I tried all of the suggestions to the problem where party members stop following you (in the post stickied in this forum) to no avail. I decided to try to talk to the character in question. (Bevril. This was just after going through the first portal, leaving the wheat field.) Among other things, he said he was hesitant about continuing. I talked to him about everything there was to talk tim about and then I tried to get him to follow me again. (Moving ahead and waiting for him to follow.) He still didn't move, but then I tried the command to guard me again and he resumed following me!
I hope this helps someone else.
