Hello!
I did a search for this issue in the boards and didn't see it referenced anywhere. I recently got the Steam version of Mass Effect and am running it on Windows XP. The audio is playing, but all of the character dialogue is being drowned out by the background noises. I adjusted the sound settings in the options menu (dialogue - 100%, music - 35%, sound effects - 35%). It's made the menu music quiet, but the background noise in the game is still so loud that I can barely hear the characters speak and had to turn on subtitles. I've never encountered this problem with any other game and my speakers are working fine with everything else. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there anything I can do to fix it?
Thanks for the help!

Sound card? What kind of speaker setup do you have? Stereo, 5.1, 7.1?
Often missing or unclear dialog is caused by playing a game with surround sound on a stereo setup and the voices would normally come out of the central speakers which a stereo setup does not have. However, Mass Effect 1 had a major problem in the PC port and that is that surround sound is only supported on sound cards with EAX. So does your sound card support EAX?
