Inspired by an experience I just had in Skyrim (damn you, slaughterfish!), I was wondering what sorts of things make my good friends here on BSN shake in their boots. It could be anything, and there are no judgments to be made on whatever it might be.

Me? There are two things I fear above all else - deep water, and Black Widow spiders. Deep water scares me because I have no idea what's under me - I'm out of my element in the water, and I'm pretty much helpless against anything that might be lurking beneath me.

Black Widow spiders (or Redback spiders as our friends in Australia would know them)... well, that one should speak for itself. Of course, it doesn't help that I found one in my toy box when I was a little kid, scarring my impressionable little mind - and that the area I live in is rife with them.

So, how about you BSN? What makes your blood curdle?

Not too much that I can't get over easily. However, two things: One is the water, like you OP, for pretty much the same reasons. The other is heights, especially if it's near a cliff or something: I'm absolutely terrified that either I'll slip, or I'll lose control of myself and I'll jump off of the edge. ANd for all the people who love to say "go do it, that'll cure it," that's completely false. Being at the top of the Empire State Building did not cure my fear of heights; it just made me scared and want to get down. Being in that big room at the top of the Sears Tower did not cure it (especially with that section that's outside that you can walk on--no words for the fear), it just made me stand right next to the elevators until I could get down.

So, deep water and heights.

So very little I fear these days. Most of my fears relate to the safety of others. My wife, my children, I fear for their well being. For myself, perhaps total disability, but only insofar as I would not be able to care for my loved ones.

^^^ this, about 30% of all face to face conversations with people I haven't known a long time set off the fight or flight response in me.

...oh yeah, I forgot about that one. I try to shun other people when I can help it, and rarely engage anyone I'm not already familiar with in conversation. If a stranger does try to make small talk with me, I usually act disingenuous and uninterested - and that's usually enough to deter them from bothering me any further.

For me, I wouldn't say it's a fear, per se, but it's something I'll likely never do.

Aphenphosmphobia- Fear of being touched. (Haphephobia) :(

My childhood was less than stellar and I've developed a fear of others (mainly girls for some odd reason) touching me, as I associate it with pain.

So yeah.

...and I forgot about this one as well. I don't associate it with pain, but I do get a bit jumpy if someone touches me.

Incidentally, I also don't like making eye contact with people for more than a few seconds - it makes me uncomfortable. It also bothers me when someone is standing behind me, especially when I'm sitting down.

Perhaps I should have named this thread "What are your greatest idiosyncrasies?" instead. LOL.

Oh, yeah. This is defintely on the top of my psychotically long list.  Even if I'm dating someone, I still  have to warrent their touch or I get jumpy. This really only applies to men, though.

You've progressed more than I...:P

It's been two years since I moved, lost weight and the bullying stopped. I still can't let anyone touch me, and it took my best friend 18 months to even hug me (and it was only for a second before I instinctively jumped back and landed on my rear end. :?). As such, I've never had a girlfriend, never held a girls hand, never hugged a girl back or anything of the sort. And I'm 18. I hate phobias. :( Not because I want a girlfriend (couldn't care less to be honest) but because I hate fearing it.

And isn't that the great pitfall of human psychology and emotions? To hate how you feel about something (or someone, as the case may be) - yet be unable to control, suppress, or erase that feeling no matter how hard you try. It just gnaws at you from the inside, like a worm eating through the core of an apple.

A miserable state to find yourself in, indeed. I'm unfortunate to have experienced that too many times in my life.

My biggest fears are spiders and some other ugly insects...ever since I saw a documentary about the so-called bed bugs, I have had an immense fear of them as well, even though I've never encountered them before. On a more serious note, I am terribly afraid to get hurt and/or backstabbed by someone I have come to trust. It happened to me before in the past and it has caused me to have a hard time letting people near me and trust them. I usually keep people at a distance for that reason, and only very few people have my full trust. I'm also afraid of drowning or even being home alone at night. It's silly, I know, but I just want someone to be near me when it's night, doesn't matter whether it's my brother or a friend. I guess I'm afraid of the dark :P I'm also afraid of burglars, maybe because we have an alarm system that makes such a scary sound when it goes off...especially scary at night, lol. But most of all, I would say I'm afraid of being abandoned by those who love me, like my family and end up all alone.

I am absouletly terrified of getting bed bugs. They can be anywhere. Clean house to dirty house. And I heard they are ridiculously hard to get rid of.

Heights is my greatest fear. I was told I have an extreme fear of heights. I won't lie, I cried like a girl when I was forced to rapel down a 45 foot tower.

I wouldn't say fear, but insects as a whole disgust me. Though you could say I'm afraid of being stung.
