Having only played a female Shepard, I can only guess as to how the mechanics of sex worked with Tali. I had assumed it worked similar to shutting down "infected" areas and keeping them sealed off from the rest of the suit, etc. to reduce infection, and then the parallels she drew between her suit and a spaceship. Thus the joke was spawned.
