So, I'm confused here. Perhaps someone can clear this up:

I bought the PC version of Mass Effect way back (collectors edition) in addition to my XBox version. I finished the XBox version ages ago, but finished a PC playthrough of ME1 and went to ME2. So I installed ME2 from the discs...pulled the discs out, put them away and went to play the game...and no dice. Just...a CD Check.

So I try launching from Origin. No dice. So you're telling me that, I can download the game through origin and it'll require no CD to be in the drive...but if I install the game from disc, then I need a CD. Now, I understand ME2 predates Origin...but it does not predate the EADM. So what gives? Why can't we have a patch that allows us to play the game if Origin is running? My only solution is to uninstall, download on origin and reinstall....which is total crap.

An understanding of how Windows registry works would be of use to you about now.

When you install from disk, it writes into the system registry as disk being the source version. Registering with Origin does nothing to change this initial registry setting.

So your complaint lies with how EA's Origin fails to change this registry key, and not with thegame itself.
Take it up with EA.

I can confirm that with ME2 a disc installation requires booting the game from the disc. To get it to run without disc you have to uninstall it, then download and install it through Origin.

Wait, the only protection they have is a regkey value? Where is it in the hive? And yes, I'm intimately familiar with the Windows registry hive...and the WinCE registry hive.

I appreciate them having no securom or other nonsense, but it's still an annoyance. And my complaint stands: a feature should be taken for Origin to allow a disc installed game to be run with no disc. To me, Origin just feels like some terrible system cobbled together to give EA a service.

Thanks - I did this and found it to work.
