I'm about to start a new shapeshifter mage, designed to both cast and shift.  Unfortunately the information about Shapeshifters is conflicting.  One guide I read says shapes' stats are based off of the caster's magic stat.  Another claims they are based purely on the caster's strength score.  What is the reality?

I also want to have a better understanding of how weapon damage interacts with shapeshifting.  Some people say to use a staff so you never miss, others say a big two handed weapon.  If I was to choose a staff, would it indeed never miss while I was shifted?  Would the Staff Focus talent add to my shifted damage in that case?

Thanks a bunch.  I am using CT mod so the class should be pretty fun to play.  I just want to know how to play it before I jump in.

Yes there is a bug that means spell power is not used in your form, only strength is. I don't use combat tactics, but I would read up and see if they fixed the bug. Though it really depends on your weapon. Two handed weapon reports higher damage, but the armor penetration of the staff usually upsets this.

Weapon Dmg has no effect on spider, bear or swarm dmg. It does not stack and it strictly based off strength. Either with the forms boost if your strength is lower OR if your strength is higher then boost, it uses that value.

Example: You have strength of 18. Using Bear with a high spellscore boosts you to 24. Well Bear dmg would be based off 24. But if you have say 26 with the same spellscore, then bear dmg would be based off 26 sense your base atrribute for strength is above the cap of 24.

If you equip any weapon it does not effect that dmg number. I have tested this over and over and it does not stack. You do gain the "Green" bonuses or a bonus from runes which carry over to the forms.

Bear and Spider always raise armor penatration 4 or 5 points only. That will always be added to the weapons armor penatration level. Staff of Magister Lord has 42 I think and if I shapeshift I get 47.

Also Bear is really tanky and is extremely underestimated. =D

I can see where the confusion comes from. It sounds to me as if the spellpower thing isn't a bug, because your spellpower increases your form's stats. I can also see why a person might want to build with tons of innate strength, because the amount of strength you get from spellpower would be lower than if you just pumped up your strength.

The mod I was referencing is Combat Tweaks. It's great. I can't recommend it highly enough, especially with the increased difficulty settings you can add, which go a long way toward making the game interesting front to back.

How do you build an effective bear tank? Why do people say that Morrigan makes a terrible shapeshifter?

Thanks for the input!

Is that still in effect? TBastian's excellent post on Shapeshifting, 11 months ago, indicates that you need only Magic as a Shapeshifter. In fact, that's one of the attractions of the class, that you can put everything into your spellpower stat.

The other guides linked in my Forum Roundup of class Guides agree. I haven't run the numbers myself, but it seems there's a good chance that now Magic is the primary stat for a shapeshifter.

That is one of the two guides I read, CBGB. It seems to be correct.

As a shapeshifter, how do you fix the annoying and disgusting looking bug whereby the hero remains in a distorted version of the last animal form visually when shifting back into human form? This is driving me nuts, especially when a conversation is initiated by an NPC just as combat ends, forcing a shift that may or may not be gross looking.

I don't have swarm form yet, but if I shift from spider to human, some of the time I look like a spider but tipped up on its edge, as if climbing a wall. If I shift from bear to human, I appear as a bear torso with front legs weirdly crossed over one another and the back legs rising upward and toward the head, coming out of the bear's rear end.

I can end the graphic problem by opening inventory. Opening the class screen though won't do it. I think inventory must do some sort of gear test or something that pops it back into the right mode. This of course does nothing if a conversation starts at the end of combat when I have been shifted.
