Tali and Legion hands down.....no other NPC or squad member can come even close to the level of awesomeness of those two. Now I know that some(a lot) of months back BioWare said that Legion would only play a minor role in ME3 and implied he won't be a full time squad member but a lot of things can and probably did change since then and I am hoping that this is one of them. BioWare HAS to realize that none of the other squad members across both ME1 and ME2 with the exception of Tali can ever hope to be as awesome.

Then you should keep Tali away from the battle. Dunno why, but she had a tendency to die in my playthroughs. Same for Garrus.

For me it was Jacob... second place to Mordin and then Thane. When I had Tali and Grunt, I almost didn't need to fight.

I mean, think about it. How is it that Shepard is so damn persuasive and nigh-unkillable? The Apple. And what are Cerberus goals? To further and control man's evolution at any costs. They're Templars, simple as that.
