One thing I've always liked about Bioware games is their replayability. Just a few months ago I dusted off and played through Jade Empire, and both ME and ME2 gave me easily a half dozen replays each. Bioware stories have always made me want to keep coming back, either to play alternate routes (e.g. KOTOR darkside/lightside) or just becasue I'd like to replay a story I enjoy.

I have no such desire to replay DA2. Whenever I (rarely) consider doing so I run into a huge list of reasons not to; you'll have to deal with Anders, Orsino and Meredith going crazy again, I think, not to mention the railroads that lead to Hawke losing their family. Hawke's story not only doesn't excite me (it's basically just run errands for Bartrand/the Viscout/Meredith or Orsino because they tell you to), it actively repulses me. Things happen to guy I barely know in a place I don't care about and then he disappears, the end.

DA2 is the only Bioware game I've ever regretted buying. It's the only Bioware story where the characters didn't completely grab me (with exceptions), the setting didn't interest me, and the plot left me angry and feeling let down. Add to that things like strait jacket classes and a frustrating dialogue/persuade system and it's not something I'll be coming back to any time soon, if at all.

I too witnessed the rage, gnashing of teeth and general hostility toward DAII. Hell, I was one of the outraged. No dual wield, isometric view taken away, no origin choices, scaled down this removed that ad infinitum. The demo reinforced my opposition to the changes and I figured that was that, no DAII for me.

However, nearly a year later, a gift card and the ridiculously low price of 19.99 persuaded a change of heart. So honestly what do I think bias aside? Hmmm, Its good, it has its faults... many of them, but good nonetheless. Its not, definitely not DA Origins in any way shape or form. However good it is it still is a disappointment, on many levels: art, story, simplicity, combat, brevity of quests, sparse quest codex updates... i.e. "you found the ring, quest over" or something of the sort.

Brief comparison to my DA O experience:

I think a quarter a way through DA O I had this sudden feeling of nostalgic melancholy. The salient thought; "this story/game will end all to soon." Ive only had that experience once before except it was when I first read The Fellowship of the Ring. High praise, I know, but its the truth. There were brief glimpses of emotional attachment in DA II, but nothing comparable to my Origins experience.

My biggest beef is with the combat. I found myself heavily annoyed with the wave tactic .I played on Hard. Waves serve mostly to elongate the combat, which makes combat somewhat tedious and overstreched. It may not have been half that bad of a tact if it wasnt the impulse in most if not all combat sequences.

So my summary? DA II is above average, yet flawed, and falls short of it predecessor.

One year later? I've officially played DA2 more times than DAO. I like the characters better than the ones in DAO, and the gameplay is faster and more seamless. Yup. Haters gonna hate, but sorry, can't hear you over the sound of me playing DA2 again right now.

Just wrote a topic about DA2 vs DA:O but I'll just say this in here.

I actually find myself disagreeing with every problem people have with DA2...

I personally love the fact that it's all set in one place (you get to see your actions and their consequences year after year, and people recognize you, which is always kinda cool :P)

I find the combat better, I enjoy when something actually happens the moment I press a button, as opposed to waiting for the pre-rendered animation to finish.

And believe it or not, I like the characters more! It feels like everyone has a different kind of relationship with Hawke, as opposed to all just being "companions brought together to fight against a great evil" like it is in DA:O. These people stick with you for 9 years in Kirkwall, and they all bring a different thing to the group. Varric is the fun guy that everyone loves to be around, Isabela's sexy as all hell, but also is somewhat of the mother of the group, especially to Merrill, who is like the family pet who can tear you apart with a wave of her hand...something's wrong with that girl...

Anyways, love DA2 and DA:O...in that order!

I had a long respone to this ready to go when the dang thing made me sign in again and it didn't save my response so I will try to give a briefer version of what I said.

Basicaly I said that DA 2 was a good game but not the masterpiece DAO was. I felt the combat in DA 2 was as the same time over the top and cartoony but more responsive and I felt the battles had better spacing DA 2 and I like the control I had over my party (I could move a mage out of harms way by moving the marker around and allowing me to move my team round without having to individualy control them. I like that).

I felt the story was good at times but disjointed at other times. Act 2 was great but Act 3 kind of fizzled. While the game did a decent job of building up the mage/templar conflict in the first two acts it kind of fizzled in Act 3 because the main quests were so few before the end game initiated (doing the quests Anders and Sebastion gave us did help to remedy that as they both tied back into the mage/templar conflict). I also felt that end of act 3 didn't resolve anything in terms of the mage/templar conflict the battle plays out the same no matter what side you pick and it basicaly showed Meredith self destructing but it did not address the underlying tension between mages and templars. I know it was the start of the mage/templar war but I didn't get the feeling of anything changing. That is why I would like to see an expansion that takes place in the months following act 3 . The mage/templar war needs more context.

The biggest advantage I felt DAO had over DA 2 was the exploration. DA 2 had way more repeating areas (oh look I am in this mansion for the tenth time). In DAO it was great exploring Tevinter ruins or long abandoned dwarven thaigs in the deep roads or finding trouble in denerim's back alleys, etc... I also did not like the fact thst I could not change my squad's gear, I understand bioware's "iconic look" reasoning but I am not completely buying it. It could have been easy to implement gear that would have allowed Aveline or Isabela to maintain their look without sticking them in the same thing for three acts.

One area that I feel DA 2 shined in was the DLC as I felt both Legacy and MoTA contributed greatly to series lore and they addressed some issues the main game had (mainly how waves of enemies are handled and helped address the problem of repetitive areas) In my opinion they improved the game greatly.

My overall verdict of DA 2 was that it was a good game but not a great game. Fun to play but could have been better. Though I find in these forums if you say you liked the game you will get labeled as a "biodrone" or "fanboy" even if you still list criticisms you have of it.

I'm new to the forums, and was pretty bored tonight so I went back and looked at some of the posts in the Origins board as soon as DA2 came out...and I was shocked! Shocked I say!

People freaking loved it...before the world was swamped with negative reviews, and before these forums were flooded with people picking apart every portion of the game, people loved it! And then over time people started to dislike it, and then hate it.

So my question is this, have we ruined the game for ourselves by reading all of these negative reviews? I just finished DA2 last week (after beating DA:O the week before) and without reading a single review beforehand, I loved the sequel more than the original.

So what about you? How many reviews did YOU read before playing the game?

A couple of reviews,  I based my opinion of the game from playing it.  I knew I liked it but I also knew it wasn't Origins.   I am not the type of person to get nostalgic for older games either.  More often than not I will like the sequel better than the original.  This time however it was the excetion.  DAO felt like the journey of a lifetime while DA 2 felt like a fun summer.  DA 2 was still fun but pales when compared to DAO.

I followed the hype on the forums, I played the demo and gave the release version a try...it all was terribly disappointing to me in a number of ways. I have played Bioware games since the release of BG 1 and enjoyed most of them. They have changed quite a bit in how they make games. I hope the best for the company but am unsure I'll be playing too many other Bioware games if they keep going along this path. Much has been lost and I'm not sure they will ever return to it, but only time will tell.

I did not read any reviews beforehand. I went out and bough the game right out of the shelves when it came out. That was because I enjoyed DAO so much.
However, DA2 was such a huge disappointment to me that I did something I have never done. I signed into this forum just to let Bio to know how big my disappointment was. That was my sole reason for coming here, not the reviews (which I started to read afterwards to see if people were as disappointed as I was).

I´m a long time Bio fan but this I have to say was not something I would have spent my money on if I had knew.

Still the same far cry from DAO. I thought the DLC would be better but other then fixing the repeating environments it's still mediocre.

There is only so much DLC can address.  They still have to work with the same engine they built for the main game, that part is unavoidable.  Personaly I liked how the DLC has handled story, environments, and how they handle enemy waves.
