Been hearing great things about this game for ages and finally brought it two days ago. It won't install. I've searched the internet for solutions and even the apparently official BioWare one doesn't work. Details follow...

The installer says there is a problem with saferun.exe, retry does nothing and ignore brings up the same problem with saferun.dll, when you ignore that the installer gets an error and refuses to finish.

I found this official solution: http://ve3d.ign.com/...all-Mass-Effect

But when extracting the .rar files many of the files were broken or corrupt. When I tried to move to the next step the "Mass Effect ™_code.exe" it wants me to use doesn't exist in the folder they specified... or any other. Moving to the next step and in the config there is no repair tab like it mentions. After this the loader shows the play option instead of install, but when you click it and it asks for the CD key it says the key is wrong, even though it is the right one and worked for the installer earlier.

I'm really frustrated. :(

is the best answer found, you can search "saferun" on the on site search engine and it turns up a few more.  Basically it says it is an issue between your drive and the DRM on the disk.  If you have an alternate drive then try it, otherwise try the link.

Tried the solution on that page and tried a different drive: neither worked.

Does this happen to be the Value games edition, if so you may try another copy by returning it as a bad disc. The other alternative is to see if you can dl it from Origin or Steam and get it to work by entering your code and dling.

It is Value Games, I don't think I can return it and Steam refuses to accept the CD key. :(

I'm so frustrated, this is getting ridiculous.

The Value Games edition came out on a horde of dodgy disks, as mcsupersport mentioned. You can try taknig it back to your retailer for another copy, or, contact EA support, explain the situation, and get them to add ME1 under your account so you can download it via Origin.

Ok, so I finally decided to try EA technical support. It wanted an error code, so I had to try and install for the twentieth time. For some reason it actually worked. Only thing different I did was express install instead of custom. A shame as that put it on the drive with less room where videos (such as the cutscenes) always stop start for no reason, but at least it is running now. Hope this helps someone else with the problem.

Yeah, it might solve the compatibility problems, if you have some (did it for me at least concerning the configuration utility!).

You should start a new topic and post a proper problem report.

If English isn't this member's birth language, I suspect that even Babelfish would handle a translation better than the pidgin seen above.
