For DA2 it'd have to be my first playthrough when I pretty much threw my PC at Anders (still had the Awakenings version in my head so trusted him entirely), the Chantry thing totally blind-sided me and it took me a good ten minutes to decide what she should do with him (that was after some profuse swearing at Anders/the screen mind you). That and Aveline's talk about her father which brought a real lump to my throat.

Editing to add the magistrate's son, I'd forgotten how much that quest made my skin crawl.

1) The Chantry going BOOM. Elthina totally had it coming, I spent most of the game wishing I could punch her in the face. Too bad Sebastian wasn't in there when it happened.

2) Every single banter between Aveline and Isabela. And between Isabela and Hawke's siblings.

3) Every time in 2 that references Anders' love of cats. It makes me genuinely sad that I can't find him another one, even though dogs are totally better.

4) Playing a rogue in the Act 1 quest to save Feynriel from slavers and the awesome bit with the throwing knife. Actually, almost any bit with that knife.

5) The Long Road

6) When Isabela comes back at the end of Act 2, just in the nick of time.

DA:O: Alistair leaving after I showed mercy to Loghain. Finding out about Wynne being possesed.
Loghains reaction after finding out why only wardens cad defeat archdemon. Telling chantry priestess to get away from that merchant in Lothering. Coming back to burn Cailans body in Ostagar.

DAll: Drunkard Alistair going back to farelden. Meredith jump. Orsino being "embraced". Arishok dialogues. Reading all those letters after each act. Romancing Merill. Watching chantry explode.

DA:O

1. The Archdemon fight. Now THAT, is what I call an ending. It actually made me feel quite emotional to make a choice between Alistair and my character of who should finish it off. Took me a few minutes to decide lol.

2. The first time we meet Morrigan. I just loved her charcter from then on.

3. Return to Ostagar DLC. Going back there and seeing the havoc that was remaining was really something, and coming across King Cailan was unexpected and was very moving.

4. My Mabari war hound. Loved the little guy!

5. The Elven and Human Noble starting zones. The endings of them were great.

I can keep going, but I'll stop there. xD

DA2:

1. All the time I had Varric and Merrill in my party. Their conversations were always fun to listen in on. Plus, I always liked that he called Her Daisy.

2. Anders & Justice problems. That was great!

3. Brother problems...*Sigh* Carver never liked me. :(

4. The death of Hawke's mother. Very very sad scene, and something I always remember.

5. Betraying Isabela for her quest. Was very fun! I did save her though, so all is good. :3

6. Sebastian. Probably one of the coolest companions throughout both games! Even if he did leave me at the end, I still liked him. xD

7. Aveline and her love problems. That quest to help her with her problems was probably the most enjoyable quest I did lol.

DAO:
- The Mage Origin and meeting Duncan there the first time
- Flemeth and her socks philosophy
- Zevran
- the Fade experience (in the mage recruiting quest) - it was very scary
- Hespith and the Broodmother - reminded me of something, that could have been written by Lovecraft (which is, for me, a very good thing)
- meeting Loghain in the Landmeet and finding out, that he is not exactly the villain one would expect

DA 2
- The Gallows - the most scary place in the whole series for me
- Marethari visiting the Alienage - the most beautiful cutscene ever
- Anders storyarc - tragic and beautiful
- Varric: at last a dwarf, who is not a cartoon
- Flemeth again
- Orsino and his great 'Have faith, Knight-Commander'- moment
- The Arishok
- Aveline - my favorite female companion in both games (and her quest in act 2 was really sweet)
- Thrask, the nicest tempal in the history of Thedas (I was really shocked by his death - killing Thrask is like killing a little kitten)
- Sol

Oh, cool thread. DA:O was literally the first game I ever beat (unless you count playing Mario and the original Spyro games when I was a kid)... I was of the "games are so stupid" mindset, and I totally credit Bioware with changing that. So I have lots of DA love in my soul.

Anyway, from Origins:
1. My first Warden was a Dalish. I went in knowing the game had romance and companions and stuff, so I latched on to Tamlen pretty quick. The mirror thing totally floored me. I finished the origin at around 4am, and walked around the next day pestering my boyfriend on whether I'd be getting my buddy back. I then spent the next several days resenting Alistair for not being Tamlen.
2. Ostagar, like most people have said. And the way they all turn their heads when the dogs get killed. They're probably just looking down at the army or something, but in my brain they're all sad about the dogs. Duncan, too.
3. Redcliff, the music and fog and creepy dudes walking down in the cutscene... I love it.
4. The poem before the broodmother. I'm a big chicken and was home alone at night when I played it. Seriously creeped me out.
5. The entire last battle, mostly cause I'd never beaten a game before, let alone one so long that I was so invested in. I might have cried a little. /dork
I also LOVE Leliana's song and curing the werewolves. And the human noble origin. And all the companions during Fort Draken. And the romances. And the landsmeet. I could probably go on for a while....

DA2:
1. Aveline's Act 2 quest. I was surprised how much I ended up liking her character, and this quest still cracks me up. Poor awkward Hawke at the Hanged Man...
2. The cutscene that begins the Qunari attacks, Aveline and Hawke knocking spears away and Hawke giving that look to the Arishok.
3. Bethany's (or Carver's, but more Bethany for me) sickness in the deep roads. Death or not.
4. The mom's death. I am SO GLAD they didn't add a way to save her, which might make me a minority but I love and hate that scene, and I know I'd skip it every time if I could save her.
5. Seamus' death. Oh man. Hawke's lines are terrible here, but it makes me so sad.
6. The fangirl in me went all squishy at Anders' clinic kiss. Woo. Crazy or no, I love that man. Fenris's Act 3 romance stuff was pretty awesome too, since I'd been sulking since Act 2.
Oh, and definitely Orsino in the end of Act 2. That little staff twirl with the cocky comment makes me cheer every time.
EDIT: Oh! And I have to mention the Magistrate's son quest in Act 1. One of the most interesting side quests in the game, and I still debate killing vs. turning him in.

Huh... I apparently like death in DA2.

I definitely became a fan of Aveline while doing her personal quests.

I admired how she took Jeven down after she found out about the "sacrificial deliveries".
Her act 2 quest showed a different side of Aveline, that while she's an awesome tank and great guard captain, she doesn't quite know how to ask a guy out, and needs Hawke's assistance.
Then the act 3 quest. I like her speech to Jeven prior to the battle.

I was upset that while you can flirt with Aveline, there's no romance option. My first Hawke, especially, wanted to make her forget all about Wesley. There should have been a duel with Donnic for Aveline's love.

My first thoughts after seeing what Quentin did to Leandra was "wtf?!!!" Killing Leandra is one thing, but turning her into Frankenstein? That scene was disturbing, and it made me more upset at the writers than the mages.

In Origins, Isolde begging the warden not to kill Connor. That was the first and last time that I didn't get the circle involved. After the deed was done, I literally sat there for several minutes before I could continue with the game, as it was hard to go through with it.

With Isolde begging for her son's life and Leandra's fate, I had to remind myself afterwards that I was, in fact, just playing a videogame, and I didn't really just kill a child or have my actual mother become some demented blood mage's experiment. They were both traumatic and left me speechless afterwards.

I always like being the hero in videogames, and so it's always depressing seeing the outcomes where my character doesn't save the day.

so many great moments posted!

DA:O - I realized 'this is more than an amazing game' and really became emotionally invested when Alistair gave my elf mage warden the rose, completely out of the blue. I accidentally clicked on him after a battle and there he is covered in blood being so sweet and romantic.. it just got me. Then when he sacrificed himself, refusing to let her make the killing blow, I cried and cried through the end credits. Never had a game get to me like that.

DA2 - Not a specific scene, but interacting with the arishock was exciting (I liked how coming up to him at the compound, the scene started and you didn't have to click on him, made it seem like he was in control.) Also the long road Aveline quest, enjoyed seeing how companions had lives outside of the actions taken with Hawke.

The DA2 rivalry scenes in general. The concept still needs some work but I LOVE having a party member who can get POed at my character. It makes their relationships seem more real. But my favorite is the Aveline rivalry scene where she beats up Hawke in the barraks.

Scenes with Loghain or the Arishok. The Darkspawn where a mindless evil army out to destroy the world (yawn). Loghain gave the DA:O emotional weight. The Arishok did the same for DA2 since Meredeth and Orsino were dumb enough to be Darkspawn themselves. Loghain at the Landsmeet was the best in DA:O and the Arishok losing his cool after the poison gas mission was my favorite in DA2.

The Long Road was AWESOME. A "LI" who does not want Hawke and you can play a heartbroken Hawke. Great lines especially with Isabela present. Some of the most wonderfully painful scenes in RPG history between Aveline and Donnic.

Female Dwarf noble and her body guard saying goodbye before she is banished was good but I have mixed feelings with him surviving and becoming a crippled married merchant in Denerim.

Being suckered into a violent cult that demands you give up your free will isn't exactly indicative of great leadership skills.

Just sayin'.
