I liked the distinctive noses on the DA2 elves but they went too far, especially with the female body models where the necks are far too long and thin to look like they could physically support their heads and they have almost nonexistant shoulders
Fenris apparently had a unique body model which is why he doesn't look as odd as some of the other Models and Merrill's scarf and shoulder fur hides the odd look of the female elf body, too bad that's moot when she's in underwear or that silver armor.

I'd like to see the bodies and eye size scaled back a bit. I thought the Elf Update Mod by tmp7704 for DA:O actually hit the perfect balance:

The blue is DA:O's elves, the grey is DA2 and the white is the mod
Now if only I could mod DA2 with this...

How the hell are those not "humans with pointy ears" as well?

It may be not be too visible on the screenshot, but the modified character base has the straight nose bridge and enlarged eyes/irides as well as the ears going outwards. I.e. the exact set of features that makes people go all "yay, they no longer look like humans with pointy ears!" about the 'new' elves.

The difference in comparison to DA2 is different rendering engine of the game, which gives the faces more details in the textures and such.

edit: for comparison, here's "DA2" Merrill rendered in the older engine. The profile shot shows facial features change better.

(and a bonus Leliana, just because)

Wow, that is the best rendering of Merril I've seen yet. Makes her not look like an anime charicature.

Also... the unneccessary, shameless ploy to persuade me with pictures of hot lesbian lovin... might totally be working.

I do admit, that Merrill does look good. But.... I think I prefer DAII Merrill. Maybe if I saw DAII style Merrill in DAO and heard Merrill's voice I'd have a different opinion, but as it stands DAII Merrill wins.

tmp, did you put in just the basic Elven facial features of Merrill -- nasal bridge, eyes, and ears -- or the actual facial design along with the Elven features (jawline, cheekbones, etc)?

Like is that Merrill's facial structure from DAII put into DAO or just -- as I said -- the basic Elven features. Just curious, is all.

Color change is the worst type of "destinct" one can make...

Really, do elves HAVE to be visually different than other fantasy elves?

Of course they do! Otherwise, how will people at Bioware events be able to cosplay and tell themselves apart from other cosplaying elves?

CLEARLY you don't understand anything about defeating trolls.

Make the bridge they live under collapse on them and bury them underneath rubble.

Simple enough.

I got a nasty shock when I saw Da 2 Zevran, but he is supposed to be 7 years older. (hate the warden romance glitch)
Anyhow: keep Da2 heads, shorten the necks, other eyecolor than green (seriusly!!!)Would like to see my surana with that nose.....

I love Community.

And in regards to elves changing colors, I don't think another retconning of the races is the best idea. I just think the engine system needs a lot more polish. Hopefully they will be keeping most of the same software components for DA3 and have now had time to work out a lot of the kinks. If they move to Frostbite 2 before DA3 and have to reinvent the process all over again, I don't know what the outcome will be.

LOL that was awesome. So that line was just a reference to something.

Indeed. But its a gem to use on Forums, to be sure.

But to be back on topic, I really was hoping tmp would respond. I'd lioek to know if he was able to create that Merril with DA2's engine or if that was a DAO mod. I think a lot of the complaints that people look freakish may be tied back to DA2's new facial engine. Which would be a shame unless it could be cleaned up a lot by the time DA3 comes around.

She was sort of a special case, since after i did the modified head base i got curious how close i could make her features match the DA2 version, using that and the DA sliders. So in short, the starting point was DAO Merrill morph using the new base, but she's then tweaked to be as close to the DA2 face design as i could reasonably get it.

In fact, those tweaks then served as guidelines for adjusting the other DAO elf morphs to DA2 "standards", in the elf update mod.
