Jack, Mordin, Legion, and Miranda are a pretty big deal.  Kasumi, Thane, Zaeed, Jacob, Grunt, and Samara have short, but pretty damn awesome appearances.

Samara's especially.  Nngh, tears.

That depends on when you do the Derelict Reaper mission.

You can just do siequests after Horizon, and after 5 or so you'll go to the Collector Ship, and then you can recruit Legion.

You can have Legion for pretty much the whole game (after Horizon) if you want.

The A story (Stop the Collectors) was a bit meh. Forming the team to stop the collectors however, with all those recuitment and loyalty missions along with other side quests was awesome. It was a wonderful collection of short stories in the Mass Effect Universe preparing you for Mass Effect 3.

Well that's good, I am not up to date on ME3 news because I don't want to spoil myself too much. But as I said, I know Ashley, Garrus, Tali and Liara will be quadmates and I think Jack has also been confirmed. That's 5 out of my personal top 7 most wanted. I think Legion is intersting enough to make at least a cameo and Grunt ... well I'd take any Krogan actually. So I guess I don't have anything to complain about actually. Weird.

...Legion gets recruited on the Derelict Reaper, which gives you the IFF and a couple of missions before the abduction. Not a lot of finesse.

I find a little funny that first there was whining about how the ME1 squad wasn't in the sequel, and now that the majority of them are, everyone's complaining about how the whole ME2 squad isn't in there.

Which is a pretty ridiculous demand, since BioWare knows and most fans knows that ME2 suffered from too many new squadmates.

i no there was too many squadmates, but they introduced them now! they are now important!

i have read that they left a citadel side quest out of ME2 and are adding it back in to ME3. and they keep talking about new romances. i would love it if samara gave up her code to be with shep.

Because Shepard had to stop the Collectors, and -by extension- the Reapers. It's the same reason Cerberus brought Shep back in the first place.

I'm not sure what you are looking to hear, you seem to be looking at it from the perspective of in-universe and on-couch at the same time. If you THINK about a game, it's going to sound silly no matter what.

Mass Effect 2 was MADE for the purpose of forming the middle of the trilogy, and setting things up for ME3.

Now, within the game, the reason to build a new team was because not only was the original team too small and unskilled in certain needed areas, but everyone other than Tali, Garrus, Joker, and the Doc were either busy, or being total dicks.

Also, nearly every plot world was a recruitment mission or loyalty mission, so the game would be a little short without them

Not long enough???

You can do the following missions with Legion:
EVERY Loyalty Mission (12)
Samara, Thane, Tali Recruitment (3)
Lair of the Shadow Broker (1, but is the length of at least 2)
Overlord (1)
Arrival (1, length of at least 2)
Almost every N7 mission (15+)
Suicide Mission (1)

So that's over 30 missions...
