Allow me to preface this by saying I know this is all out of date and much discussed, I'm just sharing my thoughts.

So I'm doing a perfect playthrough for ME 3 and thought I'd finally give some of the DLC a try.

I'm not a big fan of the concept. If it's a free-to-play game like LotRO, then obviously paying for additional content is the basis of the buisiness model. If I plunked down full-price on a pre-order I feel I already bought the whole damn game, even if you finish parts of it after arrival.

But, I figure, what the hell, I'll give it a shot.

So I plunked down $20 and got Kasumi, LotSB and the pack with the Kestral armour and Incisor.

Do I feel I got my moneys worth? No, not really. That $20 was a third of the price of the game. It didn't even come close to adding 1/3rd more content. I think cash for DLC is a fine buisiness model for a FtP game. For something I spent full retail price on? I went either a free update or a proper expansion pack with additional content proportional to the money I pay.

So, about the content itself.

Kestral armour I love, although even though the helmet has optimal stat qualities it's so freaking stupid to look at I couldn't bear to wear it. Form follows function guys. ME 2 really needs a helmet toggle for out of combat anyway. It's like walking onto Omega wearing terminous armour and wondering how they hell anybody knows my species, let alone that I'm Cmdr. Shepard. The incisor rifle is great, but not better than the Widow so...

Kasumi. Fun mission. Like the character. Hate flash-bang grenades. It was nice to finally get 'civvies' without a Cerberus logo on them. The mission was short, but my god do I love that Locust smg.  Also the whole 'turn into spider woman to hack the shields' thing? A little over the top, given that she'll never do anything like that again. Ever. Also, someone stealing the head of the Statue of Liberty? Give me a break.

Lair of the Shadow Broker. ... You know, when this mission started I thought "My god! They finally put in another Spectre who isn't trying to kill me, or about to die! Awesome." *sigh* Anyway, after that decent boss fight, we have about a 15 minute replay of the race up the council tower from ME 1. Another excellent boss fight, although for the life of me I have no idea what was in that ceiling fixture Liara used to kill the SB. And then wrap up. Wrap up was cool. The dossiers are awesome, although I'm quite disturbed to see Anderson talking to Cerberus and drinking heavily. Interesting to see that the bartending Matriarch really is Liara's dad, although one wonders why Liara doesn't know that, since she was working half a block away. ... I dunno. It's obviously a good set-up for things to come in ME 3. It provides a lot of interesting back story. It has some good lines. "What kind of guns does thing thing have?" "It's a cab Shepard. It has a fare meter." This is probably enough bang-for-the buck to count as a mini-expansion, althought it really feels like something that should have shipped as part of the game. It's too vital to what is to come.

Just my 2¢

1. DLC is more expensive than the old-school expansion packs they are designed to replace, true. However, the US dollar (and the currencies of most countries) has suffered from inflation since the "good old days" of '90s gaming. Things are more expensive everywhere. Is it fair? No. Is it inevitable? I think so. To each his own.

2. The Inscisor is horrible in Shepard's hands because of the low ammo. The Inscisor is by far the best squadmate weapon in ME2. Don't discount its effectiveness in the hands of Garrus, Thane, and Zaeed.

3. Some people like Flashbangs for Shepard. I do not. However, there is no squadmate power in the game that is as powerful in the hands of the squadmate than Flashbang for Kasumi. It has a HUGE radius, excellent overheat effect, stun, and is instant cast like all squadmate powers. Check youtube for many videos of how Harbinger breaks when hit by Flashbang.

4. I also would have liked for LotSB to have been in the core game. However, I think it is awesome enough that I think it was worth the price. Again, to each his own.

Edit:
5. Now Arrival is a DLC that made me think it wasn't worth the price.  Not because it wasn't good, but because I think it should have been greatly expanded and made a central part of the core game.  When I step back and think, ME2 feels like an intermission between ME1 and 3.  The Arrival mission could have been the hook for the main plot of ME2 and it would have been an excellent second act.  Oh well.  Looking forward to ME3.

While I agree that things like Lair should have been a part of the game to begin with, (Because without it, Liara is a lot like those horrible emails we get regarding ME1; nothing other than a blatant reminder of how NOT to handle player actions in a sequel.) I also see why it wasn't;

Bioware has many times, referred to the ME project as "Daunting," and "Huge," and they themselves were/are intimidated by what they've decided to do, which means to me that they have been flustered ever since ME1 was finished, and they began working on ME2. Which means (Again, to me,) that they had their hands full with smashing the relevant things into the games without all the frills and side missions they probably wanted to put in at launch. As fun as Kasumi-chan's mission was, and as badass as Zaeed was, they were hardly story related.

Which is why most DLC is created in the first place; now that the developer has finished the core game, with the minimum requirements to tell the story locked in, they can start adding things they probably wanted to in the first place. Things like money, resources, time, and life just get in the way. Unfortunate, but true.

Which is why. in the end, I would trade all side-missions for a rock solid story with ALL the elements in place, not tacked on later. Don't get me wrong, fighting geth with a weather control machine is interesting, but the story should come first. Maybe if they'd cut out some of the filler, things like the VS encounter on Horizon wouldn't have been so staggeringly stupid, and things like Lair would have been there at launch,

So in short, There are good and bad reasons to pay for DLC. The End.

EDIT:

@SpockLives: ME2, to me, felt like a waste of time, and Arrival is a perfect example of why; in the end, we haven't done anything at all, the Reapers are still coming, and we're not any closer to stopping them than when we started, Sure, we built up a team, woohoo, but the team soon breaks apart after the game so that everyone can do their own thing and stretch their legs. Aside from the datapad we get in the end cutscene (The one with Harbinger on it.) I saw nothing that meant we did anything constructive at all.

I think they're okay, if overpriced. I don't think each DLC should be priced more than £2.50.
