Edit: And as far as the banter, they must have just started that custom in DA2, because Dalish elves did not do this in Origins.  You know with it being the same clan and all.

Not really. Amongst the Dalish, all Elves are considered equal and a part of the family. Fenarel and other Elves in the Sabrae clan in DAII wear boots and stuff. Merrill says that it's an insult to wear it in front of a superior.

The Dalish don't see anyone within their clan as being "superior" in the sense of being a lord or royalty or anything.

Or see anyone as being superior at all.

Not just the hair...I want...all of that. lol

I tried recreating him in Origins for my first Dalish Elf.

My guy looked nothing like him because Origins not only didn't have the hair but it was also a tad too cartoony for him to look anywhere close to that guy.

I was sad. Very, very sad.

I'm wondering what he'd look like using the DAII Elven racial design philosophy in Origins style graphics. He might actually look really cool.

I mean, I don't hate having humans with pointy ears being Elves, but I also get kinda tired of that. So that's why I liked DAII's design.

Who knows, maybe if I could've recreated him like I wanted I may have been more of a "I have no strong feelings one way or the other" type of guy instead of "DAII style all the way!".

Then I thought the devs defeated the purpose of trying to make the elves and other races unique by coping out and making the main characters from other races look more human.

Absolutely. Every time someone puts forward Fenris, Merrill or Tallis as "Hey, there ARE good-looking elves!", they fall prey to the fact that both Merrill but especially Tallis and Fenris are as close to "human with pointy ears" as you can get with the new design. (I just happened to have Sarel from DA:O and Tallis on the same page on DA wiki, and their facial features are almost identical. Except that Tallis(!) has stronger jaws...)

Why? Because we consider beautiful what resembles us most. That's how a species survives.

Mutual genetic compatibility and attraction should matter if you want there to be half-elves.

(And I never heard anyone complaining about DA:O Dwarves looking just like "short stocky humans with an alcohol problem".)

Complaining that elves are just "humans with pointy ears" is just like complaining that a cyclope has one eye and a harpy looks to bird like,

"humans with pointy ears" imo just came up by the da2 fanboys/girls that would just say anything to protect
da2

Nah. It came form Dragon Age Wiki. Elves were described there as "humans with pointy ears".
But after DA2 this page has been modified as this was no longer true.

No, we consider more symmetrical faces more beautiful, not "what resembles us most", otherwise you wouldn't have black people going out with whites, asians going out with whites etc., blah.

Though I do find the "they're just humans with pointy ears" argument kind of lame since it tends to be used to justify Bioware butchering the elves.

My point is that its actually true that elves are "humans with pointy ears" (only prettier then humans)
But, complaining about that is nonesense, its just like complaining that cyclopes have one eye

if the people fell the need to have another different "unique" race they should rather concentrate
on how the fex should look

I know. I despise the new elves look with pure hatred + I don't find any of the elves atractive now. Not even single one of them.
And Merill is the worst of them. She annoy the crap out of me literally. I just can't stand the way she talks,  her behaviour, her voice, her looks ... everything.

ehhhh ok.  [/rant]

while you make a point I agree with, if one were to actually look at the male Elves' body structure sans shirt -- which you can do in MotA -- you can see that they are not emaciated and are actually muscular.

Just because a person has a lithe body frame doesn't mean they are emaciated or that they can't be muscular.

I'm testament enough to that to the people that know me. I get comments all the time on how skinny I am, yet I'm a really strong person.

*is a bit shameful of saying that, as it sounds like I'm boasting when that's not my intent*

I've grown tired of the discussion ages ago, but I want to chime in on this.

Personally I never had much of a problem with DA2 elves' bodies (other than maybe the female waistline, but that's a different issue). Yes, they are extremely slender in built, but as far as I can tell they have no bones nearly poking through their skin and I can definitely see how humans could find that beautiful (hey, a bit less extreme and I'd drool over them myself if I lived in Thedas), but their heads, oh their makerdamn heads of doom! They aren't attractive, not even eerily attractive, they're just eerie - party members excluded, but only barely so. I don't see how floppy WarCraft elf ears* are by any definition better than believable Middle-Earth elf ears, but as long as they don't add the respective eyebrows, I can deal with it. I'm not a fan of the eyes, either, but hey, they want exotic, so be it. But the foreheads and noses... they may be less unuseful than those extravagant ears, but they are ugly beyond comprehension. BioWare, you've explicitly labelled your Dragon Age elves as extremely attractive to humans in almost every DA product released, therefore you can't get overly fancy in redesigning them, for FSM's sake! Please let His Noodly Appendage show you the way back to the light!

*not quite as large, I know, but the general design is still the same

You should make another poll with the option: I dont like both, i choose dao elves over the da2 elves but i must say that the dao werent looking good too...
imo the majority of the people that choose dao elves over the da2 elves prefer the classic elves (tolkien elves) and i hope they change the elf design for da3 and wont be so stubborn not to change it, as far as i know they would listen to feedback

Technically, since elves aren't real they can be whatever the hell the creator wants them to be. This is why the same word used to describe this:

Also describes this:

And many other designs.

In a novel I am working on, elves are taller and more physically imposing than humans and their skin glitters due to mineral deposits naturally occuring in their skin that allow them to use magic.

if you are writing a novel you should know what you are talking about, the da world is already set now and since its described that elves are beautiful and attractive they cant change them out of the blue to harry potter elves

Stay away from me, Bella! I'm a monster!

...but your actual point (about elves potentially looking like a wide variety of things) is actually one I agree with. The issue with DA2 is not that elves are not allowed to look like anime giraffes, it's that the anime giraffe look isn't aesthetically pleasing or consistent with DA:O canon.

And people still do find the new elves beautiful and attractive. In game and out. And even if no one outside of the games found the new elves attractive, it still wouldn't matter as long as the people in the game do find it attractive. We aren't people in Thedas, so we can't know what they consider to be attractive.  Hell, it could be the differences between humans and elves that people in Thedas are attracted to. Like an extreme version of opposites attract. I don't find elongated necks wrapped in gold wire, sharpened teeth or multiple piercings attractive, but there are whole tribes of people who find those features to be part of their spectrum for beauty.

Allow me to post this once again:

This is Twiggy. She is far too skinny for my tastes; however, she was a world famous supermodel and a fashion icon. She was voted British woman of the year and the Face of 1966. She has also been on the cover of several fashion magazines.

Lol, yeah. Except sparkly elves is far more believable than sparkly vampires and in my novel the magicless humans create magitek style devices to crush the elven empire and come close to commiting genocide. 'Cause screw elves.

Still i think that bioware could come up with a better elf desing which could still be unique but also attractive without breaking the rules from the da universe which they set themselves, if they didnt liked how they looked they should have changed their looks right from the start. i would just be happy if the elves would look like in the dao concept art which were great.
here are some pictures

I would be soooo happy with those elf designs but i dont see it coming that they will ever go back to this designs

Yes, unfortunately :/  It only took the fashion world 40+ years since, to start to realize that promoting borderline anorexic 16 year olds as the ideal appearance for mature women might be a little irresponsible thing to do.

Yes she was world famous but if you would ask a guy if he would like such a skinny women almost everybody would say no to you. Those women are only so thin because they want to get on the newspapers. I am a women(my account name is named after my son ) and i must say that being so skinny is just sick.
"Not that i am jealouse or so i am thin myself but not that much lol"

I'm pretty sure that Gaider already said that there were no plans to change the artstyle again beyond a few tweaks here and there. That would include not changing the elves back.
