And don't forget about the whole thing about Wardens not being able to hold any titles or anything like that...

True. But yet Alistair can still be King, plus the Wardens at Weisshaupt apparently 'rule' the whole of the Anderfels. Seems to me that the Wardens are hypocrites and only abide by their own rules when it suits them

This! Precisely why I'm glad BioWare isn't bringing the Warden back. In theory, it's a great cause to get behind, but a couple of times through the rinse and you see just how unsavory they really are. I've said it once and I'll say it again. The Wardens need an enema!

I've fanfic'd in my mind how my Human Noble (who never wanted to be a Warden) would respond to Wardens coming from Weisshaupt to tell him what's what after killing the Archdemon... He ceremoniously tells them to *sod off*. He did his duty and now he's going to reclaim what was lost/taken from his family.

A illegitimate Theirin can take the throne by himself, but a male or female Cousland(and the Couslands are 2nd in power to the King) cannot.

I guess you could force them to make you their King/Queen. If they don't, the Warden will NOT kill the Archdemon and the nobles will be eradicated. I'm actually still on my first playthough and at the "Battle of Denerim" and hope I can at least call the nobles hypocritical racist dogs after everything else is done. But then we would be no better than Loghain

This is a very relevant point. To me playing a human noble and the son/daughter of one of only two teyrns in the Kingdom, my first priority would be to ensure my family's honour and future is secured. Stuff the warden's and the Ostagar fight. What's the point of being part of it if there is nothing to come back to? I'd become a warden AFTER I'd found Fergus and sorted out family business. Besides with Howe's forces also missing from Ostagar, and Highever's how can the king even contemplate taking the fight to the darkspawn?Unless he is a complete dimwit (possible) he must know he is heading for defeat with the numbers at his disposal, yet he still uses an attack based strategy instead of a defensive one. Charging superior numbers in broken formation is just like sticking your head in a mincer - you just get ground into dogmeat!

Duncan's only choice is to advise the king to retreat and consolidate while he and his wardens fight a rearguard action - the warden sacrifice That way they prove their dedication!
