Risen Hero
An Occasional and Sporadic Update:

It has been a long time since I have posted any updates here on this forum. I decided to start a new
thread instead of resurrecting one of the old ones I had going.

A quick overview:

Risen Hero will be a trilogy. Chapter 1: Thrown to the Wilds is complete and on the Vault. If you haven't played it yet, give it a try. There may be a few minor spoilers ahead but I will try to leave the big ones out. Chapter 2: The Powers of Chaos is in development. And finally Chapter 3: Destruction of Destiny, is just a happy thought in my head. Hopefully a couple of you will be around once it is completed. Chapter 2 is about 1/3 to ½ complete. Building has been going a bit slower than chapter 1. One of the reason for this is I am trying to make it a bit more of a dynamic game with multiple choices and consequences. Chapter 1 was a very linear game, the player was running for their life and had to reach a monastery. Chapter 2 will start right were chapter 1 left off with the player stepping out of the portal they used to escape after the final battle with Dor'Gallon. They will be presented with several choices and they can choose which direction to go. While the player won't be able immediately confront the main antagonist, they will have the opportunity rather quickly should they choose. I am also working on making a more seamless transition between chapter 2 and 3, with areas in chapter 2 remaining accessible in chapter 3. Most of chapter 1 will be inaccessible with the exception of the monastery, Akuji's crypt (if it wasn't completed) and the Waste area and the network of tunnels there.

For traveling I will be using 2 World Maps. One for the Western Heartlands where chapter 1 took place and chapter 2 starts. There is also be a map for the Swords Coast. Right now I just have a blank parchment with the clickable locations on the map. At some point I will be asking if someone within the community is up to making a tolkienesque map of the areas. I do have 1 overland map that is created and about 90% complete. I just need to create map goodies and a couple more sub area transitions. I am using the overland map for a large swamp area, this will be a southern section of the Marsh of Chielimber. I am tried to create a 50% scale, so when you enter an exterior area it will, be nearly identical to the overland map. This is a trick and a half but I think it will be fun once it is complete, as well as give the swamp a larger feel and offer more exploration opinions then a regular area.

With chapter 2 there will be two home-bases. The monastery with the monks and a second darker base.
The second base has a group of demonic merchants from the Endless Abyss Risen Hero Blog: Demonic Merchants. Each one has a short backstory and personality to go along with them. The most sinister merchant, The Keeper, will not have a store but will trade through conversation with the player. He will also share the history of the other merchants and other bits of information with the player for a cost. He will present the cost as a riddle to the player and they must place the correct item in a basket as payment before he shares his information. This will all function off of integers. If the player is trying to guess at item X and accidentally puts item Y in there, the Keeper will only recognize item Y if he requested it. This should keep a player from unlocking additional information ahead of time. The community also provided some great ideas for custom items these merchants will sell. A paladin won't find too much they will be willing to use, but all the other players should find a couple of fun or interesting things.

Two new companions have also been added. An air genasi wizard/swashbuckler/swift-blade and an earth genasi fighter/elemental warrior. They are traveling companions from Sigil, so the air genasi will use a fair amount of Planescape chant. However, the earth genasi is a mute, though he does have a good repertoire of disapproving facial expression and cold stares.

I am still working on finishing up the plot conversations for the home-bases, once they are done I will move onto a sidequest that I have been planning for quite a while now. This sidequest will conclude the Horgath Saga. He is a Fallen Paladin of Mystra introduced in the Halloween Project. In the SOZ Holiday project I showed Horgath's death at the hands of his former lover, the evil Drow Conjurer. In the up coming community project I have created a short quest where the player will witness the initial betrayal of the Drow Conjurer and Horgath's fall from grace. This side quest has been long in the making and I look forward to concluding that story. The other short stories aren't necessary but will provided a bonus back story for players.

I will also be eventually putting together the sidequest for the dark amulet found in the River Reaching area in chapter 1. Most likely a player won't be able to access it until chapter 3, but some players may be ready sooner, so I figure I should have it done.

That is a quick overview of what is happening. I still have a bunch of work to do, but it is moving forward. As I think of more interesting things I will post here. As the title suggest this will be a sporadic update, but I will keep the community posted the status of the project.

Now onto everyone's favorite: screenshots. Some of these may have been posted in previous post but
here they are again.

Quite the opposite of the last. Still needs some touch up, the obscene stretching on the pillar are a bit much. I also need to create a black with star fx to cover the bottom fog when looking down.

Ogre camp. Ogre mage should be a bit familiar to chapter 1 players.

There it is for now.

**edit:: apparently these forums don't like to have large text cut and paste from open office.**

Can we get bigger pics?

Also, it should probably be Flensing Gauntlets (not "fleshing"). :-)

Pictures a bit bigger, sizing is a bit off and stretching them. Added links to the images so they can be looked at in picasa.
Thanks for the gauntlet spot, will be correcting blueprint.

The pics don't have to be giant here (I like keeping them proportional), but linking to larger is nice.

Is that a shot of my map projection style "OM" in your picasa album? Will Risen Hero be using that style?

The map projection is Path of Evil. I took a screen shot of my evil party standing onto the area that Chapter 1 takes place in. I laughed when what took an entire campaign to cross in my game was crossed in less than 2 seconds in PoE.

Hmm, yeah, maybe I should have made months pass between entering each OM area.

Evil characters take less time dawdling about than their good counterparts and their do-goodery.

The merchant/item listing for Risen Hero chapter two promises lots of evil doing possibilities.

The main character is the protagonist (hero), but they may confront the big bad antagonist how they choose. There are plenty of good and very evil potential allies.

This is a bit of a spoiler, but oh well:

I am using the blood wars, demon vs devil,  to help create a evil approach to this game as well as challenge the black and white morals of good vs evil. The main bad guy will be aligned with one side and this will allow you to recieve help from the opposite side.

I am trying to create the game so a player will have a hard time choosing to be completely good or evil and only recieving help from their chosen alignment. If you want to go down an evil path you will still have to take some help from the good guys. While the righteous player may need to accept some help from an evil NPC or group of NPCs to stop a greater evil. Being nuetral may seem the easiest solution, but by choosing a side benifits and prehaps special powers will be provided (think Balder's Gate, but only cooler).

Kamal for your next project you could just make evil versions of everyone else's modules. Lute Villain, the One-Eyed God's Saga, For the Cult of the Reptile God, Planescape: The Shaper of Nightmare... the possibilities go on...

Risen Hero chapter 1 provides a story based rationale for playing evil. I don't know how many others do.

HEY ITS ANOTHER UPDATE!!!     -WOO-HOO   :o
(If you can't maintain that level of excitement that is ok.)

Over the past several weeks there has been a toolset explosion going on here in Risen Hero-Ville. The ogre camp has been finished, except for 1 minor conversation, and it is really nothing more than a fun joke. A few more plot conversations have also been chipped away at.

I have started a secret tomb complex in the Sunset Mountains, near the monastery. A bit of a spoiler here, but if you can remember when chapter 2 is released good for you. This area is unlocked by helping the bleeding man at the monastery in chapter 1. Upon returning to the monastery in the second chapter he will be cured and hunting game for the monks to eat. He will tell you of this area he found and it will appear on the world map for you to explore. I had planned on this area opening up, but didn't know what was going to be there. For the first time I searched through the prefab areas. This was a change for me the only other areas that I have not created are the swamp overland map combat areas, I took those from SOZ and Wyrin's WPM.

After searching mountain prefabs I found one that had several ruins and made a perfect series of tombs. With tombs that gave me two types of foes, undead and grave robbers. So there it was, in the exterior there would be a group of territorial grave robbers then five tombs to loot. Like any good area there needed to be some overall miniplot. I have already overused the trapped lich and have plans for an undead cult later on, so a bit of creativity was needed. Digging through different books I discovered the Flayed Man (Secret College of Necromancy). Using a death knight Chaos Wielder's zombie skins gave him a fleshy VFX and the shirtless saga gave him only a loincloth   -Boom-    a guy with no skin.

Gnome Ranger and Ax Beak Animal Companion/Mount. -Now that Hellfire is back he can turn his axbeak into a halfling/gnome mount right................

For the tombs I found 3 prefabs that I liked, leaving me 2 more to create. Not wanting to fall into a cliche undead I looked to created  fun unique monsters in addition to the final mini-boss. in searching, I found undead children to be a good starting point. Again in the Secret College of Necromancy, I turned the NWN2 girl and boy into pasty creatures call slaymates. Undead children seeking revenge for their caregiver's miss-actions/neglect that lead to their death. From the Tomb of Horrors I found the Dread Waif, even though it is a fey, it fit nicely with the killer children.

600x300https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-dEvzdWDOh68/TyGzwHIrQFI/AAAAAAAAAyg/SGZDnl0gBhQ/s800/NWN2_SS_012312_203138.jpg[/img]

The ghoul portrait has been removed from the Waif.

600x300https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-AO7B3xwoF7A/TyGzgqgwOUI/AAAAAAAAAx4/QMITLIdvcMA/s800/NWN2_SS_012412_120442.jpg[/img]

This is a slaymate blueprint, she is used for a lost child. At the end of the conversation, she turns translucent
and runs into the opposite wall.

One other creature I decided to add is the allip. I have reskinned a wraith (adding a second cloth armor, no 2da change). I removed the hood and a few floating cloth pieces and made it a lot more rippedup and see through. Take a look and offer any suggestions to improve it.

600x300https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/--XHN3-UxjbU/TyGzicTCblI/AAAAAAAAAyA/iZieUzBa3jQ/s800/NWN2_SS_012612_144119.jpg[/img]

After any suggestions on how to improve this, anyone who wants this Allip, I will be more than happy to pass it on.

I am still considering this, but I may also create a specter. In playing around creating the allip I started making glow maps. With a light yellow glow map the wraith is transformed into a completely different creature. It is a bit more work as a few of the cloth appendages need to be removed to make it look like a glowing/floating spirit instead of a yellow wraith.  -No screen shots, so deal with it-

Another creature I am hoping to include is a vampiric Illithid. I have written a on hit script for it tentacles. There will be a grapple check (d20+base attack+str Modifier-(4) for small stature feat) vs the opponent same formula for each hit. If a grapple hit is made a 4d constitution drain will be applied and the illithid will heal 5hp. If 4 consecutive hits are made agianst the same opponent a d6 intelligence drain will occur with a 10hp gain to the illithid. Once the int reaches 0 the player will die. Unfortunately this creature doesn't look as nice as I would like it to but it is the bet I can do. I used Johnny Ree's Vampire Ghoul with a VFX adding the mind flayer head. This isn't perfect as the head and body don't perfectly line up and the ghouls head will clip through the mind flayer head.

600x300https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Y18fE0GtDkI/TyGzmDlimRI/AAAAAAAAAyY/XeC1oUo85-I/s800/NWN2_SS_012612_150518.jpg[/img]

This one looks really good

600x300https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/--olrLOxZSRw/TyGzlXyFkpI/AAAAAAAAAyQ/1Pjb3RxKZtI/s800/NWN2_SS_012612_150504.jpg[/img]

This is the ghoul head clipping through the rightside/back of the mind flayer head.
The important thing to remember is only attack these things from the left..........

So that is it for now. I'm making fun undead tombs that will kill many would be adventurers.

edit:
1st edit making the correct pictures link back to the same picture.   -Removed the picture-

2nd edit links were correct but no pictures....lets see if I can get this without a third edit.  -Removed everything!-

3rd Edit: Starting all over with pics.....Almost got it but is' good enough. Clicking on the picture won't work but I've got a link below it.  -Close enought, I'm calling its quits-

4th edit: Everything is working right. Just needced to leave it alone for a while,

Your links are all messed up when I hit quote and turned on bbcode so I could see them.

This is the correct format, replacing the z in urz and in imz with l and g. The http://... should be the same in both

The heads allow you to do a little more with some creatures, but is not quite perfect.

Visually: The head and body texture don't line up so there is a definite seam and animations can be off so it grows and shrinks as the NPC does stuff. Also you are dealing the existing model under the VFX head and it will clip through the trick is to adjust the x:y:z so the clipping is on the back of the head and not the on the face.

In the toolset: I have found that the game has trouble with these and I'm guessing the missing bodies. You can't select the model by clicking on it, you either need to drag and select or select the NPC through the area content tab. In play testing I have not found any issues selecting the NPC in game, though it will need a custom portrait as the VFX won't show up in it and it will have a ghoul head.

While not perfect I am fairly happy with the VFX head and will be using it. I hope that players will find these visual compromises to be ok. This is the only way that I can add new and exciting creatures for the player to find and of course kill.

I have been looking through jestemwldzimierz stuff and that is where I got the idea of merging models to create new creatures. He has definately made some interesting things and anyone creating a module in the Abyss or Nine Hells will have some great blueprints.

The exterior is Magic Wisp Mountain Tombs. It does need a little work with the textures, but over all is a decent area. With a few modifications it should be good.

Here it is. Another update after 7 months. . . (I need to get a little better at this update thing)

Below are a few screen shots of a Helmite camp I have been working on. It is located on the edge of a swamp and uses the same custom lighting for the rest of the swamps in this chapter.

A malevolent acquaintance of the player has charged them with killing the helmites and framing another group for their murder. This quest will be given to any character regardless of their alignment. Evil characters will get it because they will likely do it and good characters will get it in the hopes of currupting them. There will be 1 "good" way of completeing the quest and 3 "evil" ways. With the good way the Helmites live and the evil ways they will all die. While a character can go and hack their way through the camp it will be a difficult battle with the number of helmites wandering around. There are a number of fighters and clerics and four paladins. The quest will not be completed for any of the evil paths until the framing is done. So chopping of the commanders head with no other plans will not give the player the quest reward.

The helmites wear plate armor from the Acme Full Metal Packet, the halberds also come from that pack. While the armor is all similiar each class has their own variation. The fighters and clerics were helmets to help conceal the clone effect. Each of the four paladin are unique.

The entrance to the Helmite camp and the Halberd wielding guard wanting to know what you are doing in the camp. Not the friendliest of guards, he will be more than happy to kill you if you insult him or the other Helmites.

A section of the camp. Male and female helmite fighters and clerics hangout at the campfire doing random immobile annimations. While some may look at little wierd at times it is a simple way to add a little life to NPCs standing around.

Here is the camp's commander. There is another halberd guard here. She just throws out random one-liners when you talk to her.

The edge of the camp and the start of the swamp. Right now it is raining in the camp. I have the weather set to frequent light rain. Those kngihts have to have some serious armor chafing going on.

NEAT! About how close to finished is this.
