Oh, I suppose that one question does only apply to certain countries.

Agreed on all points. And Croatia's in eastern Europe, right?

Balkans/Southeastern Europe actually.

It's fine, I "Strongly Agree" :P

That could apply to countries in Europe, probably.

I liked this one "from each according to his ability, to each according to his need"

That phrase is from Karl Marx, in case you didn't know.

I thought it sounded familiar, and also a little socialist.

I like the basic idea behind it, not so much the implicit redistributionism that comes with it, not to mention that extreme logistical difficulties in actually implementing it (as our friends in the former USSR demonstrated by eternally waiting in lines for products there were always shortages of).

You know, I just realized how strange the BSN is; we all practically murder each other over whose favourite video game character is better, but bring up politics and we somehow all get along. Very peculiar.

That IS bizarre. But think about who's presently here, too: none of us are very confrontational.

I can't think of anything relevant to say myself, so let's have a quote from The Economist.

"Every time someone tells you to “be realistic” they are asking you to compromise your ideals."

Depends on the opinion.
Guess ppl know the current state of the world is ... FUBAR tbh.
We can't continue living like we're used to anymore. I'm not sure how - and what - needs to change to give mankind a future. Right now we're on best path to become like the Drell: an overcrowded world stripped of any resources.

I'm one of the more active fighters for a project that allows us to leave this world, however, no influence.

Whaaaatever ...

We've actually found a few planets that are twins to ours. All we need is the funding to start the 20 year program we'd need to plan to leaving this rock and we'd most likely have twice as much space or more, with more resources to use up in a few hundred years.

I don't see why people think that our problems will be solved by leaving Earth. We need to FIX what we're doing: we'll just do the same to another planet.

I think we shouldn't really think of "using resources up" but more of "using resources efficiently". I'm not a green one here ... I just think efficiency is a good trait, and if it prevents damage to environment, then it's a good thing.

I don't think we can do this in 20 years, 50 years sounds like a good time window. First of all we need to construct a space yard - big multigeneration ships can't be constructed on Earth. Some of the needed resources can be taken from the moon, so we need a mine & smelting works there. Also we need fusion energy first.

50 years from now on. I doubt mankind will make it that far, we're pretty much running out of space & resources right now, re-growing and non-growing as well.

The only two solutions I can see in that case are ethically not acceptable. Either birth control (1 per family) or reduction of genepool by approx 75%.
This world can not bear 7 billion people, not even if they're living without electronics and technology.
That's what the "green guys" don't wanna realize: we're simply too many.

Well that's good. Nice to know even authoritarian fans of police states like Team Dextro.

I agree in more efficient use of resources, but 7 billion is still too many for this planet. Kepler 22b is large enough for us, and I think a new planet would be a good start for that efficiency to take full force. But that's another reason I believe in big government. Government can enforce green initiatives without the corrupting profit motive that corporations who jumped on the green wagon have.

You know, that was actually in one of the readings for my politics class (the final for which I probably ought to be studying); how authoritarian government was needed to promote green initiatives, as democracy isn't doing the job. Of course, it then followed up by saying a form of green anarchy could work too, so it wasn't very conclusive.

Kepler 22b is too far away (600 lightyears). Even if we could accellerate a starship to 10% of lightspeed (which is quite unlikely already), it will need 6000 years to reach said planet.

Also it has two and a half times the diameter of Earth. Don't you think gravity scales too? I bet that planet is fine for Elcor, but not for us - except density of said planet is reduced so the planet's gravity isn't much higher than 1.5g (which means if you have a weight of 80 kilos on Earth you'll weigh 120 kilos on that planet). Also athmosphere pressure is important: it shouldn't be much bigger than 1.2 times of standard pressure on Earth.
