I haven't actually played a lot of the games on the list. Good to see ME2 got in there.

I know it's a bit randomised but losing a squadmate during the suicide mission in my first play through of ME2 was pretty memorable for me. Sure Miranda, any biotic can handle that.

The ending of Assassins Creed Brotherhood. I actually screamed out loud at that.

The start of the last straw quest in DA2. Even though I remember waking up the night before i got to it and thinking 'sela petrae, salt peter. Anders what have you done?' I still didn't see it coming and that first playthrough it was f*cking epic. Still hits me every time.

Miranda is always running her mouth and questioning you. She got on my nerves with that crap!

To the FF7 haters, I LOL at the lack of PC titles on the list.

I agree with the top 10 fully. I'll read the rest of the list however.

The Hold the line speech, or the Wrex moment on Virmire are some of my favorite ME moments.  Some people here are mentioning full missions.  Are we talking moments or entire parts of games?

As far as Aerith being #1.  I don't know about #1, but I have no problem with it being very high.  I can still remember the moment I saw that.  I was playing FF VII, and a friend of mine was watching.  When that happened, there was dead silence in the room, and we were just sitting there dropped jawed, shocked.  I'm kind of sad because Aerith was a member of the team, and I thought I'd have her as healer for the game.  Then my friend screams out of nowhere, Sephiroth is bad ###.
Was priceless

Where is your "conversation" with Master Li after you rescue him, from Jade Empire? I really disliked that game, but it remains a great moment.

"Something-something....IS YOUR GREATEST FLAW!" dun dun duuuun.

Since we're discussing top moments in gaming, I'll throw in my own(in no particular order)

God of War 3 - The Climb to Mount Olympus, and all the set pieces that went into it.
Mother 3 - Sunflowers, or the Mushroom Sequence.
Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne - Ascension.
Bioshock - The Introduction
Mass Effect 2 - Suicide Mission
Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem - Losing your Sanity
Final Fantasy VII - One Winged Angel.
Majora's Mask - The end of the Anju/Kafei quest.
Super Metroid - The Final Boss.
Legend of Zelda: OoT - The Final Boss.
Link to the Past - Entering Dark World.
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - My, you sleep rather soundly for a murderer.
Amnesia: TDD - The moment you scream at pixels on a screen.
The Darkness - It's in the middle of the game, and it is completely brutal.
The Beatles: Rock Band - Entering Abbey Road

Wow, I didn't even realize that they completely left out Warcraft III. That's sad to see. And absolutely agreed on that scene from The Darkness. It gets me every time.

The real point of disagreement I have with that list is that many of those moments aren't really "unique" gaming moments, so it's hard for me to place them anywhere on a top gaming list. Mario's Goose Chase and Mortal Kombat's "Finish Him" may be iconic, but they are representativeof gaming in its infancy and for myself rarely trigger any kind of reaction.

It can depend on when you first played/played through it. I'm a FF fan and VII is one of my faves in the series, played back in 1997 when I was only about 7 but even I can tell you it's aged horribly compared to others on the same platform like VIII and IX(Unless on PC, then just VIII). As for the Aerith thing, many who played IX for the first time were about 7 years old or younger, so seeing something like that happen to a character you grow attached to/know would leave a lasting impression. Maybe not so much for older gamers who first played FFVII around that time now. Plus, loads of people like Aerith, she has a huge fanbase.

Of course, I'm assuming a lot here, sorry.

It'd be on the list at any rate, you wouldn't forget something like that. (You certainly don't seem to have forgotten regardless of your opinion)Though I'm not sure about being number 1.

I really liked VIII's opening too.

I think walking into Phendrana Drifts for the first time on Metroid Prime is deserving of a spot.

I don't think it matters when you played it. Final Fantasy VII is very run-of-the-mill and has very little to offer as a game. The game just lacked compared to 90% of all RPGs of the time, honestly. VIII is a better entry, even with its broken combat, and IX is infinitely better. I can't even be bothered to compare Final Fantasy VII with something like Panzer Dragoon Saga because it's just downright offensive to put FF VII and Saga in the same category. The fact that VII "has aged horribly" is a testament to its bad gameplay mechanics: only the absolute best games survive the test of time. Saga and IX survived. FF VII didn't. For a very a good reason.

I feel like at this point the death of Aerith is like the Kim Kardashian of gaming moments: it's only there by default, not because it deserves it. People talk about and it creates a cycle where it just used over and over again as a cool moment. This was clearly a safe and boring choice by IGN.

I mean, I can think of cooler moments in games I'm not even a fan of!

I'm primarily a console gamer. FF VII is still garbage.

Another awesome moment...

- Mordin singing Scientist Salarian.

Good list for the most part. You always have people's personal opinons on this kind of stuff though, so obviously nothing's concrete for each individual person.

Using FFIX is not a good example. FFIX is the most vanilla of the PSX FFs...and its EXTREMELY vanilla cast of characters and plot has aged the worst, let's not even discuss the ost, which has probably the worst in FF's legendary music discography. The cast of FFVI, Xenogears, Chrono Trigger s**Ts all over FFIX. I'm not even much of a fan of FFVII, though I do acknowledge that even 14 years after its release it still has the industry (and even other developers) under its spell. In terms of Square's releases in the 90s (jp/na) Chrono Trigger > Xenogears > FFVI, Vagrant Story >  Seiken Densetsu 3 > FF IV > Final Fantasy Tactics > FFV> Super Mario RPG > FF VII > FF VIII > Secret of Mana > Einhander > Parasite Eve > bunch of other Square titles > FFIX > Saga Frontier

Death of Aerith belongs in the top 20, though I wouldn't place it above a lot of memorable moments from FF IV or Chrono Trigger. The company that made Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Xenogears biggest release this upcoming year is.....FF XIII-2....SMH...

I will say this about FF VII: I have never seen any rpg that has such a dedicated and rabid fanbase....even well over a decade after its release. No rpg this generation has even come close to the 10 million copies FFVII has sold. And that was only on one system. Imagine if Square had released it for the N64 also.  Even with the lesser characters, you see TONS and  all types of people dressing up as, , drawing fanart of, and writing fanfiction about, and covering every tune from the game in every type of musical instrument known to man. Even its antagonist, Sephiroth, is the de facto posterboy for villains for the entire rpg industry. Even though Kefka (FFVI) is far superior..

10. Entering Rapture (Bioshock) - Why isn't this near #1?

IMO Bioshock doesnt even belong on the list... I mentioned that the Revan reveal belonged here because it was a moment that floored people. Hell even the very first web of intrigue character absorbed by Alex Mercer was a "Holy ****" moment

This list is just as political as the Academy Awards

Meeting Andrew Ryan trumps entering Rapture for me.

Yeah, though I thought they were both great moments. Oh, and the Atlas reveal was fantastic too. BioShock's writing is easily some of the best I've seen in a game, on par with Planescape: Torment. It's too bad there are many other parts of the game that weren't so awe worthy. Damnable mini-games. And the ending was a joke.

/wants a genius to go back and remake BioShock perfect.

This is where the arguement reaches boiling point. Hope you don't mind if I sit the rest of ths out, I have no desire to initiate a flame war over FF. It'll get nobody anywhere but make us all look like idiots.
