You missed the krogan scientist? He's got a shop and everything. His room's at the back, near the krogan mechanic fixing up the tomkah.CrutchCricket wrote...

Holy **** totally missed that guy! And my opportunity to punch a pyjack (sorry pyjack masters!). This warrants a new playthrough immediately.
Make sure you wait to buy from him till after you finish Grunt's trials. He''ll give you a discount if I remember correctly. (something to do with the Shamen awarding Shep with one of his creations)

I don't believe Liara suffered any contrivances to keep her in. She's one of only three squadmates (admittedly including DLC) to be on the team for both earlier games, and I can't imagine she'd really want to not stay close to Shepard to ensure that she doesn't die this time. In any case, the location of the Hagalaz base was compromised by Cerberus, so she'd have to leave anyway when Cerberus turned on the galaxy. Not only that, she'd probably need to stay mobile because people would likely be after her head. When you factor in the Normandy's excellent (AI) computer system, there's no reason for her to not be on the Normandy.
I agree, if anything the Shadow Broker base was a contrivance to keep her out of the rest of the game after finishing LotSB.
There is really no reason why the Broker has to remain on the base at all times. The Yahg probably had to mostly for the simple reason of being a Yahg. It was fairly easy for Liara to replace him, because the power of the broker lies in the network, almost no one knows the true identity, so as long as the technical issues of redirecting the information flow can be solved, there is no good reason for her to remain on the base, once she is familar enough with the network.
Regardless how anyone's Shepard feels about Liara, she admires her. Giving the circumstances, she would most defintately want to be in this fight.
Feron was a personal debt weighing on her conscience, a situation she needed to resolve for herself, so it was more important to her than Shepard at that point in time, just like saving Shepard was before that.
The collector threat was insignificant compared to the threat of the reapers, It did not outweigh this personal need.
In this conflict there is really no safe place in the galaxy, the safest place might actually be aboard the Normandy.
Based on who she is, I'd say, Liara would want to be there, wether or not the base has been compromised by Cerberus.

Since any relevant and serious discussion about the topic flew out the window a few pages back I believe this thread should be locked.
To be honest - this thread has no real relevance to begin with. All it succeeded in doing was driving a wedge deeper into the varying fan-bases. Since BW has already decided to include Liara as a squadmate, there is no need to come up a viable reason for it. What is done is done.

Unlike in ME2, where you set out with the specific goal of recruiting "the best of the best", in ME1 the only reason to seek out Liara was because of her connection to Benezia. What we find is a secluded, socially awkward archeologist who is then added to your squad without question and turns out to be very useful in combat. Not all archeologists are Indiana Jones, you know.
Tali suffers from a similar problem (she's an engineer, not a soldier; and I'm talking occupation rather than class here), but at least she demonstrates her proficiency before you recruit her (in the hallway fight with Saren's thugs) and we don't know what kind of training she got before going on her pilgrimage. Liara has spent the last fifty years on dig sites, so there's no real reason for her to have any combat proficiency other than her natural biotic skill as an asari.
This is not a slight against the character. I like Liara, I'm glad she'll have a big part in ME3. But this is just one of those cases where RPG conventions and reality clash.

If I may attempt a serious interjection here, I've always felt that out of all the random bystanders that you pick up in ME1, Liara was the least likely to actually have any useful combat skills.

The real reason why I quit my archeological studies after only two semesters - No one handed me a whip or a hat.
on-topic:
"And her biotics will come in handy!" This is Wrex's assessment of Liara, you know Wrex, the experienced merc who has biotic powers himself. (quoted from memory)

Alone. During which time she was attacked from time to time by pirates and the like. And she's never been in a situation before Therum that her biotics couldn't handle. She's quite formidable, especially seen in ME2 where she can more than keep up with the other (extremely powerful) squad adepts.Liara has spent the last fifty years on dig sites, so there's no real reason for her to have any combat proficiency other than her natural biotic skill as an asari.
Liara's genius is interesting; her skills tend to be somewhat narrow, but what she focuses on, she's excellent at. It definitely worked with archeology and information brokering, and I suspect she did the same for biotics when she was younger, possibly having them as a secondary focus through the years. She doesn't seem to have bothered with that much weapons training, so she'd have more focus on that than a typical commando.
