Apologies once again if this has already been satisfactorily answered but what sort of magic does Marethari use?  In both Origins and DA2 it is described as old magic.  Clearly it is quite powerful since she is able to single handedly send Hawke and companions into the Fade, something that First enchanter Irving was only able to do with the assistance of fellow mages and lyrium.   Jowan was able to do this single handedly but it needed a blood sacrifice.   So what does Marethari use?  She clearly does not have access to large supplies of lyrium since Merrill says the reason she turned to blood magic to cleanse her mirror was because she did not have access to sufficient lyrium.   I would imagine it would take more lyrium to send up to four people into the Fade than cleanse one mirror but even if not, it would surely require some in order to boost Marethari's powers sufficiently.   I presume she doesn't use blood magic or she would not be so critical of Merrill.   So does she use some other form of magic that is only available to elves?

Red Bull?

I'm not sure, though I suspect they weren't incredibly concerned with continuity when they had Marethari use that bit of magic. That being said, it's possible that she is just very, very skilled or has developed techniques that the Circle doesn't know about (after all, she is outside of their influence). Also, maybe she just put them to sleep and then used magic to pull them more into the Fade than they usually would be, sortof riding the coattails of the natural process (though that doesn't make much sense if Varric went).

We may never know.

Dwarfs can be forced into the Fade, like by the demon in origins. Marethari could be on the same level of power given her knowlage.

For all we know, she may have used a school of entroypy ritual to put them to sleep, used Fenriel's home and mother as links to things he finds familiar to send them to he approximate location in the Fade.

We should remember that there are magics the circle doesn't teach because A.) they don't know about it or B.) the Chantry wouldn't be comfortable letting mages learn such magic.

Morrigan is considered a maleficar not because she's a blood mage but because she's a shapeshifter. And shape shifting is a type of magic not condoned by the Circle, therefore she is maleficar. Any magic not practiced by the Circle is instantly branded maleficarum.

We may not understand Merethari's magic, but the amount of power for the ritual does make me curious nevertheless.

I wouldn't call that her magic. It's an ancient Dalish Somniari magic ritual that she learned to help Feynriel -- though IIRC she just wanted him made Tranquil without even trying to save him -- and she used parts of Feynriel's childhood to help the spell.
