Until a whole college town needs to spend a week cleaning up after the release of a BioWare game, like I've personally witnessed after a football team wins the playoffs, it's not even close.
Not too far behind sports fans are music fans. Watch video of audiences watching the Beatles, or Elvis. Read about the psycho stalkers, or the servers dedicated to Justin Beiber tweeted, or just think about singers assaulted (and killed) by fans...
And we can always look at Twihards.

Hardly. When it comes to video games, there are games with far more...devoted fanbases, like Sonic fans for one. Bioware has just done such a good job with their creation that people can validly line up and defend their side (stuff like PvR). In addition, they've done a good job with characters that genuinely polarize people. That's why it seems like a bad fanbase: Bioware's doing it right.

Many scare me. But those are the ones who lurk in the Anders, Fenris and Tali threads. I try to stay away from those dark alleys, for my well being.
Others make me laugh. Such as those who defend every single crap decision BW makes.

All fanbases are pretty much the same. Be it for games or a movie series, book series or whatever else. The Sonic fanbase can be just as unreasonable as the Halo one or the Bioware fans etc. LotR and Harry Potter books have a very strong fanbase that geek over things and get angry at any new release because it's not as good as the original or whatever.
People who are fans often feel very strongly about what they are fans of so more often than not they act unreasonably that's just what happens. Nothing the creator does will ever be good enough for the idealism they have for their favourite series so they are bound to lash out.
On the subject of Sonic fans i remember chatting to Roger Craig Smith just after he got the role as the new voice of Sonic and he said he was told when he got the job that the fanbase is very dedicated so he might get a few people who don't like him and he thought nothing of it having dealt with crtics before and like an hour after the announcement he checked his mailbox and it was full of mails like "YOU SUCK!!! I HATE YOU!!" it was pretty funny to imagine.

Yes, see why in the poll, But I only go to three forums (Well minus a coupld of mod sites), here, one old Anime forum which averages on post every two days, so dead, 343 forums, and lastly some mod sites for my RTS games.
Out of those 343 is stable as the Bungie fan boys stay over there, the OA is dead, and the Mod sites, if you don't like the community you'll find yourself either being banned or the members being allow to curb stomp you.
As to the TES site, thats a no crap forum, I mean how the game has changed rapidly, and how many morrowind fan boys there are its bound to be a ****ty place.
