Inspired by robertm2's most recent poll, I decided to make a thread dedicated to movies about the final frontier. There are a lot of movies set in space - and some of them are even good. Which ones, I wonder?

For me, these two movies immediately come to mind:

The Fifth Element.

It's fantastical, has plenty of good humor, and doesn't take itself too seriously in the realm of Sci-Fi.

As an FYI for those who need a recap on the outer space movies out there, you can check this.

Great stuff already here on the list...I love 2001, The Fifth Element, The Star Trek movies (except the last one...I really didn't see the need to Retcon an already rich Canon and the main villian left me really meh)

I have to add Moon, probably the best Science Fiction movie I've seen in a very long time...and since it takes place on the moon..that makes it a Space Movie.

Every single ship on that picture is from Battlestar Galactica.

Serenity.
Sunshine.
Star Wars.
Star Trek (the new one - I really enjoyed it).
Spaceballs.
Moon.
Wall-E.

I still haven't seen Alien or Aliens. I really want to, but just never get around to it.

Heh. There's all kinds of other sci-fi ships that turn up during Battlestar Galactica during shots of the fleet. That picture has a whole bunch more I didn't spot during the series, also.

From what I can tell, though there's probably a few more in that picture I just don't recognise:

Serenity, from Firefly/Serenity.
Red Dwarf, from Red Dwarf.
The Enterprise, from Star Trek.
The Millenium Falcon, from Star Wars.
The ship from 'A Space Oddessy'.
What appears to be a 20th Century naval battleship. In space.
And though I'm not sure if it's on the screen, the Kodiak from Command and Conquer: Tiberian Sun shows up at one point in the series.

Dark Star (1974, directed by John Carpenter and co-written with Dan O'Bannon).

Plan 9 from Outer Space (1959, by Edward D. Wood, Jr). The movie is so bad that it becomes entertaining. Some consider it the worst movie of all time, which gave it cult status.
