Honestly? In a heartbeat.

Why? There is nothing worse than living a boring life and dying without having achieved anything of value. Absolutely NOTHING. If something like sins exist wasting a life is definitely one.
Sure, Shepard leads an extremely dangerous life, carries unbelievable burdens, maybe even lost his family, had / has to sacrifice people under his command - but his life has a meaning, its exciting, its so much more intense in a good and bad way .

Like I said, its a no-brainer for me.

I apologize if some disability prevents you, but if not:

If you feel that way, why are you chatting on a gaming message board? Go join the Peace corp or the Red Cross. Tutor at an inner-city school. Volunteer with Greenpeace or the like.

Whatever your skills, whatever your focus, there is a way you can be making a difference. Personally I volunteer locally with animals when I have time. Which isn't much lately, but there you go.

All the hardships, intensity and pain would be worth it.  To explore space in my own ship, befriend and combat alien species, have psychic brain sex with Liara, **** yes I would trade my mundane meaningless life for all that.

Scratch the mindf*ck - I stay with Ash. But besides that, I concur.

Did I ever told you guys I have a tear in my eyes while watching the stars? There I feel home. Feel as if I got born in wrong time. Whatever. Next life will be better. Maybe.

Dude, why do you think people play ME+? It is that yearning in all of us for the EPIC, to be lifted off the mundane ground into the heavens or stars, to be something more than we are. Seriously, it's not just action and shooting, which are cool, it's a lot more than that. It's a kind of escapism at the end of the day, having thing you do matter, because you know whatever you are doing now, doesn't mean ****, you, me, all of us are just nobodies. At the end of the day that is the essence of an RPG, a good one, you being someone that matters where the decisions you make matter. For most of us, it is the highest form of exhaltation that we can ever experience.

And you made another point. Computer games, novelles and whatever got invented to distract people from their dull existence have only this purpose: entertaining people, giving them a (virtual) meaning.

That's it. I don't become a hero because I play Mass Effect, Fallout, you name it. I'm still the same dull boring person that writes stories as soon as there's nothing left for entertainment. Which happens quite often to me ... life is too slow and at the same time, days are too short.

Change my life? Hmm, wait, don't need that. Interesting times are looming already. "Interesting" doesn't mean "nice".

Indeed.
And right now we're living in -really- interesting times.

Must say I'd rather save the galaxy than living on a dying world. Which seems to be the case right now. :pinched:

Wow, lot of self loathing here.

I think people forget that, if we are to handwave the fact that Shepard is a fictional character, Shepard had immense training and life experience to get where they were. You know. Hard work. A **** ton of hardwork. They didn't just pop out AwesomeMcCoolGuy.

Same thing with real life. Hard work.

Would you?

Funny that you wrote his/hers, since I guess you are male. You know why funny? Because I was gonna say if I could be femShep, I would. Even though, if I would be female I would be lesbian ofc. Image IPB I just can't stand male Shep. Hate the default look and never succeeded to make a custom that wasn't that ugly that I could play through the first hour. In both, ME and ME2.

What are you talking about? I AM Commander Shepard.

All kidding aside, yes, I would certainly trade it. I have a comfortable life which I'm happy with, no doubt, so it's not that my existence is so terribly dreary that I feel the need to change it. Would life in the ME universe battling incredible odds be harder? Sure it would. As for the daily dosage of stress, sorrow and angst though, it's not much different than the here and now. Want genocide and misery? Visit a third world country. Violence? You'll find the effects of that just about anywhere in the world.

Unfortunately in life, decisions are just a *little* bit harder than blue/red linguistic jujitsu. Earning a friend's loyalty won't save them from becoming a burning fireball either. I'm assuming we're not taking the game mechanics into this hypothetical idea though. I personally "enjoy" living within an adrenaline rush, so that's a plus for me. Blame my previous line of work.

The thing that really makes it worth it though is that I'm a bit of a sci fi nerd. I love the idea of being about to just hop in a ship and see other planets, to see how geology and biology differs outside of our solar system. Seeing extraterrestrial cultures both in their differences and parallels to our own is icing on the cake. That alone makes it worth it.

Now, would I see myself shacking up with an alien if that were real life? Well, that's still up for debate...

Are you referring to the worldwide economy which is going to crash even worse than it did before followed by Armageddon and the **** hitting the fan?

Yeah. your're right, just escapism, some people do drugs, we do ME...lol.

Nah, the world will be fine, even if we're not.

And I have a lot of faith in human resourcefulness. We're not doing anything positive right now because unfortunately the need isn't apparent enough to the right people. But when we hit that tipping point, when climate change becomes obvious, when we run out of resources, when we have too many people to feed even the rich western world, or any other major disaster crops up... human resourcefulness will find a way out.

It won't be painless, and a lot of people may die before the problem is solved, and civilization as we know it might be altered forever, but as a species I think we can survive and think our way out of any crisis.

Whenever I need to remind myself of that, all I need to do is look at the moon, and remember that we went there. We decided that we should go there, within a decade, and then we went and did it. If we can do that, we can do anything; all we need is sufficient impetus to do it.

I share your pessimism.

America seemingly sidelining many of the things that made it great (the space program, the particle accellerator even if it was outdated, the ongoing debates on cleaner energy, INDUSTRY and pride in one's work) all makes me very sad... ME is a great escape, but unfortunately far less permanent.

Well on one hand, you have to fight the Reapers.

On the other, you get to bang hot alien chicks.

...That's a tough one.

Wow, lots of depressing posts. IF the world goes to ****, I'm not worried: I have guns and plentiful ammo.

All Empires fall eventually. I always thought it is a question fo time until single countries split from the USA. And this time they can't send soldiers in. Anyway, humanity destroying the world is a bit of an exaggeration. The world has endured much worse than humans ever did and still exists. As someone said, the only thing humans are maybe going to eradicate is humankind. Then we make place for new species. Just like the dinosaurs made place for us.

99.9% of all the women in the galaxy want to sleep with Shepard after a mere handful of conversations. Yeah, I'll be Shepard. Locking lips with Jack's juicy lips. Gettin n dem quarian hips. Donkin Miranda's Badonkadonk donk. Exploring the mysteries of azure with Liara. I've got my priorities straight.

I would concur if this resourcefulness would show up soon. I can't say this is going to happen as long as most of the ppl on this world are starving and only a few thousands decide for billions.

I think the Drell in ME series show our true destiny: an overcrowded world stripped of any resources to get of this world. And no, I don't believe FTL will be possible unless we find a physical law that allows us to do FTL without violating theory of relativity. Space Arks are possible to construct NOW, but I think we won't have the resources left in 30, 40 years.

And I don't see that ANYONE is caring about tomorrow. Most of mankind live either in presence or even in the past, but only few care about the future. I'm one of the few kinda.

Shepard doesn't have a very enviable life.

Respected experts around here say citizen should really prepare themselves for the worst case scenario, get canned food, and some even say people should think about arming themselves to defend their property.
There is also talk about a big crash resulting in civil-war like unrests etc. TV usually tries to down-play stuff (see Fukushima and Egypt) so it kind of worries me.

Those are Shepards best powers. Not tech powers, not biotics and not combat powers but saving and reloading. In fact every epic video game hero these days has those two at their disposal. Live savers. Imagine if we had that function in real life.

Well, for starters, all of our lives are infinitely less important or interesting than Shepard's. As Shepard you are someone and the fate of the galaxy rests in your hands. That is just one small aspect of it all...

The fate of the relaxy only rests with Shepard because Bioware says it does. If the game was real Shepard would just be another marine with an all-human crew.
