Personally I wish that Bioware had never included romance in the games to begin with. It's all come across as forced and without substance in my eyes. I don't consider a few forced flirtatious lines followed by a laughably bad cutscene of dry-humping to be "romance". If you're seriously turned on by romance as depicted in ME games, then to me you're no different than one of those hardcore Twilight fans who thinks the books are the "most romantic ever!"
I've also always considered the romances to be a waste of resources which could be better spent on other things, like more polish, more types of enemies, more worlds, etc. I also feel it's thinly-veiled cash-grab to fans of dating sims. (Many of the multiplayer opponents use the same arguments. Therefore, I think anyone who opposes MP for those reasons but supports the romances is a hypocrite. But that is a discussion for another thread...)
I'm not saying romance has no place in video games. I've seen countless examples of romance in video games handled better than ME. It's just that Bioware, quite simply, cannot write romance at all. Portraying everyone in the game as Shepherd-sexual just reinforces the fact that the whole atmosphere is programmed and artificial. That alone would be bad enough, but the romances themselves are also horrible, as I've already said. So to answer the OP, the romances are worse than "meh". Much worse.
Indeed, the biggest reason why the "romances" are such epic fails is that they try to paint it as being "twu lub" which is an utter joke. A handful of brief conversations where they don't even display physical attraction and I'm supposed to believe they're madly in love? **** out of here with that bull****.
What's funny is that a lot of those who defend the ME "romances" slam Witcher 2's sex scene(s), which is pretty comical as that game doesn't try to portray it as being anything other than a lust filled desire for Geralt to get laid(that makes it superior to BW's shallow lulzworthy cheesefests).
