There's always going to be huge dissent on the top spot. I personally wouldn't have placed Portal 1 so high. I also noticed a distinct lack of either ME1, ME2, BG2, or Planescape: Torment moments.

BG and PS:T deserve to be higher but Mass Effect 1 or 2 do not.

And where's the Cradle from T:DS, surely that deserves a spot.

Well it's less an issue of being higher, as it is more an issue that none of them were there at all. Top 100 definitely allows alot of leeway for any game to make the list, especially if every game only gets one "moment". Perhaps not top ten, but I would probably have had both ME games somewhere on that list.

goose chase? from 8-bit mario bros? never heard of it.

The only "moment" on that list I'm familiar with is entering Rapture in Bioshock.

My list is much better (Though the field of my playing career isn't big)

- Kyle Katarn, Desann and Tavion first confrontation (Jedi Knight II - Also many other epic moments in this game)
- Martin Septim sacrifices himself to end Oblivion's Crisis (Oblivion)
- Shepard talks with a Reaper on Virmire (ME1)
- A.Jensen "I never asked for this"! (Deus Ex: HR)
- Killing Caesar in his Pavilion(Fallout: New Vegas)
- T.I.M Smiling at the end of ME2
- Many other better IGN's list.

1. Aerith's death (Final Fantasy VII)

Why?

Seriously. Why?

Stop it gaming industry/media. Just stop it. The only good thin about Aerith's death is that she died. UGH! When will the gaming media finally catch up to how absolutely awful Final Fantasy VII is?

Here are the best ones I can think of that weren't on the list.

-E-102 Gamma's death (Sonics Adventure)
-Catching MissingNo. (Pokemon Red&Blue)
-Designing Weapons of Mass Destruction (Minecraft)
-Tyrant Rises from Lava Vat and Attacks (Resident Evil 2)
-"You are starting to annoy me!" (Starfox 64)
-Blankflank Ending (Super Filly Adventure)
-Any time a necromorph sneaks up on you (Dead Space)

I mean, holy f-balls! I can think of three infinitely cooler moments in gaming than Aerith's death, WITHOUT even trying too hard:

1.) The baby metroid saving Samus in Super Metroid.

2.)(***SPOILER FOR inFAMOUS***) Finding out that Kessler is Cole from the future.

3. )Landing on the beach in Halo: CE on the Silent Cartographer level.

See? Not even trying! D:<

A turd is greater than Aerith. -___-

4.) The ending to Assasin's Creed II.

5.) Heather dying in her own reflection in Silent Hill 3.

6.) Fighting Phantoon in Metroid: Other M.

7.) Nailing the ending sequence in Mirror's Edge.

8.) The attack on the Citadel in Mass Effect.

9.) Samara fighting Morinth in Mass Effect 2.

10.) Encountering your first dragon in Skyrim.

11.) Beating Alma in Ninja Gaiden.

12.) Finding the Boots of Blinding Speed in Morrowind.

13.) Finding the merchant mudcrab in Morrowind.

All infinitely cooler than Aerith's death. Right off of the top of my head. Bah, I give up on gaming journalism!

You said it, Foxhound. Totally overrated game franchise.

Honestly the list is nothing more than IGN sucking Nintendo's ****.... Nintendo had some great games yes.... but this went overboard.

Entering Rapture does not belong at number 10.... no way.... Revan's reveal should have been in that spot. My jaw litterally dropped when I found out for the first time that I was Revan. The identity crisis hit me like a ton of bricks.

Skyrim isnt even out a whole month yet and it made the list..... you have got to be kidding me.... the return of Deathwing has more significance than that garbage.

Meeting Andrew Ryan trumps entering Rapture for me.

And Metro 2033 and New Vegas have great moments as well.

1. Aerith's death (Final Fantasy VII) -It's a twist that will always be remembered, but not quite #1 to me.

2. Psycho Mantis encounter (Metal Gear Solid) - Fair enough, I suppose. Not quite what I would have chosen, though.

3. Pulling sword from stone (Zelda: Ocarina of Time) - 2nd only to the final fight with Ganon.

4. Mario's goosechase (Super Mario Bros) - .....No.

5. First zombie (Resident Evil 1) - .....Again, No.

6. Encountering the first Colossus (Shadow of the Colossus) - Acceptable answer.

7. Samus takes off her helmut (Metroid) - Surprising for many, but not enough.

8. Stepping onto Halo (Halo) - Alright. I'll accept that answer.

9. Escaping Aperture's Science's lab (Portal) - The entire experience, or just the end? It's hard to call 2 hours a "moment".

10. Entering Rapture (Bioshock) - Why isn't this near #1?

Where is your "conversation" with Master Li after you rescue him, from Jade Empire? I really disliked that game, but it remains a great moment.

Ya giving FF7 the number one spot seems more like a safe choosing by them then an objective choosing.  Kind of like saying "Which moment will give us the least rage posts against it?" :wizard:

It can depend on when you first played/played through it. I'm a FF fan and VII is one of my faves in the series, played back in 1997 when I was only about 7 but even I can tell you it's aged horribly compared to others on the same platform like VIII and IX(Unless on PC, then just VIII). As for the Aerith thing, many who played IX for the first time were about 7 years old or younger, so seeing something like that happen to a character you grow attached to/know would leave a lasting impression. Maybe not so much for older gamers who first played FFVII around that time now. Plus, loads of people like Aerith, she has a huge fanbase.

Of course, I'm assuming a lot here, sorry.

It'd be on the list at any rate, you wouldn't forget something like that. (You certainly don't seem to have forgotten regardless of your opinion)Though I'm not sure about being number 1.

I really liked VIII's opening too.

I think walking into Phendrana Drifts for the first time on Metroid Prime is deserving of a spot.

It was a pretty bad list, Planescape Torment moments and Bioware Game moments should be higher.

The ending of Zelda A Link to the Past too, though that could be nostalgia talking.

"Something-something....IS YOUR GREATEST FLAW!" dun dun duuuun.

Since we're discussing top moments in gaming, I'll throw in my own(in no particular order)

God of War 3 - The Climb to Mount Olympus, and all the set pieces that went into it.
Mother 3 - Sunflowers, or the Mushroom Sequence.
Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne - Ascension.
Bioshock - The Introduction
Mass Effect 2 - Suicide Mission
Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem - Losing your Sanity
Final Fantasy VII - One Winged Angel.
Majora's Mask - The end of the Anju/Kafei quest.
Super Metroid - The Final Boss.
Legend of Zelda: OoT - The Final Boss.
Link to the Past - Entering Dark World.
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - My, you sleep rather soundly for a murderer.
Amnesia: TDD - The moment you scream at pixels on a screen.
The Darkness - It's in the middle of the game, and it is completely brutal.
The Beatles: Rock Band - Entering Abbey Road
