I know you get critical hits if you backstab someone with a melee weapon or hit them while you are stealthed. I've heard conflicting reports in terms of bows. Do bows grant an auto crit if you are stealthed? I'm quite sure, though, that you can't hit them from behind to get a backstab with a bow.

Basically, what I'm asking is this. Do archers have any real reason to use stealth?

I'd... prefer a more complex answer.

Basically, if you're in stealth, you shoot at them, and it's an automatic critical hit. However, if you don't know, backstabs aren't achieveable with ranged weapons (for obvious reasons).

Finally, a clear answer. :) Thanks. So attacking from stealth with a bow would be quite useful then.

The attack bonus isn't what it is most useful for. It's most useful feature by far is the ability to stealth and run to the back of the battlefield when you're getting smacked by too many melee enemies. The extra crit is just icing on the cake. =]

If you are flanking, your rogue will get something like a +10 attack bonus (+20 with combat movement), so flanking is still useful for archers.

Stealth is probably the most powerful ability in the game for an archer. The chance to enter stealth is partially based on how far you are from enemies--an archer tends to be far away. You can get instant criticals (if the shot hits), you can take your sweet time with long aiming shots like pinning and scattershot when pulling, you can walk through the enemy lines and disarm all their traps, plant your own traps, and you can instantly lose aggro when you need to.

This is, by the way, also the main reason why a Rogue Archer is far superior to a Warrior Archer.

Combat Stealth is awesome. And you get a free initiate with Scattershot or Arrow of Slaying, allowing you to start in a perfect position (possibly onehitting a mage before the battle even started)
