At least, they're better than Fable's romance. ^^
Most Mass Effect romances are .. Meh IMO

Jack's romance is a little cliched IMO.
Shepard: Hi.
Jack: Get lost!
Shepard: Hi.
Jack: Get lost!
Shepard: Hi.
Jack: Blow up building!
Shepard: Done. Hi!
Jack: Get lost. Thinking.
*Omega 4 Relay*
Jack: Hi!
Shepard: What the hell?!
*Sex*
HAH YES, "Cliche" ... I dismiss this claim.
Cliche is a buzzword that people use to dismiss the genuinity of anything they don't want to accept, without actually forming any kind of argument, just implying that it's not original because something like it has been done before ~ somewhere.
To me, Jack's romance is easily among the most genuine of romance options. It's built the way any relationship should be: on mutual trust, respect, and attraction. To that end, I've always disagreed about Tali's being a contrived romance, it's very much the same concept.
BTW, the *sex* conclusion is not a given. It can be taken at face value - as a non-sex scene.

Meh, I enjoy them. The main thing for me though, is that there has to be more dialogue and flirting before "the big moment", and it has to continue past the sex scene as well, otherwise it just looks like friends have a one nighter. I agree both Dragon Age games have been better in the romance department than both Mass Effect games, but they were definitely not bad(and the sex never looked awkward to me, not sure whay people are expecting).

If you ask me, I think ME1 romances feel a tad more natural. Mostly because there's a proper build up. You're going through several dialogues before you even know there's something building up. Some guys call it "ninjamance" since it doesn't come with a big "I want you boy/girlfriend" line.
In ME2 there's a clearly visible point at which a romance kicks in: after finishing the loyalty mission of that particular LI. There's not much time for a proper build up. Since I don't have a female Shepard I can speak only for male Sheps: the only romance that seems to have a build up is Miranda's. At least it feels like one, since there is a golden thread from beginning: Miranda's issues with her heritage. Shepard can use this to get in her pants, if you want.
Just my opinion. Overall, I like ME1 romances more. And if the stuff I read & heard is right, ME3 romance arcs are going to be quite ... satisfying.

Harvest Moon games have trained me to be easily satisfied by virtual relationships. Live with me in my cabin and don't break my eggs, everything will work out just fine.
That said, I enjoyed the ME romances. They weren't as well done as Dragon Age's, of course, but that was just because one game had a different, freer dialogue system and the other took course over a ten year period.
The only thing I didn't like about them was that they treated sex as the big payoff, which... it wasn't for me. (Especially because I romanced Garrus most of the time.) It's all that mushy stuff before and after that I like in fiction.
